z4Root is a great little app if you don't want to go through the learning curve of rooting on a computer. From what I've read you should be 2.2 or lower and it also depends on your phone but it did seem to work with a good number of phones. I have been trying to root my phone for some time now but have been without success. Mainly because 1) I don't want to get into the computer side of rooting since I only have access to Mac's and not PC's, and 2) I haven't found another solution similar to z4Root that actually works. Seems like Samsung devices are not consistent in their hardware so methods will work on some phones and not on others.

I've been watching forums like this and even those using the PC method's run into all kinds of problems which is why I'm hoping someone will one day pick up where z4Root left off. I'm not sure what phone you have but do a search on z4Root and give it a shot. I've even tried it and although it didn't work it also didn't cause any damage to my phone. Its definitely worth a try if you want an easy way to root. I really wish I would have learned programming back in the day when I was first interested in programming this way I could have tried to work on a non computer version of rooting. I'm not sure why most developers are not interested in making a non computer rooting system but maybe because you have less control. That's the only thing I can come up with but who knows.

I did try Gingerbreak, another one that is supposed to work without a computer but again, no luck on my side but you may want to give that one a shot also. It is a little more complicated than the z4Root method but supposedly it works on some phones but from the posts I've read it seems to be geared more towards using it in conjunction with a computer for better results.

Check out qbking77. He's made a lot of helpful video's if you want to learn about rooting your phone and you're willing to use your computer to achieve root. Hopefully you'll have better luck than I have. Until then I wait in the corner for someone to build a working non computer rooting system.

It depends on your device and its software. Check in the root section for your specific device. There's usually guides to help so read them and if you have questions just ask :)

That^^

mob.sh, each devices differs, with some it's a case of using a simple one click tool. However when I rooted my handset, it took about an hour and all sorts of ADB/Command line stuff. It's now a 1-click thing

What handset do you own, we can try and point you in the right direction.

According to the videos here, it looks like you need a computer unfortunately. If your work PC is monitored, I wouldn't really encourage using that to do it.

Without access to a computer (PC) you, (we) are pretty much out of luck unless you have a phone that is supported by z4Root. That was one of the last reliable rooting without a computer. There is very little if any support for those not wanting to learn how to go through all the technical learning curve of successfully rooting your phone. I've gone through a lot of posts/threads about rooting and even if you do learn all the information using a PC to root your phone that won't guarantee anything. I have seen so many posts about people who successfully rooted their phones lets say prior to Froyo and now they are trying to root again and keep running into problems. I've been waiting for someone to build a "root without a computer/one click) app but there doesn't seem to be much interest in creating one. I'm no programmer so I have no idea how technical or difficult is would be to make an updated working version of apps like z4Root so I am not able to say why there doesn't seem to be much of an interest in making one.

Here's the link to the video section: http://androidforums.com/epic-4g-al...ls-themes-cwm-update-48-videos-6-27-11-a.html

Someone added all the videos to the thread and it seems to have made things run really slow. You can go directly to Youtube and type in "rooting your phone without a computer" and look for qbking77's videos and find what you're looking for.

I too don't have access to a PC, only Mac's and there is little to no support for Mac so I just have to wait and hope that someone will eventually make one. This makes me want to learn programming but the reality of it is that it would probably take years to get as good as some of the developers who are building "root" apps so I just leave it up to those who have the talent and experience to build successful apps.

I didn't have any good luck with Gingerbreak without a computer but some have. qbking77 made some video's on the steps to take if you want to give that a shot. Just do a search on "rooting your phone without a computer" and you should find the videos. I know its posted here and Phandroid and also the XDA developers forums.
