Rogers 911/Sense UI Update: Post your problems here

One issue that I seem to be having since the upgrade is that I am not recieving Text Messages of Facebook status updates from my friends. I used to get these all the time but now only a few seem to come through. Not sure if this is because of the upgrade or something on the Facebook end of things. I have checked by Facebook settings and it seems to be set correctly there to receive SMS updates.
Anyone else with this issue?

I just spoke to a Rogers tech about the issues we are having, specifically the reports of the Bluetooth calling not working. He informed me that since I have not yet updated my phone, he can't initiate a complaint for the issue, so they can not troubleshoot/test it!

I pointed out that all they need to do is get an updated Magic (which they should have), download a 3rd party Voice dialing app (since HTC removed the default voice dialer), pair a BT headset, and try to make a call! How hard is that!!!

He said they couldn't do that. He told me to go in to a Rogers store and test _my_ BT headset with an updated Magic in store, and if it didn't work to have the rep call Rogers tech support to report the issue "officially".

Can anyone please confirm if they are able to use a BT headset to make/receive/end/maintain phone calls? I mean can you still start a call with a 3rd party voice dialer by pressing the button on your headset? The tech claimed they have had NO complaints of this.

As for phones bricking, or other hardware issues after update, he assured me if it happened I would get a replacement phone.

Oh yeah, he also informs me that any phones that are NOT updated will eventually be completely blocked from the system and not be able to make or receive ANY calls!

I don't know what this will mean for rooted phones.

Hi Everyone.

Okay - Couple of things.

Bluetooth should work for both Dream and Magic. However, since the Magic update did not include voice dialer, BT cannot initiate calls. Everything else should be fine and voice dialer will be included in the 2.1 upgrade.

Voice is not being disabled on your phone. The call direct was to occur only once per customer as long as they speak to an agent. This is to ensure all customer are aware of this important update to ensure 911 calls complete.

I do appreciate that everyone is sharing their experience with the update. We are reviewing the forum. However, if the update has rendered your phone unusable, I do recommend that you call Technical Support. They should be able to help you trouble shoot and offer assistance.

.... and for those of you who are interested, here is the feature list I received from HTC.

The update to Magic included HTC Sense, which brought these features to the device:
• 7-panels
• Flash Lite 3.1
• Multi-Touch
• Social networks:
o Facebook
o Flickr
o Twitter

A number of HTC applications not on the original device also came as part of the update:

o Peep (Twitter client)
o Footprints
o Clock
o Exchange client enhancements
o People (with Facebook and Flickr integration)
o Phone
o Stocks
o Voice recorder
o Weather

Additionally, there are a number of HTC Widgets included. These differ from regular Google widgets in that they are designed to blend with the Sense UI design and are also more “interactive” in that many of them have internal scrolling, animation, etc. These include:

o Bookmarks
o Calendar
o Clock
o Footprints
o Mail
o Messages
o Music
o People
o Photo Album
o Photo Frame
o Search
o Settings
-> Airplane Mode
-> Bluetooth
-> GPS
-> Mobile Network
-> WiFi
o Stocks
o Twitter
o Weather

Mary,

It's not a "feature list" we want, this is marketing info meant to sell the phone to people with all the "features".

We want the technical change log so we know what they've actually done to our phones "under the hood". What code did they take out? What has been removed? What was changed to add these new features? How does this new and missing code affect the phone?

Emphasis mine.

Yeah, that's not gonna happen. I've called tech support several times, and they're not able to offer any assistance beyond telling me to take out the battery and offering to replace the device under warranty. Of course they're also very careful to point out that if they can't replicate the problems, then I'll be charged the full cost of replacing the device. They also ignore the rather salient point that the replacement they'll send me still has the same broken firmware and won't work any better.

Mary,

I'm not 100% on the Apache License, but is there any way we can legally compel them to release the notes?

