Now that we have a usable recovery, it's time to start talking about a custom ROM. I am not a developer. I did not sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night. I have some idea about how all this works but not enough to start doing anything such as this.

So the question is: are you, the folks on this forum, interested in a ROM being developed and would you be willing to offer financial support of such?

Time & ideas are not free. Money has to change hands. ROM developers have needs - Red Bull for energy & alertness, snacks to keep their strength up, beer to celebrate success or drown the bitterness of failure, money to replaced bricked devices... Get the picture?

Reply to this thread, list what you would like to see in a ROM and what you are willing to offer as incentive pay.

Here is a compliled list:

Zero bloat
Infrustructure mode wi-fi tethering
Overclockable kernal
Plain android UI with plain unlock screen
Get rid of that "would you like to send a message" when I reject a call
Control of vibrate alert settings - more than just on or off
Grass live wall-paper
Audio DSP/EQ
Direct non-VVM connection to voice-mail when you hit the VM button in the dialer.
Silent boot.
Strip it of Bootanimation.
Strip it of the fully-charged "unplug charger" notification.
Add control of color schemes, I don't like the 2.3.3 features.
Give me back the speed and agility of rooted 2.2.1, 2.3.3 is a dog.
Strip out the "Verizon" features in the stock browser.
Strip out Flash, now that even Adobe realizes what a CF it was, as an option.
cyanogenmod camera options.
Upgrade path to 2.3.3 from titaniumly debloated 2.2.1

I'd put $20 towards development of such a ROM, how about you?

I am in!

I would love it if it were just stripped of bloat and had a few minor fixes like:

Direct non-VVM connection to voice-mail when you hit the VM button in the dialer.
Silent boot.
Strip it of Bootanimation.
Strip it of the message to text reply to a declined call.
Strip it of the fully-charged "unplug charger" notification.
Add control of color schemes, I don't like the 2.3.3 features.
Give me back the speed and agility of rooted 2.2.1, 2.3.3 is a dog.
Strip out the "Verizon" features in the stock browser.
Strip out Flash, now that even Adobe realizes what a CF it was.

I've been looking into cyanogen mod alot lately. There's others asking them to bring it to commando. One feature that stood out to me was that little box when you open the camera. If you're holding your phone still, you're supposed to be able to touch anywhere in the field of view, the box moves there and auto focuses on that point. cyanogenmod makes this feature, that's supposed to be there, work.

I don't know much about anything, but there's alot of other cool stuff to CM.

I'm in! I'm still running 2.2.1 though (unable to upgrade due to uninstalling stock bloat) so I dont even think the recovery will work for me. I would still love to see some development for Commando. I'd just like a stripped-of-bloat, clean and crisp blacked out ROM because I ( like BLACKTOOTHGRIN) embrace the darkness! LoL!

For recovery it doesnt matter what version of android you are using.

That is my intention, either GNM or the folks at Cyanogen for starters.

Something along the lines of: "look, we have this device and there are this many people who want to see a ROM and this % are willing to offer donations to see it happen."

Really a port of cyanogen would be nice, but it needs to be stable. GNM was part of a group that developed a ROM (Velocity) for the LG Ally that turned it into a completely different phone.

There are only four days left in the poll and only seven people have voted. I don't know if we will be able to sell the idea...

I think part of this is that this phone does not have a large following by people who are interested in hacking and modding. People who are into that sort of thing are going to buy a phone with more powerful specs. I'm a farmer & a firefighter and I bought this phone based purely on my desire to have a durable phone and starting messing with it out of frustration with the bloat and battery life, and to be able to tether when I am at the fire station. I had an lg ally before and that is what introduced me to Android and phone hacking. I mentioned the Velocity ROM, it took a terrible phone - laggy slow and poor battery life and fixed all those problems. I broke the screen twice, and about the second time is when the Commando came out so I bought one instead. I doubt any developer is going to spend any time on a phone that less than 10 people are interested in having a ROM for. I was hoping that maybe 40-50 would respond and then that would show some interest and support.

I took a look at your list and I thought I'd throw out my $.02 :p

I know you're looking for a new rom, but you can do some of this stuff with a rooted phone...

Zero bloat

Use titanium pro to uninstall bloatware. If that doesn't work, use root explorer to delete the apk in /system/apps (be very careful with this way, it's the nuclear option)

Infrustructure mode wi-fi tethering

This program does infrastructure wi-fi tethering, I don't know what you'll have to do to get it to work specifically for the commando, though
android-wifi-tether - Wireless Tether for Root Users - Google Project Hosting

Overclockable kernal

Note: Kernel's can be released separately from custom ROMs, I just downloaded the source code, and i'm not promising anything at all, but i'll look into it.

Plain android UI with plain unlock screen

Have anybody thought of working on building a theme to take care of this? (It might work, or it might be something that's built into the system, i'm not 100% sure, but i'll be looking into it)

Get rid of that "would you like to send a message" when I reject a call

That's really stupid, possibly a stock rom issue, could be a phone.apk issue, once again, looking into it...

