Root [Guide] How to setup Gparted/Alpharev (or any .ISO) with VMware Player (updated Jan 2012)

I need some help too please, well I think so ;)

I have successfuly set up Gparted live using the step by step for Vmplayer, all working after many trials.

After connecting my Desire, Gparted detects it and shows a partition of 7.40GB (Its a new 8GB bought a week ago). Under the heading 'file system' is shows a green square and next to that is a yellow warning triangle. When looking at the info option for this is states;

Cant open /dev/sdb1 : No such file or directory
Cannot initalize 'H':
mlabel: Cannot initialize drive

There are some other descriptions too but figured that would be enough for some help.

To recap, I bought the 8GB card last week and copied the contents of the standard 4GB card and pasted that onto the new 8GB card. Phone worked well afterwards and all my files etc showing up. So i figure that the new card is good along with the file system.....unless you tell me otherwise.

Reason for going through all this is to have a 1GB partition for moving apps etc and also so that I can try other ROM's that require it. Yes I am rooted and S off too.

To clear this up too. If I create the new partition on the 8GB card, will that wipe the entire card?

Thanks in advance, you guys rock......:)
in some cases it will. its worth backing up the card
try using a card reader if you are getting that error or use a socket at the back of pc rather than the fronts

OK, so took your advice and ran Gparted with the SD card in a card reader. Eventually managed to create a new 1GB partition Ext 3.

When in the phone it shows A2SD storage of total 0.98GB, free 0.90GB, so I assume its worked?

How do I get all the apps from the internal phone storage to the Ext 3 partition? The internal phone storage is still showing low with all the apps in there.

Im confused

Hi,

I tried 3 times to get partition working using VM method but every time the quick info shows "Information Not available" And I do not understand what is going wrong.

Could someone clarify pls
- In step 15, "Plug your phone in" should this plugging be done in phone ON status? or in Recovery mode, USB mount?
- While doing the partition EXT, should we select the Primary Partition or Extended Partition? Video shows as Primary... so wanted check if that is wrong.

Pls help... :(

Regards,

Well....looks like I have to make that decision to choose a Rom now. Huh... did not understand much from that post. Probably I am a bit sleepy...

Thanks, I think you're right about the iso being corrupt, I burnt it to CD and it wouldn't boot. I've downloaded an older version which got started booting and then got locked in an error screen. Now trying 0.10.0-3 again fresh. What would be an alternative method if I can't get this to work?

i dont use alternatives as they are not as reliable

you will most likely need to flash the rom over the top

I have spent hours trying to find the answer to the below, but have not seen it in a form I can totally rely on BEFORE I partition. I've seen too many who have dived in and stuffed up.

After partitioning:
1. I assume restore from Nandroid backup is not an option because the nandroid backup is a total image with the previous sd card setup?
2. I also assume the nandroid backup saves to the sd card which gets wiped while partitioning so therefore to be of any emergency use it needs to be saved back to the pc.

and so, after partitioning, the sd card is clean so:
1. I need to reflash the phone with CM7 again?
2. Restore apps etc from Titanium backup from my PC.
3. If the above is correct where should the Titanium backup be moved to on the SD card from the PC? (root I guess)

Thanks again.