RogersMary, here's an example of what we're looking for:

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.6/releasenotes/

They're called "release notes". They outline what was changed in a patch. Here's the wikipedia page on them:

Release notes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

We're not looking to find out if the new facebook app comes pre-installed.

lol Remember what I said some time ago? The only way to get a list of technical changes is to steal it. Or to get the chief programmer sooo drunk :)

Just to be sure. I don't know if it's been mentioned or not up to now.

I have not had any update from the Market since I installed the update. That is in addition to not being able to access a few applications that should have been accessible for the 1.5 (ugh!) Magic.

I opened the Market last night, and checked My Downloads. There was at least a dozen updates waiting for me. I checked the Notification option, and it was activated. So, even with notifications enabled, I don't get any update notification with the 1.5 up/downgrade provided by Rogers.

Of course, that is not even counting on the fact that the access to paid app was cut off to those who had a rooted phone.

I think you had something else wrong because as you said you are now getting updates. My daughter's Magic has been getting updates and she only has a voice plan (uses WiFI). If I put my SIM in she gets data and the expected updates.

Not true, that's just wrong. Nobody in Canada has paid apps in the Market. Ironically it is the rooters that can enable alternative markets to get paid apps although it isn't official and rather limited/shadowy.

There's a lot wrong with how R is doing Android but a few of the listed issues are something else.

I'm afraid that you are incorrect on your statement (sort of) rooters are running a program called Market Enabler. This app allows the rooted device to change the location that is reported to the Android Market. This will enable the user to get access to all apps compatible with their Android version in the area that they faking.

Well that was my point, he said that rooters were denied paid apps but the truth is that everyone is denied paid apps and it is only rooters that have a way around it to get paid apps. You are also correct but I didn't mention the specifics to how it was done partly because I'm not doing paid apps and only noticed the alternative markets. If I wanted pay apps I'd rather do it how you say if that gets me the official market pay apps.

With the nutbar nature of android in Canada I'm trying not to spend money that might go to waste. I'm waiting until the dust settles in this desert of technology we live in.

Ok, please read my post again,

I said that i don't have update notice. If I search My Downloads, I can see the updates. However, before the update, I had a notice in the taskbar saying "updates are ready", or something alike. now I don't have those notices anymore. Is is a 1.5 feature? I don't know. All I know is that I lost the notices.

I also said that the access to paid was was cut for those with ROOTED phones. I had a rooted phone, with the fixed 911 but, and I could buy all the apps I wanted with Market Enabler. If I could root my phone again, I would not complain about that. I know Rogers is not directly responsible for that, but Rogers still made me unroot my phone and rendered it unrootable, for now.

I have an un-rooted, non-updated Magic running 1.5, and I have NEVER received app update notices in my notification bar. Maybe this was a feature of the ROM you installed after you rooted?

I don't know. Maybe. Or it may be a feature of Android 1.6 since it has the new Market application.

As I said, I thought I'd mention it, in case it was a bug. Looks like it's not the case.

It is still a shame, though. This feature is quite useful.

I'll be sure to study that in detail, next Tuesday perhaps...
I never trusted that notice but it might require you to start Market one time, this is when I start seeing the notices. I start it up but don't check Downloads and later on I get a notice. I can't check the help screen since apparently "help is not available in your language" so even that is broken.

This is why I don't want to reread posts, it still makes little sense. You either have a rooted phone or a 911 updated phone. If you have a rooted phone but a 3rd party ROM that has the 911 code fix then that has nothing to do with the Rogers update. If you are rooted *and* have the official Rogers update then we need to talk and I'll even read your post again and again. :)
(of course the other option is that you were once rooted but not anymore. In which case of course you don't see paid apps, just like everyone else)

Bingo!

Of course, that part was an afterthought in my message. The main object being my question regarding new version notices from the Market app.

Looks like it has been answered. I will have to wait for someone to find an easy way to root our phone. Either that or I get sick enough of the situation and get a Milestone from Telus.

oh, well then that isn't a bug at all. In fact it is exactly as Rogers and the infidels intended it to be. jeepers.

