What will be your next phone after the DHD?

If it was now, looking at the rumoured specs of the Nexus/Droid Prime, it would probably be that. However, I'm not due an upgrade till April (I think) so I'll have to see what's available to me at the time. Whatever happens, as long as it's pretty high spec and Cyanogen are making ROMs for it, I'll be happy.

The DHD was my first Android handset and it took me about 6 months to root and go the custom route, it certainly won't take me that long this time around ;).

Edit - Just saw your response. Why don't you root, I firmly believe the majority of your problems stem from the fact your handset is branded.

Snap!

Although I had the HTC Desire before the Desire HD, which, in my opinion, was a much better phone. The build quality of my DHD is terrible! The speaker is blown, the volume rocker broken, and the GPS only works if i push my finger against the back of the phone otherwise it will not connect.

I used to be all about HTC handsets (I've had several since the good old days of the T-Mobile MDA Compact, Compact II, Compact III, etc).

I think I will give Samsung a try next, as I almost bought a Nexus S, but chose the DHD because I wasn't a fan of Samsung (which I now regret). The specs sheet on the "Galaxy Nexus" or whatever they will call it sounds amazing! But even if that doesn't come to fruition I would probably buy the Samsung Galaxy S II by the end of the year as this DHD is ready for the scrapheap.

The one saving grace for the DHD was when I rooted it a few weeks back. I now love it, but the hardware issues are still there, so I'm thinking if Samsung can get the hardware right, and an XDA developer can get the software right, I will be in a happy place for a very long time! :D

Oh and 3 hours 35 mins after unplugging it from the Mains and it being 100% charged i'm now on 19% battery! Brilliant phone just keeps getting better and better...not!

If that's the sort of thing you are experiencing, then I guess I can understand your anger. But it's not typical, and it seems obvious that something's wrong. There's been loads of advice on here about problems relating to excessive power drain, have you gone through those and tried all the relevant suggestions?

I am Happy with my HTC Desire HD, and use the following HTC widgets: Time/Weather, Next Appointment, Agenda, Calendar, Friend Stream. I would like to stick with Sense. Not much for games. I have purchased all of three games, and I regret one of the purchases since I don't use it enough, Basically, I am open to a another single core phone.

What I do want a 4.5 to 4.7 inch screen on a phone not more than 10mms thick. The Sensation XL looks interesting (but the I don't care about the Beats audio and that will probably push up the price) and it would have been nice if it were at least qHD.

If I have to choose one right now, I would go with the Galaxy S II. What beats that? But I will hold and wait.

Wow, I would be annoyed over that as well but that is not a typical experience with the DHD.

My battery wasn't terrible before rooting but it got even better after. Just flashed a new rom a couple of days ago to try out sense 3.5. As the phone sits now it has been 1 day, 1 hour and 4 mins since coming of the charger and my battery is showing 35% left. Today hasn't been a heavy day but I have used it.(some, leave it on and never touch it, then claim it gets 3-4 days on a charge) It shows that the display has been on for 57m 3 s. Some texting (12-15), checking email, checking friend stream, listened to 20 mins of music, everything set to sync every hour and wifi enabled the entire time.

I would try rooting it. You may just find that it's like getting a new phone. But beware once you start flashing roms, it becomes very addictive.

I probably won't bother with a smartphone again. Well; not for a while. Once my current contract runs out, I'll keep the DHD on a prepay plan until it dies. It's fun to have but if I can find a normal phone (dumbphone?) with a decent size screen for text I'll go for that rather than another smartphone.

Mainly because I don't want to get stuck on a plan, which I'd have to do if I wanted to update.

I purchased a sim free DHD here in the UK and I have to say I cant fault it apart from the terrible speaker. I use it at home / for work almost like a tablet. Get an average 14 hours from the battery and average GPS lock time is 6 seconds. So DCTEN I think you have a faulty phone. I don't believe in just buying things because a new model comes out so I will make it last me a few years (hopefully it will get Ice cream sandwich and upgraded Sense). The only small software glitch I had was dealt with very well by HTC including a follow up phone call to see if I was happy. So given that as things stand nothing would encourage me to move way from HTC and I am one of those people who like Sense.

Thanks mate you're earning your crust today aint ya? :D really thanks a lot for your help. Another daft question, what happens to all my stored address book contacts, will flashing mean i have to type them all in again? tel numbers, emails, addresses etc!

Cheers!

They should be backed up with your Gmail account - you can sync it... worth doing - if you loose your phone/change phones, when you link another phone to the Gmail account, then your contacts would still be there. :)

If your not using a google account for your contacts may I suggest that you do. It is the simplest thing going. If you get a call from someone not in your contact list, you have the option to simply add them and they will automatically be synced with your Google account immediately.

If you change your phone, as long as you can have an Google account, your contacts will all sync again once your Google account is added to the new phone.

Anyone who flashes alot of roms, this is a no brainer. Flash new rom, add google account and all your contacts, calendar and anything else are back on your phone.

Hey mate thanks, i've got a google account i just didn't know it stored the contacts in there also. I've had a look and they're all in there. The calendar sync doesn't seem to work though as it doesn't match with my phone calendar??

IF i could? I'd prob swap it for a Nexus Prime when it comes out, but contract doesnt end till like middle of next year, but hopefully then there will be another more awesome phone with like...

...at least 1gb ram, quad core, 720p res screen, re-jig wifi and mobile radio so it drains less battery, built in fm transmitter to we can play tunes wirelessly on ANY car, any DECENT camera i.e. not the ones HTC use, solid unibody metal (cos i like the weighty feel) and at least 4.3" screen, a decent speaker, decent volume on the ear piece, maybe built in wireless charging :)

but maybe there's me dreaming lol

I won't be upgrading until there's a significant enough improvement, the DHD should easily see me through to the end of 2 years, when usually I buy a new phone each year. The amount of support from ROM developers means that we should never be left with an outdated device. The DHD does everything I need it to, and especially now I have my HP Touchpad, (hopefully running CM7 by the end of the month) I can't see any reason to change.

I've also got another year to go on my contract, so no point in trying to name my next phone, but here are my thoughts about what will be central to my decision.
* The DHD is the best phone I've had (last one was a Nokia N95 8GB), and I can't see myself moving away from Android.
* I like the size of the screen, so wouldn't want anything smaller.
* So far, at least, there aren't any new features that, for me, are 'must-haves' but 4G might well be on that list in the future.
* I really would like a phone that could last several days between charges - the DHD is ok, but I have to charge it every night and heavy use of the GPS leaves me glad that I carry a couple of spare batteries in my back-pack.
* I'd like an LCD screen that was more readable in sunlight and didn't drain the battery so much - if I could use the phone as an ereader, that would be good.
* I'd like a louder, better quality speaker.
* A proper camera shutter button would be useful.
* What's this crazy obsession with being the thinnest phone on the market? I like the size and weight of the DHD and probably wouldn't notice if it were a few millimetres thicker to accommodate a larger battery.

Other things are more down to the networks, such as limited monthly data packages and download speeds that are sometimes fine, sometimes unusable.

I'm left feeling that, in a year's time, I might well find that my perfect phone is still some way off, so I'll probably keep the DHD and negotiate a lower monthly bill.
