Galaxy S II (Hercules) Coming Oct 12, 2011

Right now I am in grand central terminal. I tried the wifi and it worked for me. I will get to do it at home and see. I will let you on it tonight or tomorrow.
Update: it works! I jus made a wifi call and surfed the Web. I was gold that there will be an expanded wifi service update, Maybe this is what everyone is talking about. It's supposed to extend wifi service

Can you explain a little bit how you made WIFI calls. Do you have a blue icon in the Notification bar saying you are on WIFI calling? Also, the cell signal bar will be all zero during WIFI calling mode.

I suspect you are making regular cellular call while you are also having a WIFI signal.

WIFI calling is great, say like, you have bad cell reception at home. In that case, calls are routed through the home internet router instead of cell signal.

The new found great use of WIFI calling is, to avoid International roaming charge. While overseas, whenever you have WIFI calling on and WIFI presense, all of a sudden, you can make and receive phone calls from the US just like in the US, without any roaming charge.

Ok, I do not have any Blue icon in the Notification bar, as a matter of fact, I went from a little "e" since I don't have 3G or 4G where I live, to now an Umbrella type of icon something that looks like (((. but going from top to bottom with the "." (dot) being on the bottom, Ohh, and my signal bars went from 1 to 3. When I shut it off, it went back to the little "e" and 1 bar of service. Maybe I am misunderstanding the Terminology of "Wireless Calling", but to me, it seems to boost my signal, which is exactly what I need it to do....Please correct me if I am wrong.

Allow me.. hope you don't mind...

low__signal-icon.gif

Those vertical bar icons is the cell signal for VOICE. The more bars you have, the better the voice signal is. That's what you pay each month for the minutes.

The icon next to it is for the cell DATA. If showing G that's GPRS which is the 1st generation data. E is EDGE which is 2G data. Then 3G and 4G. I don't think the phone would show the 3G icon. Anything above 3G it would be showing the 4G icon. This is the data plan you have to pay.

wifi_icon.png

The Umbrella ((( icon is your WIFI signal. WIFI could be provided by coffee shop, hotel, train station, or your home. Most likely free (just like in your house.. not really free because you pay your ISP at home). The phone will use WIFI for data even if you are in 4G coverage since WIFI is faster and free.

We are talking about WIFI calling (not "Wireless Calling"). It uses your WIFI signal for voice.. just like Vontage or Time Warner digital phone. However, if your phone doesn't have "WIFI Calling" feature, you won't be able to use it.

The presence of the WIFI icon is only get you faster data connection (say like browsing or download photos). It has nothing to do with your voice quality. It will not boost the voice signal.

So if you are in a poor cell signal area and you have free WIFI (at office, or at home), then a phone with WIFI calling will get you very clear voice talk. However, we already determined this Samsung Galaxy S2 doesn't have WIFI calling feature now.

Ok, I'm sorry, but I'm still confused. I thought that wifi calling, allows me to get a better signal in my house so I can make and receive calls. I know about the UMA,uma,e,E, 3g and 4g ect.. basically, in my house,I have little to no signal. When I searched for wifi networks, it finds my wireless router/modem. I enter the information/password and my phone connects to my wireless netowrk in my home. Thus enabling my phone to get better reception. (unless, I unknowingly just answered my own question now, by stating Wireless router?)

WIFI Calling will allow you get a better voice talk when in poor cell signal or even no signal area. You can make and receive calls in such situation. But it is a phone feature. Not all phone has such feature.

That only gives you better DATA signal, not VOICE signal.

Again, if you have WIFI connected, that doesn't mean you have WIFI calling, or better talk quality.

Might wanna double check that (for this phone at least). From what I have read in several places, this phone automatically uses wifi calling when wifi is enabled. I cannot confirm anything as I dont have this phone, but on Tmonews several people have stated this to be the case.

I have this phone and I can confirm WIFI calling is not presence nor it will be enabled automatically.

Well, there are a bunch of people here that claim they have it and it does have it.
Samsung Galaxy S II, HTC Amaze 4G Arrive On Store Shelves Today

Again, I dont have it, nor would I use wifi calling if i did. Just passing along info. This certainly seems to be the most confusing thing about this phone.

How does your GPS work? Good? As a former Vibrant user, Im scared to ever buy Samsung again.

Thats why I posted here. According to some other people, you did it right and the phone DOES have it. If you read those posts there, youll see some people think Samsungs claim to add it later via update just means that it might be more of an app as an auto feature. I dunno... I got nothin. :)

I'm really skeptical about this. Unless it is really an automatic feature that when cell signal is low and WIFI is on, it will switch to WIFI calling automatically. If that's the case, I don't know how sales rep in Tmo store can demostrate that.

The fact is, I have the phone with me. I have WIFI on.. That doesn't mean I have WIFI calling on. I still call through voice signal.

The app that it uses to be have preference allow user to select Cell Preference, WIFI Preference, or WIFI calling only. I can't see how that can be an automatic feature.

If you have wifi on, that doesnt do anything. But if you are connected to a wifi network (which a tmobile rep could easily do), I guess that must be what triggers it to use wifi to call.

I'm not sure here, but I do know, when I am not connected to my wifi, I don't get any calls, once in a while I will get a message saying that I have a new VM..but when it is on, I get my calls...I guess only Samsung can answer this..I will post in their forums and come back here with a response.

Ok, so I chated with a Samsung Person. This phone DOES NOT HAVE WIFI CALLING. Here is the transcript:

unplugged from the charger at 3:37 pm...and it was like 3% at 5:57am... i think that's awesome...
So your saying you ONLY got 14hrs use before the battery died from a full charge? Depending on how you use your device that is either lousy or horrible. My Samsung Infuse easily goes 24+ hrs (with "normal" daily use) before battery is that low. Of course it depends greatly on what you do with it but that doesn't sound so "awesome." I guess if you made 100 calls and spent 8hrs on the net in that 14hr period it might be good.
