Tips n Tricks thread.

Hello guys and gals...

New here, and to android (Been with Nokias for over 10yrs!) so hello all :D

Thought I'd share some tips with you... Top 3 (as a lot has already been covered)

1. When you add a "picture frame" widget to your android it will, by default, load in portrait mode. Press and hold the picture and yellow lines will show around the screen. At the bottom right of your pic, you'll see a grey tab. Hold and move the tab to change the size of the picture frame widget.

2. When watching a video, tap the power button once to lock the touchscreen. No more pressing a button by mistake :)

3. Google easter egg for you guys and gals ;)

Go to settings > about phone > and tap "android version" 5 times for a secret picture ;)

SilverDroid

On the second point, it only blacks out my screen. It does not lock it.

Are you using a different video player? Only works in the stock one

I don't think so. I just hit the youtube app that came on the phone to test it out and it keeps blacking out the screen. Also, I made a thread about it in another area of the forum, but there is no voice talk installed on this phone either. Is there something different with the SHW-M250S model or something? it seems lacking compared to the stuff I see in this thread.

after spending a lot of time to do this. the apps icons reset when i rebooted my phone. how do i fix that?
Provided you saved your list it should have survived a reboot.

If it is still giving you issues there is a free App on The Market you could download which sorts out your list alphabetically.
It's titled AppZorter Lite for Touchwiz.

additional kies connecting tips:

- delete files with a large number of chars in the file extension, usually in the picture folders as thumbnail files

- enable flight mode before connecting usb cable.

my phone sits at connecting constantly unless im in flight mode, regardless of any of the other steps ive read on various sites. its the single thing which now allows me to connect on a number of computers where it would sit at connecting previously.

does anyone have a way to make the middle screen your home without rooting? all tips i see involve rooting.
not sure why it was middle on my galaxy s and they switched it to the very left first home. middle allows me to quickly slide left or right for other much used screens...whereas left one makes me slide at least two screens to the right....anyone?

never mind...i can add a tips as a solution to my issue...i stumbled on go launcher ex with no root needed. learned from pocketnow tips video for galaxy s2 and although i have only just downloaded...i used tip it prompted for a migrate app that made copying from touchwiz pretty easy to get my homescreens.
I love this...the scrolling bottom icons...allowing 5 on screen rather than 4...resize widgets...9 home screens not 7. wow. wow. wow.

I found the incall volume to be a little low. When you max out the volume using the volume button it actually only goes to a default setting of 87 out of 100. If you would like to change the default settings here is what you need to do.
call this number *#*#197328640#*#*
This will open the service mode menu.
choose option [5] AUDIO
choose option [1] (VOICE CALL)
choose option [1] HANDSET
choose option [1] Volume
choose option [1] SRC Speech RX Volume
choose option [5] 5_lvl : 87
press the menu button (left side)
choose Key Input
enter a value between 0 and 100, I choose 100 the loudest setting.
press ok
now press the menu button and select back this should save (don't use the right side back key you normally use to navigate the phone or you will quit out of the settings) keep hitting the menu and back until you leave the service mode menu.
You will also note you can change volume settings for other things like bluetooth, head sets, video call etc.

Note: this is not permanent, if you turn off the phone it resets back to the default levels .
hey, when i press [5] audio then there is no option but there is caution menu being blocked. plz help

something changed on my phone and bloody AUTO CORRECT is now in text.

To swap back = settings/language and keyboard/samsung keyboard/XT9 Predictive text....untick it. (vise versa if you want it on)

------------------------

Secondly, It must have come from a GO! update, my incoming calls started to "read out" the callers id etc....very annoying. Turns out "driving mode" decided to turn its self on. Only way i found to stop it was to put the "VOICE" widget on a screen, and deactivate the driving mode.

Another tip for voice action that is funny :) You can change the intro that the lady says when you activate " What would you like to do? "

Goto: settings/Voice Input and output settings/Voice reg. settings/Voicetalk/ Voice Talk Settings/Customise main prompt

Can't tell you what I put instead ;-)

BtW if some are like me .. Im french canadian and I prefer my phone in English but voice recognition to be in french. You can do that by changing the in voice talk the language.

using the same downward swipe action to drop down the notification bar, will drag the bar back up again i.e. swipe down to drop down the bar, swipe down again in exact same way to collapse the bar to normal state.

saves having to swipe up from the bottom of the screen, and sometimes having to swipe up a few times because you didn't swipe far enough or whatever.

For those syncing with an Exchange server.......

...Took me a while to work out how to carry out an Online Exchange Address book search so thought this may be of use to someone...

-Open contacts
-Long press menu soft button to bring up search
-Type first few characters of contact name, when a result isn't found on the phone the online search button will appear
-Continue typing name and then press the online search button
-Choose the contact from the results to see details and optionally save to any of your address books.
