I'm sure this has been discussed somewhere but I don't know how to find it. I have my Epic rooted (with Clockwork Mod) and my phone automatically downloaded the EI22 Gingerbread update. Can I just install it? Do I need to change something about the file or just delete it altogether and then update it manually? Do I even want the update? Thanks!!

Root GB Update While Rooted

When you rooted your phone, did you install a custom ROM or did you leave the stock ROM on there?

If you simply rooted, did not uninstall any bloatware, and did not install a custom recovery...you should have absolutely no problems.
I cannot confirm the bloatware part. For previous updates, this has caused the update to fail...
I did see one instance where someone had CWM Recovery, and the person THOUGHT that is what caused it to fail...
If you are in doubt, you should just flash back to stock with ODIN.

If you igo through with it let me know. I had same question. Just rooted my wife and I epic last week then ota gingerbread comes out ...didn't change or delete anything but didn't want to brick either, rather stay rooted with froyo and wait for ics if we are lucky

I think that would be a long and disappointing wait... I would suggest just waiting until the Dev's work out all the bugs on the EI22 GB Roms, and then flashing one of those...
In fact, I have seen a few ICS Roms floating around already, but I doubt they are ready for everyday use right now.

A fellow named Paul at XDA posted a ROM based on Stock Gingerbread with very few enhancements. If you want to stay rooted, you're better off using that. I'm on a Bonsai version of FroYo and it's either use Paul's ROM or Odin back to stock FroYo, run the official upgrade and reload everything from backups and the Android Market.
If you want to avoid having to remember all of your apps, download an app-sharing utility and have the entire list sent to your email address. Useful if you have to find everything all over again, since you can't simply backup FroYo versions and expect to restore them in Gingerbread without issues.

I applied the update, it started to install, then I got the yellow exclamation point. I removed the battery, rebooted with CWM, and it rebooted just fine (but still in froyo). I had a rooted phone and I had removed all the bloatware from it (if that means anything). Thanks for the help so far guys! Should I just not even worry about Gingerbread? Would I really be missing anything?

The only thing that you could possibly miss out on would be apps which only support GB, but I don't think you have to worry about it at this time.
Otherwise, you can check out the GB enhancements and see if anything strikes you as a must have feature...

I love GB!!! I installed Google Video Chat which works great: GTalk W/Video-Audio Working on EG22/EH17/EI22-D/L Links Updated 12-4-11 - xda-developers
GB also has nice options to disable 3G quickly to save battery life, among a host of other features. Highly recommend you try out the CleanGB ROM.
Fixes a few issues in 2.2 as well, such as the annoying texting issue that randomly drops the area code of the recipient so you can't text them.

I had the same problem.
I don't know how my phone was rooted, but I know the ROM has not been changed.
Right now I have:
Firmware: 2.2.1
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9
Build number: FROYO.EC05
So I guess I need to know how to tell how my phone is rooted, unroot it, allow the upgrade to happen, then root it again.
Please help.
