iPhone 3GS faster than Nexus One?

Please stop going to engadet for their iphone vs android tests cause they always leave information out. The big thing they left out of this one is that resolution affects fps. So iphone 3gs resolution is 480x320 nexus one is 480x800. Not to mention apps in the background would also slow the fps down.

But the proof is the image. A 3d game called ExZues is being ported from the iphone on the 17th or 18th and they have spent some time optimizing it for the N1. My friend has it also on his iphone so we will see. Or at least I will.

But engadet is probably thinking fps for cell phones works like on a pc, where resolution doesnt much matter. For example http://www.abstractworlds.com/strangemaze/index.php?id=bench I know its old but it shows that phones using the same chip at high resolutions decreases fps.

Guys, you should read the source, there's much more info than on engadget : http://distinctivegame.wordpress.com/2010/02/09/dd-tech-talk-1-nexus-versus-iphone-3gs/
For example he explains that if he sets the nexus at the same resolution as the iphone 3GS the framerate goes from 30 to 40 fps, but still slower than the iPhone. Anyway, if you look at the specs of both GPUs, the one in the iphone is supposed to be better (fillrate and polygons/second) so it's not really a surprise.
The iphone 3GS and ipod 2009 are marketted as gaming consoles so they'd better be good at displaying games. I don't think the Nexus One's main appeal is that you can play games on it.

i think this whole review thing on engadget is idiotic. they love to copare apples to oranges. like an earlier poster said there is no mention of the screen resolution. there is no mention that the nexus is not running other programs. we know the iphone is not because it cant be. he does mention something about the nexus not being optimized for the video he is showing, and he does say "yet". thats like saying my porshe has square wheels and drives slower than my honda. duh. if its not optimized yet for this demo then why would there be a demo? wait till it is optimized and then do a review. but i think engadget being an apple fanboy might not do that.

but lets look at some fact of the video. when he starts adding characters the iphone fps is cut by more than half and the nexus only about a third.

that is 50% percent loss vs 33% for you engadget, and again lets not forget the 340x480 vs 800x480. or 163200 vs 384000 pixels. the nexus has more than double the pixels. you do the math.

like an earlier poster said there is no mention of the screen resolution.
And as I said if you follow the source link on engadget you have a whole paragraph on the resolution by the guy who did the test :

One of the most important differences between these two devices is the fact that the Nexus has a much higher resolution screen, which means that the GPU has to fill 2.5 times as many pixels on the Nexus than it does on the iPhone. OK, so let’s change the viewport on the Nexus to the same size as the iPhone just so we can compare the two equally. With just two characters on screen, switching the viewport size to 480

i've owned both... from a real world standpoint, the Nexus is noticeably faster than the 3GS... end of story for me... i don't believe all these stupid videos... it's way to easy to tilt the odds in favor of one device over another... i trust no one, let alone a stupid video on engadget or youtube... i trust my own first hand experiences... not some smoke and mirror show from some internet propaganda machine....

one last thing.... F#CK Engadget.... they have Apple's c@ck shoved so far up their @$$es it's painful to even watch...

Engadget cannot be trusted with reviews. Period. I go there and read because I love reading about electronics and gadgets but I've quit reading any kind of reviews beyond hands on.

I simply do not trust them to be honest and fair in reviews. I have several reasons but the big one lately is them flat out stating that they are more interested in clicks and ad money than anything else.

I would prefer that they put editorial integrity before clicks but they don't see it that way and will say and post ANYTHING as long as it gets them clicks, even if it's a lie or untrue.

Does anyone seriously trust engadget to set the devices up properly to make sure the test is as fair as possible? I thought not.:D More likely they made sure the Nexus was at a disadvantage of some kind to ensure the test came out the way they wanted. That's how they operate now.

lol.

What? Did you even bother to look at the supported link? It clearly shows the Nexus being slower, even with the Nexus Ones screen resolution matching the iPhone 3GS.

And if anyone is a fanboy it would be the people in this thread that can't see the truth.

Don't get me wrong here..the Nexus One is a GREAT phone but Google has ALOT of internal software upgrades to do yet to the Nexus One. I just hope they don't just decide one day that their tired of supporting the phone and move on to a different phone to support. I think I would cry after spending the amount of money on the Nexus and all the accessories for it.

Of course they will! you've just got to hope that you get your year (or whatever you expect for a lifetime) out of it.

The Iphone has a better GPU so it is faster in games. If games are your main priority you would likely be better off with Iphone anways because there are tons of games in the appstore. I never liked alot of the games because they are difficult to play with the touchscreen the ones that use accelerometer are much better and theres a pretty good selection of those for android but I think Iphone will always have way more games.

The Nexus will be faster for everything else though 1ghz vs I think it was 600mhz on Iphone...no contest LOL

This isn't necessarily true. How well a phone runs is also heavily dependent on how well it's software is optimized to take advantage of it's hardware. The N1 is technically more powerful, but the iPhone will complete it's tasks/transitions better because it's well optimized and a more thought out product.

I love my N1, but Android needs some serious work to actually take full advantage of all the raw power.

Nah, I have both, I can assure you the Nexus One is way faster at everything else.

Huh? I use both what examples? Everything is faster on the Nexus except games that I use. I actually don't use my Iphone anymore but it is laggy opening and closing pretty much anything compared to Nexus not to mention can only open one thing at a time on Iphone. It is pitiful compared to Nexus with everything except games. That's why I say up above if you want to play games get Iphone it is better but for everything else Nexus is better.

Actually, web browsing is faster in the 3Gs. I was quite surprised when I found out. I compared my 3Gs with my Nexus in lot of pages (my intention had been recording a video showing how faster the Nexus One was :D ). Same wifi, no cache... The 3Gs renders any web faster.

I still prefer Android browsing experience because it has text wrap, and iPhone's Safari doesn't.

Well that mostly depend on your provider for 3g, for WiFi nope, I actually get 4963kbps over wifi on my Nexus using speedtest and only 4461kbps on my Iphone both using the same app (Speedtest), just tried it a few times and Nexus win everytime by around 500.

Plus soon Nexus one gets Flash 10.1 which mean Nexus One browser will blow away Iphone Browser LOL Can watch movies and TV on Hulu.com with Nexus One then! No comparison...Nexus is better.
