Hi guys I currently use both barnacle wifi tether and eaytether for wired tether, will these still work with the Nexus? I read in a few places that you can't tether as easily when connected to 4G, I plan on rooting ASAP once I receive the phone. I have the easytether apk I am just worried it might not work properly and I use it almost daily just to browse the web at work...

Didn't Sprint stop the free tether on the Nexus S?

Yes they did, when it comes down to an option like this they might just take it off. Verizon seems to be a pretty money hungry carrier, so I doubt that they will leave it in. Only the AT&T, and T-Mobile versions of the Nexus S left it completely untouched. So I would definitely bet that Verizon would lock it down, especially with such a blazing fast LTE network.

But i should be able to get around that through rooting correct?

Yikes I missed that -- I read about them killing tethering but hadn't thought about the NS.

Bummer :(

Well if it's any consolation Google is well aware that carriers are causing major user disenfranchisement and they are working to walk that tightrope.

Though I'm dismayed to see that.

So partly on topic, somebody in the mega-thread mentioned they turn Verizon's "hotspot" service ($30/month) on and off as needed, basically paying a buck a session -- just to keep everything on the up and up and not risk losing unlimited data. So...

If I go that route, does anyone know whether I can turn VZW's Hotspot service on from my handset? Or would I have to log on to Verizon's website from a PC?

I "think" last time I tried to turn it on, it prompted me, if I would like to add the service.

That seems odd, although VZW does seem to prorate most things so I guess it could be a unintended consequence of the way their billing is set up.

and you never get billed extra from verizon or any kind of warnings from them?

are you grandfathered on the unlimited data?

I am grandfathered into unlimited data....I should mention that I am rooted and running CM7.1, and i have recently reverted to using the built in wifi tether in CM, and i use easytether for my wired tethering. You guys actually disabled teh tracking in gingerbread? I didn't even know you could do that.

Edit: I have never gotten a warning from Verizon....but as i said all i am doing is browsing the web.

my incredible is rooted too and i just downloaded the tether app from codes.google.com and i have yet to use it because I'm paranoid I will lose my unlimited data or get a bill for tethering. I havent flashed any custom roms either.

I just want to tether to my ipad for a few hours a week to surf the web on my commute, not do anything crazy like download huge movie files

so you think that makes a difference in you not getting caught?

I have never had an issue, I wasn't aware that people were getting notified from Verizon regularly for tethering with such small amounts of data. I have heard of cases of people using absurd amounts of data (excess of 10GB) and getting notified i use like 2GB a month including tethering. If you guys are trying to use something Google has that comes on the phone....yea maybe its easier for Verizon to track that but I honestly say that's all speculation and I don't have any data to back that up all I can share with you is my experiences.

I use PDAnet, I do VERY little tethering, One advantange of some 3rd party programs is they "remap" the browser id so it looks like the request came phone's browser and not a desktop browser.

My personal opinion: It's against the T.O.S. I'm not going to make a moral qualms about that. that said I have no intention of paying VZW $20-30 a months because I want to tether a couple hundred megs of data of couple months.

As far as "getting" caught, AT THIS POINT at least, I don't consider it a issue. Finding the "truth" in internet rumors is difficult, but I think so far at least the only people they've bothered are the idiots using 30-40-100 GB a month. That said most of the cases I've heard about even then they just sent a warning letter and didn't yank their plans. YMMV

so is the google tether i'm using not considered a 3rd party app? does it not "remap" the browser id like some of the other tether apps?

I can't answer that, my "guess" would "google tether" is nothing more then the app that is built into standard android roms (where carrier hasn't requested it be removed)

as far as re-mapping the browser_id my guess would be it doesn't.

again I have no direct knowledge, these are just my guesses....
