Root New User, first smartphone, first root

Hi guys,

New user here, new to smartphones, new to android. Sorry, I know this has probably been beaten to death, I've been trying to search, but their are so many files/guides from such a massive spread of dates, I just want to confirm accurate information.

In Canada, using an HTC Magic 32A from Rogers, unlocked on another 3G carrier. Thinking to root for 3 reasons:

1) Freedom, this is why I don't own anything Apple.
2) Want Wi-Fi tethering.
3) Using unlocked phone on alternate network, no OS updates, want newer versions.
4) Hoping to get rid of annoying carrier applications, haven't found anything on that yet.

Moderate windows power user. Done registry edits, streamlined XP installs, etc. Just learning linux on Ubuntu Lucid, and just starting to learn programming in C++.

I figured for CyanogenMod for stability and community, want to confirm that this information is still current and accurate:

Anything further I should be doing? Tips/tricks? Nothing on my phone I'd be worried about losing save what it needs to run.

You are much more tech capable than me. I am in Vancouver and also have an unlocked Rogers Magic. I found an ad in Craigslist. A shop in Vancouver does rooting etc for $50. I plan on just taking my phone there. I do not have the guts to try doing it myself. Maybe I am too old.....

Well what I believed to be a Magic turns out to be a Magic+, at least as far as Rom/SPL is concerned.

Going to have a go at this I guess:

Other people seem to have found success.

Can you post a link of the CL ad? I'd probably do that just to save all the trouble and fear of paperweight.

That's an excellent guide. I used it myself, and as long as you're careful and take your time with it, it works flawlessly. By the way, when making your gold card, the microSD that came with the phone should work, but be prepared to buy another one on the chance it doesn't.

Thanks, gold card worked fine, hit another wall.

32. Flash Zip from SD card
a) update-cm-5.0.7-DS-test1-signed.zip
b) bc-5.0.7-t1-ebi1_R2-signed.zip
c) gapps-ds-ERE36B-signed.zip

33. Power the phone off and then back on

Persistent, error : 'Run nandroid-mobile.sh' via adb

Googling has yielded:

Insufficient batter charge - (My battery is 100%, tried plugged into wall and USB)
Insufficient free space - (2 Gb micro SD, 1% occupied, only contains files relevant to goldcard creation via instructions)

I don't know where to go, google usually solves these problems for me, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could be that your SD card is too full to be able to perform the backup, try deleting some non essential items off of the SD, then try again.

Awesome guy. My phone was far to screwed up when I gave it to him, he wasn't able to root it, so he didn't charge a cent. I'd recommend in a second.

I managed to solve my problems, and running CM 5.07. Good luck.

HTC Phones have a NAND lock. The best one I've found to break these is Revolutionary in the US. I don't know if it will work with that particular model. After that you can root from the recovery console.

Unrevoked or Super One click may work also as this is a very old phone.
