Root Have to bring the Evo4G to Sprint for...

...a broken front glass. I've had my Evo since launch, naked, and finally dropped it on something hard enough to break it - the parking lot. Needless to say, the glass is cracked, so I'll need to bring it to Sprint (I have TEP), but first, a few questions:

1) I need to unroot (the phone is still very usable), but if I get an exchange, is the newest version of Android rootable for the Evo4G?

2) If it's NOT rootable, I know a guy who replaces glass on iPods, iPhones, and other smartphones, (including the 4G) and he'll charge me for the glass and that's it (<$50). Problem is, now it has a few nicks in the side, and that will bug the shit out of me.

Any ideas/tips from anyone that's gone through this with Sprint?

what is your hboot? if it is hboot 2.10 or less then use this http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html to get you unrooted.

Thanks ocnbrze! Yikes...my hboot is .97?! Thanks for the info I'll start searching for a stock Rom and get this thing unrooted before heading to Sprint.

You could replace the glass yourself if you can follow a youtube video and do it lol. I dropped mine a few weeks ago and ordered a screen off amazon for $13 and replaced it myself following the video. It was pretty simple.

Yeah, man, I just saw that. Doesn't look difficult at all, but since I'm paying for TEP, I'm going to try the Sprint store first. If I get some runaround I'll just order from Amazon and with Prime, have the stuff here by Saturday.

Yea I would have liked to go to Sprint with mine, but I don't feel like going through the whole unrooting process and then getting a refurbished phone which I would have to root. Plus i've heard some bad things about refurbs being worse than the old phone lol. I pay for the TEP too. Maybe I should go to them lol.

Also, isn't it $50 to get the new phone for the deductive?

So I just talked to Sprint though the chat on the website and they told me with the TEP it is a $100 deductible for the new phone. I rather just spend the $13 on the new screen and replace it myself than have the hassle of rooting process and $100.

I replaced a few screens on some blackberries a while back. Granted they weren't touchscreens, but screen replacement is something that can be done if you have enough patience and try to get as much info as possible before starting it.

I did my first one on my iphone 3g about a year or 2 ago, and I just did my first one on the Evo about a month ago. Unfortunately I cracked it again, so I have another opportunity to change another screen. It was pretty simple the first time and only took about 20 minutes.

you do not need a stock rom to get unrooted per se. just follow the guide i linked you to. basically all you need to do is flash the s-on tool then install the stock rom and stock recovery via PC36IMG found in the guide. if the one in the guide does not work for you, try this one PC36IMG_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.70.651.1_Radi..zip.

do you really even need to unroot?

were talking about insurance not warranty right?

I used best buy insurance once (before I canceled it) and left it rooted. the invoice actually said warranty claim on it, it was for white spots on the screen.

my friend had his screen replaced at sprint while being rooted. he actually went into a repair center and asked if the screen could be replaced instead of a new phone. he said the guy understood that he didn't want to loose root (this was when there was no root for gingerbread at the time). I think he just paid the repair cost of 35$

But then again it could be who you talk to.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I'm going to try to fix it myself first (all I needed to order was the digitizer lens. We'll see how it goes on Saturday!

regarding the nicks, aren't there some sort of cases for evo too? maybe get one of them and, instead of protecting phone from nicks, you can just hide them.

Just make sure when you do change the screen. After you take the original screen off, try not to touch the actual digitizer below it or get any fingerprints on it. You want it clean as possible, other wise you will see it through the lens.

I have the rubberized official HTC one I bought from Sprint. That covers it up perfectly.

I thought the digitizer was what I was replacing. The screen under it is the LCD, but yeah, not touching that!
