My screen just shattered after a fall from my pocket, no more than 3 feet! What the hell. Any ideas on how I should proceed?

Note: I do not have insurance.

Option A Go to Verizon right now and complain that it is BS

B buy insurance through verizon right now and claim it later?

C buy insurance through a 3rd party and claim it ?

D Eat $600

E ?????

Normally I wouldnt be doing some sort of scam but I think this is total BS this screen isnt supposed to be so brittle

Go to CEX ... webuy.com

You should find one on there for a relatively fair price.

Buy it, wait a month or so, then sell your new one that you get through insurance on ebay or privately. You should either break even, or at most be out maybe $150 bucks or so...depends on the outlet you choose to sell the replacement through.

Good luck...

I'm sure I'm going to get flamed for say this but here is my $.02. If he is still within his grace period to add insurance then I don't see what the problem with him adding it and filing a claim. He will be paying a $100 deductible and getting a refurbished phone. With what Verizon charges for service I'm pretty sure they can afford it. I wonder how many claiming it's unethical would do the same if they were in his position.

If you want to be mad be mad a Verizon. They offered to switch all our Bionics at work out for RAZRs, when they are released, at no charge because of the 3G drop issue. They just switched out all our Charges for Bionics when the Bionic was released because of call drops on the Charge. The point I'm trying to make is, if he had a large business account he could call in tell them exactly what happened and they would let him add insurance and file a claim. They won't do this for the average consumer.

Just my 2 cents also. Instead of the $600 for a new phone, you can send it to Moto to replace the glass for a hella-of-a-lot less than that. I know you already decided on a method, but I thought I would add this option for others who end up with this problem.

I just called Motorola and they said it is $110 to replace the glass on the droid bionic.

Here's the "old fashioned" way of doing stuff ...

My father owned and ran the best grocery store in a small town.
One of the State Troopers woudl stop in about three mornings a week for coffee and chat about hunting and fishing.
My father was out making deliveries one summer evening and came to a Stop sign in the middle of nowhere.
He could see in all directions ... there was noone in sight ... he rolled through the Stop sign without stoppiong.
The Trooper was there and pulled him over.
When he walked up to the car he saw who it was and he said ... "OK Al ... make sure you stop in the future" and was about to let him go.
My father insisted that his friend give him a ticket.

... like I said ... the "old fashioned" way.

What would I do in the same situation? I would pay the $110 to have moto replace the glass instead of the $100 insurance. As for buying insurance? I'm a very anal finance guy. I have a savings account and pay myself all the insurance policies for everything that I have purchased. When I buy a TV, computer, printer, stereo, washer, dryer, and so on.... I ask what the insurance is. I then decline the insurance and send that same amount to my insurance savings account. I now have enough money to replace ANYTHING that I have purchased with cash and I'm still ahead. Its all about stats.

I never get insurance policies ... I did on the Bionic.

I got the Bionic minutes after it went on sale. They did not have a screen protector. I figured it would get scratched. I bought the policy.

Now that i have the policy my Bionic is still without a screen protector ... the screen is sharper ... I haven't had any problems with the proximity sensor.

Insurance through Verizon has to be added in the first 30 days you own the phone. And even then I think they make you go into a store so they can inspect it and make sure it is in working order specifically to avoid this type of fraud.

On my 30th day.........October 8th.......I purchased a policy through square trade.......I even found a 30% off coupon code.........they do not pay out if it is stolen or lost but if damaged in any way then yes.........for $94 I think it is worth it......

I put $250 a month (extra $500 from the two months a year I get 3 paychecks too) into my savings account, roughly a bit more than 10% of my monthly income. If I had my student loans paid off I could put a lot more into it.

Anyways, once my car loan is paid off I plan on upping that to $300 a month and putting an extra $25 into my entertainment account each month and the rest to my loans.

My savings account is for replacing/repairing my property as well as unexpected things like car issues etc.

I plan on letting this account build indefinitely since the ONLY debt I have comes from my student loans. I figure once it gets to a specific point I will invest it/put a big payment into my student loans and then keep rebuilding it, but I want at least a $3,000 cushion in the savings account at all times.

I figure $3,000 will cover the vast majority of problems with my car as well as if the tv/computer dies and I cannot repair them etc. Also, this covers 6 months of rent and groceries/gas.

Realistically I like to be cautious and frugal and will probably leave it around $5,000.

I would rather have an extra $2,000 sitting in an account/being invested than having my loans down that amount.

Rent is $300 including utilities, got a deal from a friend hahaha.

Anyways, I figure with unemployment I would be fine for the foreseeable future should something happen, especially since I could always defer my loans.

In fact the funny part is I would make MORE money if I had unemployment due to my loans being in deferment...