Control of vibrate alert settings - more than just on or off

What do you mean by this, do you mean separate action for separate notifications, or does it not allow the phone to ring/vibrate (In settings -> sounds, there are vibration controls) or are you talking about controlling the intensity of the vibration?

Grass live wall-paper

or
https://market.android.com/details?...21naWJhcmEuYW5kcm9pZC5ncmFzcy53YWxscGFwZXIiXQ..
Or did you mean something else :p

Audio DSP/EQ

Here's the DSP Manager off CyanogenMod
accidentally deleted my dsp manager apk? - CyanogenMod Forum
(Not 100% sure if it'll work, but it's a good dsp manager (used it on my HTC Aria when I tried out cyanogenmod, and also on my Xperia Play when I was using cyanogen)

Direct non-VVM connection to voice-mail when you hit the VM button in the dialer.

Have you tried changing settings -> call settings -> voicemail service to another provider? (I use google voice, I no longer need to call my voicemail :p)
Also, sounds like this is a phone.apk issue, maybe finding a stock version will fix it (it might also do bad stuff to your phone, I don't know)

Silent boot.

Instructions in another thread?

Strip it of Bootanimation.

Boot animations are nice, cause they let you know when you managed to bootloop your phone, mind you, the Commando one is pretty dang annoying :p

Strip it of the fully-charged "unplug charger" notification.

Yupp, i've seen that on my wife's phone, pretty dang annoying, might be software, might be kernel, I'd have to look into it...

Add control of color schemes, I don't like the 2.3.3 features.

Metamorph for root
https://market.android.com/details?...wsMSwxLDEsInN0ZXJpY3Nvbi54ZGEubWV0YW1vcnBoIl0.

Give me back the speed and agility of rooted 2.2.1, 2.3.3 is a dog.

Kernel issues.

Strip out the "Verizon" features in the stock browser.

Another thread deals with this

Strip out Flash, now that even Adobe realizes what a CF it was, as an option.

You can delete flash (as a rooted user) from /system/apps and it's gone (then you can redownload it from the market, and it can be moved to sd card, or just never deal with it again!)

cyanogenmod camera options.

Possible option for cyanogenmod camera
Original camera.apk - CyanogenMod Forum
(once again, don't know if it'll work with the commando)

Upgrade path to 2.3.3 from titaniumly debloated 2.2.1

Currently, nandroid backup, if we're lucky, somebody will learn how to build the source code from 2.2.1 into a flashable file and you guys will have it available to you.

Wait till after the rom is out and working. Never, ever donate before there's proof works been done (i.e. release candidate that work.) Always check to make sure that the person who claims to be the Author is actually the Author (there were (and maybe still are)) issues on xda-developers with a$$holes who would rip off somebody else's work, put a theme over it, and claim it as theirs.

(note: i'm not promising anything, I'm looking into the source code for this because it intrigues me, and reading the source code has pushed me back into being a computer science major :p we'll see where this goes :p)

paxchristos;
That is a nice compilation of the little tweaks available. Good work!

As to your solution to the voicemail issue:
I was hoping to fix the force-close issue when you touch the VM button in the stock dialer; it still occurs even if you change VM service provider. Of course it does this because I removed the VVM app, but I will never use it anyway with it's annoying VVM ad everytime you want to check VM.

How can we get the market entries from deleted apps to go away......to not appear in the "Not installed" app list in the Market?

Still new to the ROM scene, i was wondering what is stopping a different rom from being flashed now that the recovery is available? are roms phone specific? or are people afraid to brick since there is no way to boot into recovery?
Roms are phone specific, the quickest to brick your phone is to flash another phones rom another phones rom.

There aren't too many developers who have this phone, and if you brick the phone (as of right now) its bricked for good... (no hardware button combo to recovery)

I tried to install the linked camera app but it won't install. Probably has to be done as an update.zip. I wish I knew more about this but the more I read the less I understand...

One thing you could try it's goto /system/app, delete/rename (i.e.camera.apk.backup) the camera apk, copy/paste the new one over, chmod the new one, then try to run it... (no guarantees, just an idea)

Can anyone suggest a source for a 2.3.3 dialer.apk package that might work as a replacement.....it should probably come from a Verizon device that does not come stock with Visual Voice Mail app.

I like the standard dialer, but for the VVM ad. Would like to get rid of the "Groups" tab as well but it is not a major problem.

here's a link for the Xperia play phone.apk, it's pretty much stock dialer
http://db.tt/g4DvHAfN
Try the same as above, it might work...

The xperia play does come stock with vvm, but after I installed google voice, and told my phone to use that instead out vvm, it does dial google voice (I think... I've never called google voice to get my voicemail, I just use the android app, but it didn't sound like verizon's voicemail system)

(my Xperia play is currently running stock 2.3.3 but with an unlocked bootloader, if anybody needs/wants the must current cyanogenmod apk's, get me a list, I have a little free time before and after thanksgiving where I can flash and get the most current apk's)

Well, the poll has closed and the results are in. Two-thirds of the respondents want a better ROM and are willing to support it financially, one quarter want it but are unable to help, and the remainder are happy how it is. Thanks to those who voted. Its probably not a good idea to point out that out of over 200 views only 12 people voted...
