Captivate Battery Life...improvement?

Well, I opted for an early upgrade from ATT, and stopped using my Captivate. I had below average battery life (moderate usage, you tube videos, music, text and phone calls, web surfing, fantasy football), and would normally need to charge to and from work, keep phone shut off at work, and if I am at home, plan to charge by 3pm at the latest to be able to use the phone. It drained battery just sitting there.

I charged my Captivate up for the eventual selling of it, and have been surprised at what has happened. With no texting or calling, but it has been connected to wifi, and updating facebook and email, as normal, my battery life has gone literally thru the roof. It has been off the charger for almost 29 hours now, and I am at 68%.

Now, I am sure if I was using it more (I would call what I have done as very light usage in the last 29 hours), it would be down more, but I have NEVER gotten my battery to stay up this high for this long. I even refrained from using it before, and it still sucked the battery life out.

So, to sum up, just don't have any cell phone service for the Captivate, and the battery life is amazing!! LOL!!!!

Loved the phone, gonna miss it, but my power button has failed, and the constant power off screen popping up was too much.

I was religiously using the task manager to kill apps constantly, and clearing memory.

I had already rooted, and got rid of the bloatware, and I didn't do a custom rom or anything...still stock FROYO, and I have been leaving my phone sit, still updating email, facebook, etc, via wifi, but not being connected to the ATT Network since I moved my service to another phone.

I am at almost 72 hours of running this phone...and it is at 61%. I did pull the pictures I had off of it to preserve them, so it juiced it up a bit, but this phone is not using juice when not connected to cell service. Moderate usage via wifi, some youtubing.

I do text QUITE a bit, so maybe that was my mortal enemy....but from this being a phone that sucked the battery out in 4 hours of moderate to low use, to lasting 72 hours?

It will be interesting to see how long it lasts!!!

Its because your not using a network. You have no access to your provider, therefor the SIM isnt working. Pop your sim into it and see what happens. I am getting 3 days battery life after i upgraded to 2.3.x on Rogers Canada.

That is kind of the point. It has been connected to wifi for the pushes it normally would get. I totally agree that the battery life is directly due to not being on a network.

As I said, even with NO usage when I had it connected, a full day was impossible. I think once when I updated to Froyo I got a day. In the same area, my iphone does not eat thru battery like this thing did at all. And if it was the battery itself, since the iphone is new, it would not be holding up now not being on the network.

It's been up 118 hours and is at 37%

I charge my phone over night and turn it on in the morning. I will go home at night and have between 20-40% left usually. I forgot mine at home one morning and when I checked that night I was surprised to see it at 92%. As a matter of fact mine is currently at 86% because I left it in the car until 2:00 this afternoon. No usage but it was connected and I had several texts and voice mails waiting both times. So there has to be more to it than simply connected to the network that eats up the battery.

First off, Wifi is a local (under 200 yard) range unit. just the 1900 baseband is about a 10-40 kilometer range unit. Immagine how much your phone needs to work to process said information off the data network. Trust me, plug in your sim card, and watch your battery drain away. Ive done the same thing, i pulled my sim from my Iphone, and it lasts about 9-10 days (playing music via bluetooth as well....)

That being said, wifi will use ALOT less battery then your 1600/1900 freq over tower. Plug in your sim, and just watch.

i have a captivate that i use as a media player and or testing.. i can get tons of hrs on it.... constant use about 7 hrs.

its the same with my HTC EVO. if i am out and about and use it, i can get it easily to 50% by noon. weekends, when i am home and its on wifi, with same usage, i get 50% around 5pm. so it proves that cell signals are very ineficient and are the culprit of batteries on these phones

During the week, my battery usage pretty much sucks. If I tweet or text, I'll usually have to charge around 3pm (although I still have about 30% left). Inside my company we have AT&T repeaters, but they don't work real well. On the weekends (this is my first one with the Captivate), my battery use is a lot less (mainly because I'm busy doing stuff and I don't have time to text

).

3G definitely uses more juice than Wi-Fi, and I don't know that there's any real good way to extend battery life short of just not using the thing.
