USB needed to root?

Is rooting possible, without using the USB port? My phone is able to charge, but none of my computers are able to recognize the connection anymore (even trying different cables). VzW claims that it is hardware failure... and I now agree. Other than this issue, my phone is in mint condition and works flawlessly, so I'm not interested in a refurb. I am interested in rooting however.

Thanks.

Can you explain this further? I do carry insurance on the phone, but was told that still only gets me a refurb.

That is correct. You pay the deductible and the insurance gives you a used phone in working condition, if there is an issue with that phone you send it back until they give you one that is in proper condition. Because the micro USB port is "physical damage" and not due to OEM defect you are not able to get a refirb for free via your warranty.
