Would you recommend the Droid X?

Hi! I'm from the LG Ally community and was hoping I could get your thoughts on this phone. I have a friend that's selling one for a really great price. My Ally is an entry level android phone but I'm wondering how the DX compares. Also, what are some of the good things and bad things about it. I'm used to a keyboard but I know it doesn't have a physical one but everyone says you get used to that.

Also, I've been able to root and rom my Ally. Can that be done easily with the DX?

And what is an esn and how do I check it?

Thanks for any info you can give me.

The DX has a beautiful display, snappy processor, is easy to root using z4root, and can run any keyboard you want. The build is solid, the form factor is practical, and the camera button adds flexibility in a time when many manufacturers are removing flexibility.

There are few consistent complaints about this phone, and it has the same shortcomings as any smartphone. It should be viable for at least another year.

I don't know about the Gingerbread update, though. I am still using, and happy with, the stock firmware/Android version.

Dunno about the ESN.

Each device has a unique ESN (electronic serial number). If you're wanting to check it to make sure it has a clean ESN, you can call Verizon and give them the number.

As far as rooting and ROMS go, the X is an easy device to work with, and there is a pretty large library of ROMs for it. Some of the more popular GB ROMs are:

- Apex 2 RC3
- Shuji
- SSM
- CM7 (2nd init)
- MIUI (2nd init)
- Vortex

To flash any of these, you would need to be on either 602 or 605.

I definitely recommend it if the price is right especially over the Ally. Colornshape already covered the good points, but I also think you should try using it for as long as you are allowed first. The reason is there are some people who hate the droid x (theirs is buggy or they have constant complaints about certain features that aren't working or that they want) while the majority of us are very happy with it and have little or no complaints. You should find out which one you are. Considering the bootloader is still locked, the developer support for the x is pretty amazing, so many good roms with constant updates.

It doesn't have LTE (4g) capabilities. That is the ONLY thing that would cause me to upgrade. Other than that, it is an awesome phone! Great screen, decent battery life (lasts all day), plenty fast enough (but it is a single core phone), and it is thinner than a lot of phones out there now.

If the price is right I would say get it.

My first Android was an LG Ally. Loved it and was concerned about going to an all touch keyboard myself. Having had the Droid X for 10 months now I wonder how I ever got along with that LG Ally :). I actually had to revert back to it for a few days a couple of weeks ago while I was drying my wet DX, and must say that there is no comparison.

Droid X is much faster, has much more internal memory. HD display much better than the Ally.

You can check the ESN over the phone with Verizon. If you are buying a used phone from a local seller (craigslist) it's best to have them meet you at the local Verizon corporate store. You can have the phone transferred to your account and pay them there. I have bought a phone and sold a phone that way. The seller/buyer had no problem waiting the few minutes it took to switch the phone over.

If you are buying via eBay, make sure the seller has a high rating (and many ratings) for selling cell phones. You're still at risk, but it helps to reduce the risk if that criteria is met.

I've had the Droid X since launch date and still love it!

i also made the switch from the Ally to the DX. had mine since about April of this year, and i can honestly say i made the right choice for myself. love my DX. it is far superior to my old LG handset. but everybody is different. i agree with the folks who say test it out first and then decide. it may be exactly what you're looking for and it may not.

i personally haven't experienced any major issues with this phone, like some other folks have, but i haven't modded it much either. i haven't had to. this is just such a beautiful piece of hardware. i'll probably hold onto it even after i make the upgrade to dual-core.

+1 to all the above.

I've had mine now for almost 13 months and I love it. I've customized it quite a bit (rooted OC/UV) and its configured exactly as I want/need. There are some who have posted that it isn't for them (for a variety of reasons), but as stated previously the vast majority of us DX users are quite happy. You may want to try it for a few days if you can arrange that as part of your purchase, and see how you like it.

I've never used an Ally so I can't compare the two - I've come to Android from the Palm world - but to me the DX is by far the BEST phone I've ever owned. Is it perfect? no, but the the few issues it has are nothing compared to what I've had to deal with previously. And to let you know, the main issue I see with the DX is the lag that occurs sometimes when swiping from homescreen to homescreen, and sometimes also switching between apps. But to me a few seconds between screens or apps every now and then is not a problem.

