ok, so I've gotten a replacement phone from VZW the other day.. I had the dx and they sent me a dx2.

Can someone please tell me what the whole "upgrade" is?

I take A LOT of pix and noticed they're very pixilated-looking on my screen yet clear on a friends iPhone. Also wwf app is darker looking as well (kinda muddy looking tiles)

Should I just make do with the dx2 or call VZW yet again for another dx?

Also, when I connect my dx2 with my laptop, it shows me two different drivers (not technically savvy so I'm not sure it's the right term) and my files (particularly pix) are saved in a /mnt/sdcard-ext file as opposed to /mnt/sdcard (<---- can someone explain that as well?)

Thanks in advance for your time and sorry for being so long winded!

If by upgrade you're meaning from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4, various issues were addressed and documented here:

http://support.verizonwireless.com/pdf/system_update/droidx2.pdf.

When I connect my X2 to my computer, I get a prompt for both MOT and the generic drive that the machine sees the X2 as.. I just remove either one of those prompts and carry on with my tasks, as the folder paths are the same.

ynalam, why you see the pixelation has to do with the display. It's what you call a pentile display which does cause pixelation as you seem to be seeing. For me, I can't see it unless I hold my face up close to the display which is true for most people.

The "upgrade" from the DX to the DX2 is that you are now running with a dual-core 1ghz Tegra processor and a larger screen resolution. At first, people didn't see this upgrade being all that great as the initial release with Froyo (2.2.2) had many people grumbling about music skipping, poor performance of games, and the poor camera resolution.

With the release of Gingerbread (2.3.3 and 2.3.4), a lot of those problems have gone away. And, with many of us, rooting and flashing a custom ROM has opened up a whole new world of possibilities with this phone.

As for the /sdcard and /sdcard-ext, the /sdcard directory is a misnomer. That is in fact internal built-in memory in the phone. The Droid X2 has it's memory broken up as follows:

469mb for the System ROM
2.11GB of internal ROM
4.62GB for their "internal" SD card (which mounts to /sdcard)
/sdcard-ext is your actual Micro SD card. Consider this the "external" sd card, hence the "-ext" at the end of the directory. For me, I replaced the included SD card with my 32gb sdcard and that's where I store my music.

The camera, when launched, can be set to store all the pictures you take to the /sdcard-ext and that's what is happening here. You can set the camera to use the internal memory/sd card instead if you want. That's what I did.

Hopefully this helps. Also, for more on the display, you can read this "scathing" review of the X2:

I'm only pointing it out to you so you can get a more technical understanding of the PenTile display. This review is in the minority for X2s. Most reviews are pretty positive about the X2. It just had a bad launch with poor optimization that has been fixed with the Gingerbread release. You might read it and decide the X2 isn't for you, but give it chance. It really isn't all that bad.

I guess one thing is, coming from a DX to a DX2, you probably really won't see much of a difference on the outside, but what does count is what is under the hood and that is the dual-core 1ghz Tegra processor.

Great post! Couldn't have said it better!

Not a huge selection of ROMs for the DX2 but what it does have makes it work very well. Speed is vastly improved with the current crop of ROMs and battery life is awesome as well. I had many regrets after getting the X2 but I really am liking the phone now.

I read about the poor screen display and am trying to convince myself that it will be ok (yet in the back of my head I may not be able to get used to it.) I'm just a picture taker and it irks me to see these turn out "grainy" looking.

I'll give it a couple more days and see if I can truly live with it. I guess the dx2 is "better" than the dx?

It's a downgrade. I've had the DX2 for a few months now and it has bluetooth issues, speakerphone issues, text messaging issues. It really sucks. My wife still has her original DX, no problems. And of course we all know about the crappy 'screen door' effect that the DX2 has with the screen. Motorola went cheap this last time around.

I just had to reboot the phone because the speakerphone stopped working, now it's working again for the moment. the software is buggy as all hell.

When I upgraded from the X to the X2 I noticed a difference in speed. With the dual core I am able to have way more apps running at once without it bogging down. This is of course after rooting it and running custom rom (Eclipse) on it.

I didn't notice huge difference right off the bat either, but after good amount of usage I started to notice it keeping up better than the original Droid X.
