Alright, I've had my d3 for quite some time now, its nice and all, but im kinda getting bored with it. Im not as tech savy and knowledgeable as most of you are, and im looking for helpful hints to add to my phone like hacks, diff things I can do that aren't stock, etc. I think u understand what im getting at. I don't know much about the technical side so be gentle on the terms. Lol

Firstly, you'll need to root the phone. Use the one click root method listed somewhere around here. Next install either ClockWork Mod Bootstrap and create a backup of your entire phone. **This is essential and is your means of recovery if SHTF.** Now, you can download and flash a ROM by installing a .zip from your SD card (int or ext, doesn't matter). For ROMs, there are quite a few out there. SteelDroid 3, Liyberty, Monster, and Dark Droid all run on your current software 5.6.890. I wouldn't try Maverick ROM as it's still in the beta phase and has some bugs. I'm personally a fan of Monster ROM. These are themed and will give your phone a whole new look, as well as better battery life and improved performance.

I'd say do some reading and go for it. It's practically impossible to turn the D3 into a paperweight now. :D

It is at this point, im not sure of anything you can do to brick it on purpose! (unless you get intothe more technical stuff like Radio Mods and things...)
Try reading about ROMs, there fairly easy to work with and the provide alot of personality for your phone! New themes, faster phone, new apps, new feel, better battery, and more!

The ROM threads floating around may be a little confusing, but youll get it pretty quick!

Don't mislead him... things like the TBH radio hack can give you an almost irreversible brick.

Doesn't flashing a new software version rewrite the radio anyways? When I flashed 5.7.894, I had to re-do the radio hack to get it to work again. So even if you borked the radio hack, couldn't you hypothetically flash 5.7.894 or 5.6.890 (depending upon which you came from) and rewrite the radio's decimal keys?

Anyways, at the moment, it's nearly impossible to kill this phone unless you mess up the radio hack. Other than that, with ROMs and themes and what not, you can always return it to stock and have a working phone in under 15 minutes.

Maybe if I'm feeling ballsy some day, I'll copy and paste my 8040 decimal code into a Word doc and save it as a backup. Then I'll go in and change the codes for my 8040-8043 signatures and then try to put them back with the backed up strings or by flashing over a different software version. And if I can't fix it, I'll restore it to stock look and take it back. Making it my 2nd return and 1 return closer to getting a GNex. ;)

SBF's are unable to affect radio strings... There may have been a change elsewhere that made you have to redo it, but an sbf should not fix the radio hack!

Well, applying 5.7.894 over 5.6.890 undid my radio hack and when I'd tether, it would bump me to the VZW buy the service screen. I re-did the hack and it works now. All I did was back up my 5.6.890 phone, restore to stock, flash 5.7.894, restore root, restore phone, then try to tether and fail. So I wiped data and cache, flashed MavROM over 5.7.894, restored, and re-did the radio hack.
