How To Droid tips, tricks, and easter eggs

I just picked up a Motorola Multimedia Station (docking station) for my Droid and the light is extremely bright. There is a brightness setting that allows you to dim the light, but it's still too light. Does anyone know a way to dim this light even more?
Have you checked out Brighteriffic, available free in the Market? I downloaded it recently and have only briefly checked it out so far, but it gives you the option to set a low and a regular brightness setting (as long as you are not using the Droid's automatic brightness setting), then put a widget on your home screen allowing you to switch between the two. Not sure if the low setting is low enough, but you could check it out.

I've been using their Timeriffic to control settings at night....you can set it to turn on airplane mode at a set time and on again at a set time, etc.

There's a free app called Locale that can do this.

Based on your GPS position, time of day, etc, it makes the phone behave differently (silent, loud, vibrate, etc.)

I downloaded it but I can't get it to get a lock on the GPS, never finds my location. Which is weird because Google maps/nav has no problems.

I looked it up for my Droid. It's not free (or isn't any more). They want $9.99. Is there another option?

I use "Setting Profiles" (it's the one with the hammer and anvil icon). It's the best I've used and I've tried them all from Night Ringer to Quick Profiles, to Locale, and several others. Setting Profiles lets me tweek everything and you can switch by profiles like work or home (how ever you choose to name it) using the home screen widget. Or you can have it switch by time or even location. It even lets you set additional rules. So say you wanted your phone silent but wanted to let a certain person on your contact list ring through, you can set it to let them. Oh yeah, and you can backup all your settings.

There's a free version and a $2.99 version. I downloaded the free version, but as soon as I realized it was the perfect profiles app I uninstalled and and downloaded the $2.99 version. Well worth the 3 bucks in my opinion.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Now here is an oddity - with both the normal process of turning off Notifications, and with Quick Profiles, no matter what the first message (email or text) still makes sound. After that, it's silent!

That is odd. I used Quick Profiles for a couple months (up until recently when I found the app Setting Profiles) and it never did that to me. Always worked flawless on my Droid.

K-9 Mail via the apps market, the only one I could find that does work with bizmail. Its free and have been using for about 2 months now. It is officially my defaul client for all email except gmail. Good luck

had to requote this, i hated the third party apps for this. Thanks!

Yeah, but that widget takes up some serious real estate. I prefer the single-function, single-space one-touch widgets. Because all I care about toggling is Bluetooth and WiFi.

Here's another 2.1 speech-to-text tip: Instead of hunting-and-punching the little microphone, you can swipe the virtual keyboard from left to right to bring up the voice prompt.

Swype is my latest Droid toy that I love.

It's cut my texting time in half. The word recognition is crazy cool and good. Auto spaces after each word.

I also enjoy the voice text of handcent, but swype gives me another option when I'm somewhere that I don't want to speak text.

How To Install The Swype Keyboard For Your Motorola Droid | Cell Phone How To, Cell Phone Reviews, New Cell Phones

Can't get it to work for me, I installed it, even followed the tutorial, but no words are appearing. I am swyping as instructed, but nothing appears.

Any Help?

For those of you who want to use your mp3 files as ringtones or notifications...I have a solution! First upload the Sharetones app. Its a great app that allows you to share, creat, and save your mp3 files to use for ringtones, notifications, and alarms. You will be able to save multiple ringtones, create your own, and save them. You won't be limited to just the one you assign through your music and you can assign them to your contacts as well.

Once you have the app, I synced my mp3s from my computer. When you run the app it will show you all of your songs and all ringtones others have already made. You also have the option of making your own from any part of the song you want! Save it and it will ask what you want to use it as; alarm, notification, ringtone... also gives you the option of assigning to a contact. Your songs will be in the list with the preinstalled sounds fof you to use at any time.

I have no affiliation with this app, I just bought a Droid n found a solution to my own problem! I haven't had any problems and it works just as it said!

Or you can go into the music player for the droid, select a song, and hit menu button and select "Use as Ringtone"
Done and doner

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but:

Icons on your home screen don't need to be just apps. Long press on a blank space and select "Shortcuts". I'll let you explore...

-E- Just found something else. Go into Music player, start a song, and at the "Now Playing" screen, press Q/W/E/R/T/Y/U/I/O/P. Each one skips to a specific percentage of the song. Really cool.

I came across something that is really cool/useful here.

To go into a diagnostic-type thing in android, go into Phone and type *#*#4636#*#* (4636=info on the dialpad) and it will take you to a page called "testing." There you can screw with all kinds of settings and battery stuff. Root is not required.

If you find yourself going there quite often, you might also want to know that you can create a shortcut to testing with anycut.
