Help Problems setting up pop3 email facility

I have just changed from a BlackBerry to the htc Desire S & am having all sorts of problems trying to persuade it to deal with my pop3 emails. I've religiously followed the instructions & the Incoming settings are accepted but when I put in the Outgoing details it always comes up with "Your outgoing server does not support authentication. Please verify your outgoing server settings".

I am not a computer/phone expert but managed to set up my BlackBerry without any problem. In this case, after several failures I copied the settings as in my Outlook Internet email settings. No luck.

I contacted the technical dept of Zen (the ISP) they were very knowledgeable & helpful but, after 90 minutes effort finally gave up.

All instructions on the htc site just repeat the user manual instructions which, in this case, does not work. I've emailed htc but have received no reply.

I contacted the service provider - Vodafone. They advised that it is difficult to operate pop3 emails with the standard mobile phone Server port at 25 & suggested that I if I wish to use my business email address (rather that getting a new gmail one) then I would be best advised to return the phone & get a new BlackBerry.

I find it hard to believe that it is not possible to receive & send normal emails on a modern smartphone & am hoping that someone may be able to guide my through an installation/troubleshooting process that will work.

I have to return the phone by Thursday if I'm not going to keep it so would greatly appreciate help soon!!!

Thanks for the suggestion. I've checked that site but don't really understand enough to know what to do with it!

I'm not sure what "trying other email client" means. Does it require me to change webmail (domain) host from where my BlackBerry collected mail? On the set-up it seems to accept the inbound bit OK. Or would I need to change our ISP?, it is the outgoing bit that seems to present a problem.

Would I still be able to use my normal email address & not have to change to a gmail, hotmail, yahoo or any of those types of email?

First, you need to install this app from the market.
Then you need to configure it with your existing email address, same as you did with the email client that is already installed in your phone.

I used to have trouble setting up pop address for my ISP. The incoming server had to contain the ISP address and the outgoing server (SMTP) had to have the netowrk operator server address. This was to have a Virgin (or ntlworld) email address through an o2 handset. Apparently Virgin did not support sending through anothers smtp server.

With Gmail I don't bother, I just forward all emails to my Gmail account and use the 'send as' option for replies.

I was trying to avoid going through Gmail but now think this may be the only solution. Either that or go back to BlackBerry.

I have, at last, spoken with an htc technician who knows both Zen (the SMTP) and Namesco & he assures me it should work with both. He suggested connecting via Wi-Fi rather that vodafone but it still didn't work.

Is the 'send as' option on the phone or does it have to be set up for the gmail account as a whole?

That is set up on line in your Gmail account. I think it is a matter of adding a from address. The only issue with it is that is sends as if from that address but adds a comment like 'sent via Gmail' - can't remember the exact phrase it uses.

Have you actually tried entering the SMTP address for your network provider and pop address for your ISP email account? As I stated earlier, that is what I had to do so that emails could be sent from the account from the phone. As you mentioned that it was the SMTP addres that seems to be generating an error it may be worth a try.

Yes I tried that (actually over the hours I've tried every possible combination) but still without success.

Thanks for the suggestions anyway.

Regret I've now given up after about 38 hours of trying different things & with help from many very helpful people various forums, vodafone, Zen (ISP), Namesco (domain host), and htc! I finally gave up when htc technicians. with access to all my details & passwords etc, tried to setup my email facility on their Desire S and failed to do so. They were surprised but acknowledged that, despite working with the various suppliers, they just could not do it.

The only thing I could do that would work, as suggested by AeronK, is forward all incoming emails to the gmail account, collect from there & set the outgoing mails to "send as" so it would go with the correct address but I really don't want these extra links in the system & messages about being sent via gmail - more to go wrong.

It's a pity; I liked everything else on the phone but am sending it back & will get a BalckBerry Torch.

htc are now carrying out a "detailed investigation" & will give me the report in a couple of weeks time. I shall post that on this forum.

Problem solved, at the Outgoing server screen just change the Port to the correct port, then BEFORE you deselect Required sign-in, go down and delete the username and password that the wizard has inserted (I just backspaced them out) then uncheck Required sign-in. And all should work from there.
Totally NON intuitive, when you un-tick the check box it removes details from screen, but still keeps it behind the scene.