Some of the things I like about my DX:

*beautiful big hi-res screen
*phone volume and call clarity are excellent, even the speakerphone works well
*the radios are spot on, no dropped signal problems for phone or data
*battery life is pretty darn good
*hot spot functionality works well for those few times I'm not near a public station and really need it
*form factor works well for my big mitts
*lots of apps available that work well on the DX, many (most?) are free
*the camera on my phone takes pretty good pictures and video - I know some have complained here about the DX's camera but that may be an issue only with certain phones

yeah, I'll probably upgrade at some point. Droid Prime? Maybe... or perhaps something with a physical keyboard like the to be announced Droid 4 or something similar (that is about the only thing I miss from my previous Palm phone - I just like the tactile feel of real keys).

Hope this helps!:D

Don't mean to rain on your parade, but I had 4 different Droid x and 1 Droid x 2

It's the worst phone I've ever owned.
People get sentimental and gave misplaced loyalties and so they stick to something even when they know they shouldn't
Every single x I had had the same problems
Dropped calls
Dropped 3g
Random reboots at least 6 battery pulls daily
Screen lagged
Over heated
Headphone jack broke
Battery died in about 6 hrs and I had the extended battery
Ton of driver conflicts
My WiFi broke
For some reason the processor worked the slowest for me but then again I guess I might of expected it to work like its described ( multitasking)

I could keep going...
I definitely hated this phone, I lost so much school work on it and it was useless at work
I need the email and calculator and memo pad like crazy there and with the random reboots and over heating and apps shutting down it was so unreliable
I think a phone that needs to be rooted to get it to work and opperate as its described and intended is the same as being sold an unfinished product
I wouldn't buy a phone I have to fix....

So I don't recommend it in any way shape or form

I have a incredible 2 now and I have nothing but good things to say
Had it a week not once has it froze or rebooted or locked up or over heated
It's not rooted and I have even more apps and music than before and its amazing
Screen color is 10 times better way sharper battery lasts me 2 days

No on the Droid x

I've had the X since day one, and I can honestly say the phone is purely awesome. Sure there have been issues along the way but the phone is great. My battery has lasted me at least 18 hours multiple times. The screen is better then quite a few newer phones *cough* bionic, after the GB update, most of the issues I had went bye bye.

Different people are gonna have different experiences with the phone. It depends on what ya do with it. I love mine, I love that 2nd init has been achieved so we can run MIUI and CM7 cause they honestly give this phone a new life.

The worst part about the phone is the camera. I've never been able to take a great indoor picture. But beside that, I love my X. When I retire it, it'll be for something that can perform just as well.

Thanks for all of the replies! I'm getting the X tomorrow and can't wait to root it and try some of the ROMs. I love that there's such a big X community and lots of ROMs to choose from. I do have a few questions....what is 2nd init? I hear lots about MIUI and CM7 but I have no idea what's so great about them. Any insight you can give me?

Any model of phone is going to have a few bad apples. Your experience is not that of the majority and your statement that people stick to what they know even when the shouldn't is just plain stupid beyond belief. There are thousands of X owners here that have had many many different types of phones and still consider this the best phone they've ever had by far...myself included.

In fact, yesterday I went to a local vzw phone and evaluated the RAZR as I really wanted to upgrade to it given it's capabilities, but left realizing my X was still a better phone than the new RAZR:

http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid-razr/448375-why-couldnt-razr-have-been-x3.html#post3495697

I've had my X since July of 2010. It was the most amazing phone for it's time but even more amazing is how good it still is 1.5 years later compared to many other current new phones.

If I were going to go out and by a droid now, I'd still pick the X. It may not be the fastest but overall balance of capabilities and form factor make this a current winner. The battery life alone is enough to justify this phone over all others.

the X proved indispensable once again today. got lost in a large city on my way to getting my car fixed. GPS and google maps navigation got me unlost within minutes. made my appointment with 15 minutes to spare instead of driving around aimlessly looking for the right road. extended battery handled it like a champ and got me through a long wait at the dealer, as well. wish i would have had this phone years ago, lol.

this is why i love android, its not just the dx that did this for you, its android software, the dx was the device used to help, but the software is what did it, take that ios!
lol

nah really in all honesty the dx is still a powerhouse of a phone, i dont think mine will ever break, it runs so smooth, and when it doesnt, sbf it and start over, brand new again. and it still has great dev support!
