Help Streaming media and the Tyrrany of the Sprint Proxies

ilike the idea of doing this work around not only to fix the streaming issue but to also speed up my Internet but my phone is not rooted and I don't have a way to root since I don't have access to a Windows PC therodore I can't root nor I can do the other work around to get my MSL. I called Sprint to get the MSL and they said they dint want to give it to me unless I wouldn't have a contract or if I pay the early termination fee of my contract. Foes this mean I'm prety much screwd unless I call Sprint to fix the issue on their own without speeding up my Internet?

im confused a bit by your post.

you do not have to root to get your MSL. there is an app called CDMA workshop. if you dont have a PC then you have a friend that does. you just need to connect once to this app to get the MSL.

there are also some other "hoop jumping" type ways to get your MSL, such as running an app that records logs from your device. in SOME logs the MSL is read out. google will help on this.

you can try another operator at Sprint until you get someone who will provide it. i understand why sprint hides this information form the general public and they have to error on the side of the lowest common denominator so we all suffer...

Okay, so, they finally gave me my MSL and YouTube works, but I thought this was also supposed to make my internet faster... it's actually, slower while using 4G. Normally it was 7-8 Mbps, now it's 3-4 Mbps. =/

Update: Never mind. it's running at the normal speed again, but not such a thing speed improvement. Well, I'm happy for now since youtube it's finally working lol

Does anyone know if the MSL code should be the same for the life of the phone, or does it change over time? I called Sprint a few weeks ago because my internet wasn't working, they finally gave me my MSL, but I lost it, however I managed to get my internet working. Today, streaming on my phone is failing again after updating my phone and I called Sprint to get that code and they gave it to me, but even though I don't have the old one that they gave, I can tell the one I got today is not the same one.

I think the MSL code is based on your phone, change phone, your MSL changes for that new phone.

It seems to me it's not working, because my speed test app shows my download at 0.27mbps and my upload 0.45. It seems I'm still be limited. I have all the settings changed to what you told us to have. The only weird thing I get is error #75 sign in failed please try again later. I get that every time I enable data

I called them and they said the error shows because I used morr than my monthly data usage. O called back and asked them to reprovision my phone, but they would not. I guess i'll call sprint

Update Vm finally called me back and they reprovisioned my phone, but they are still limiting my internet speed. Any suggestions on what to do?

FOLLOW UP:

I'm getting an error 129 occasionally now, and wouldn't let me access my data for a few seconds.

Normally, you connect from point A to point B on the internet. Or A to C. Or A to D.

A proxy is at a level far below your apps and other settings, and routes all traffic through a specified server - it affects all network traffic.

With a proxy, the above examples become A to P to C, A to P to D, A to P to B (where P is the proxy).

Apps have no idea that traffic is routed through a proxy, but they may suffer performance because of it.

Thanks for your excellent explanation! [emoji106]

Hello, I know this is very late in the device's life cycle, but I cannot locate the RTSP/HTTP settings in the advanced menu. Any reason why it would not appear? On Harmonia it would appear but be inaccessible, but on the JMZ stock rom it isn't there at all.
Wow - sorry I missed this. Hopefully you have mail alerts on so even if you don't care after all of this time, you'll at least know you weren't ignored!

Here's the thing - I don't really know the exact reason that Sprint started with proxies but I suspect that it goes back to the early days when (land) broadband was a fraction of today's speeds and traffic management was really necessary. Plus - I imagine that back when they charged by the MB, the proxies may have been part of the data tracking equation.

My point about your roms and situation - after years of this being a constant, Sprint has been making changes. So the EPST options in those roms depend on what the rom devs used as their app bases (iow - where did they get their dialer apps?).

My wife's stock HTC One M8 has only the RTSP proxy listed - not an HTTP one.

Did they finally drop the HTTP proxy or just remove it from the service menu? I'm not sure.

I run a rooted M8 with an M7 modified dialer so that I can get back the roam control options that they took away from me - but that dev didn't have the base for the proxies so now I don't have this option anymore, at all, either.

I imagine that it didn't help that some of the Virgin Mobile users were sure for a while that defeating proxies would get rid of their data throttling (it didn't in the long run).

So - maybe they've dropped it or are dropping it or maybe they're just hiding it now.

I know some Sprint guys - I'll ask around.
After changing the proxies, are they changed in the streaming player's data- /file setting.txt and settings.txt and is there any benefit in changing the user agent in there to a newer version?

My explanation about what proxies are and how they work answered this, although the answer was indirect.