You may or may not have to wait a long time. The easiest thing is to not rely on a contract phone. Go buy one that is rootable and/or unlocked. I almost bought another one today but would rather find something different, even a Dream. I see Magics, Dreams, Droids, yada for sale.

The update notification is in 1.6. As vikingsisson is saying, buy an rooted/non-updated phone. My Dream still has CM :D The update isn't that awful (for the Magic). I've been checking the Magic out. Real multitouch, flash player (a little bit crappy though, but still), Nice old Smart Dialer, etc. The Sense looks good too. It's not that bad for Magic owners. Rooted Dream owners, get the Magic, keep your root. My Magic will be parked until 2.x. And of course the downsides for the update are 1.5 and no root.

Guys,

Update on the GPS issue...

Factory reset of the phone did "fix" the problem. Got the GPS working again but had to re-initialize the phone from scratch as far as apps and contacts and the like go. Defenitely not ideal but got me going.

Today and yesterday was messing around with a few new GPS apps from the market (waze, maverick, etc) and just now bingo. Only one satellite and the last location sent out by InstaMapper 7 hours ago was 200 miles east of Virginia Beach out in the atlantic! I'm actually about 500 miles north of there, near Montreal, Quebec...

So GPS worked for exactly 7 days and is now locked up again. I'm seeing another factory reset in my future here. Is anyone else seeing this issue at all or is it something specific to me? Anyone else running InstaMapper continiously... Seems that the problem started when I started using this app.

Needless to say I'm not impressed at all...

Please be careful with thinking that the Milestone with be all flowers and cute bunnies... Motorola has recently started locking down their software in the European markets, just like HTC.

If you want to be "quarentee" root and install ROMs, I've realized that you need to buy the phone directly from Google, either as a developer phone or as a Nexus phone, or make sure that it's a "with Google" phone with the Google logo promoted on the back.

I don't know how the Milestone will get changed by Telus but I'll be patient and let a few people try before jumping ship.

Okay,

GPS issue is solved on my Magic...

It would appear as though the GPS is capable of locating indoors but not able to download the almanac / ephemeris data. Since I work from home I can go for days without bringing the phone outside. So after a few days this data goes stale and the GPS stops working.

Solution was to leave the phone outside for about 30 minutes (checked it after about 15 and was still not working) and it finally managed to get it'self all straightenned out.

That's a LONG time to wait for your GPS to start working especially when things like aGPS are supposed to aid with this. In the course of my research though I've found that it seems as though aGPS in general is not supported prior to Android 1.6. More over the current (Android 2.1) Qualcomm location library in the Android source tree does not support pre-loading the current location into the GPS. The function is there but it's just a stub right now that does nothing.

I have not seen anything in there that would allow for the almanac or ephemeris data to be pre-loaded onto the GPS either. So that's something that would involve Qualcomm, Google, HTC and Rogers! Either that or one REALLY GOOD developer who's got the GPSone programming manual (have yet to locate this ) and is ready to dive in and spend about 3 months figuring this out!

So not holding my breath... Maybe I just need to get out more. :)

Also having problem that default ringtone plays, even though I chose a different ringtone for a contact.
Tried making a folder in music called ringtones and then deleted it and made a folder called ringtones in root. Same thing happens. Also tried using system sounds instead of mp3. no luck
Is anybodies working?

Yah, I have this same problem and I've seen complaints on other forums as well. This is not a universal problem. Some people get custom ringtones to work. I have tried many things and my custom ringtones just never get used. The default ringtone plays for everything. I've tried a lot of different ringtones. The same ringtone that works for default will not get used if I choose it as a custom ringtone. Very frustrating, but I'm sure that with the money Rogers charges, they are working on a fix right now. Waiting....

After the update, haven't had any issues. I just have to set the ringtone using Rings Extended for my alerts and telephone calls. Then, I set up individual ringtones by using the music player to add them as a ringtone, then setting them in their profile. It does work, just tedious. Oh, this is on a Dream post 911
