I tested HDMI on Evo

That's great news.

As expected, it sounds like the HDMI functionality on the EVO is just fine, minus a few software enhancements we'd all like to see.

When I get my EVO, I want to do some research into what types of formats it can play through HDMI with whatever software is available. Also of interest: audio output. Given a 5.1 audio source, will the EVO output all channels through the HDMI? My guess is "yes," but who knows.

As far as viewing everything on the screen in HDMI, I'm guessing our XDA friends will set something up for us soon enough.

This is great functionality out of the box, though!

Probably not. You'll probably have to reencode to MP4. I want to see reviews on one of these outputted from the Evo.

This is what I am wondering about.

I plan on having some videos that I will watch on the EVO itself, and those will be encoded at 800x? with 2 channel audio.

That being said, I want to have one or two movies at HD quality I can show via HDMI. I assume the files have to be in mp4 format so they can play via the default video player. What I'm wondering is does the default video player support surround sound (for the HDMI output), or so I need to change the audio to 2 channel.

I figure I have to convert the file anyway (most of what I have is mkv), and since I will be likely be playing video through the TV rather than a receiver, wont need the 5 channel info, and thus should just convert it to 2 channel.

That was my instant reaction but then I recalled that when I was reading about hooking up a computer to a TV, it depends on your graphics card as to what size it could output too, so I figured that there was a minuscule chance that he could possibly be correct. That's why I wanted to get on here and ask knowledgeable people about the topic before I set him straight....

No. The graphics card determines what RESOLUTION it outputs, not what SIZE. The tv itself is what scales the resolution to it's size, whether that be 13 inches or 80 inches.

It should be able to work......
Over a year ago I had the HTC Omnia win winmobile on it and could plug into tvout cable and everything that was on phone was seen on tv no issues.
If crappy winmobile could do it dont see why they can for this badboy Evo!!!

An analog Tv-out connection is way different than an HDMI connection. It will only output what the phone tells it to.

Not sure if anyone is still looking, but a developer named orrebmas has opened up the HDMI port. You can see updates over in Android Central. Evo HDMI out mirroring? - Android Forums

He chose that forum because it came up in googles natural listings. I have done some other searches and this thread came up as well. I figured I would post an update here in case you missed it. Thanks!
