I realize this may be a repost but after searching through the forums I realize I don't understand the "tech jargon" most of the threads are talking about.

I recently downloaded Tasker because I have heard nothing but good things about it. One issue I am running into is GPS and Android 2.3+. I have an ATT Samsung Galaxy S II and want to enable GPS when I open "Maps".

I have tried Widgetsoid but it didn't solve my problem of not being able to automatically enable/disable GPS. So if someone could help me out in layman's terms how I can go about having Tasker work with my GPS it would be greatly appreciated.

*DISCLAIMER: I am not going to root my phone because (as stated earlier) I am a n00b and will mess it up.

This doesn't actually answer your question re Tasker but I read that GPS can be left switched on but will only start up (and use battery) when a program which uses it, such as Maps, is started. I wasn't sure about this but I have kept it switched on and it only shows on the notification bar when a program which needs it starts up. It switches off when the program is stopped. I haven't noticed any effect on the battery at all.

Are you saying that Tasker won't enable/disable/toggle your GPS using Misc => GPS? If it won't, then you may be out of luck.

If Tasker can change your GPS state, take a look at the Tasker profiles here:

http://tasker.wikidot.com/profile-index

You might be able to find what you're looking for there.

I've accomplished this before by creating a new task that enables GPS, then launches Maps. Then add a Task widget to one of your screens, and select the task you created. You should also be able to change the icon to the Maps icon.

This is correct. If it isn't in the notification bar it isn't using any battery power.

If you still want to know, as an exercise to help you create other profiles in the future, this is how you do it:

In Tasker, select the first Tab (the rocket icon), click the + button to add a new profile, name your profile if you wish to do so. A list of apps will now pop up, find and select 'Maps' and click the tick. At the next pop-up, select 'New Task' and name this, if you wish to do so. Now click the + button to add a new task, then select 'Misc' then GPS, and set 'On' under the first option and click the tick, then click the next tick. That's it, you're done. The profile will recognise when the app starts and will turn on GPS and it will also recognise when you close the app and will switch off GPS automatically.
