The iPhone period, anything with an Apple logo on it holds its value especially on ebay. I just sold my iPad 1 on ebay for more then you can buy it refurbished directly from Apple.

A year from now the Galaxy Nexus will be where the Nexus S is now, and nobody cares.

Basically, the stuff that actually matters works best on the an iPhone.

Being a little faster or having weather on your home screen... really, no one cares.

I'm really hoping the Galaxy Nexus gets the stuff that really matters right... and then also is able to use 4G. Otherwise, there's no point in getting a plastic phone when there is a much higher quality iPhone 4S out there.

That means I'll probably have to dish out at least $600 or more. I would like to apply the money I get from selling my next upgraded phone towards the purchase of the the IPhone 5 or the next best Android phone.

Based on the $299 selling price of both phones, what values do you think I can get for either one sometime next September?

The iPhone 4S easily.

It's a worldphone and can be unlocked to use on any carrier. It's also an iPhone, not a Samsung Nexus.

You just have to consider how much the devices are being subsidized for to determine worth. The $199 iPhone actually costs $649, so Verizon is paying Apple $450. The Galaxy Nexus 32gb is likely going to be $650 unsubsidized and will cost $299, so Verizon is only giving you an extra $350 worth.

x2. This is what most people who buy smartphones care about. Nexus phones are more for hardcore smartphone geeks who like to tinker. These geeks put up with less reliable stuff and drawbacks.

i could debate that all day in comparison to my international SGS2. 6mon old and it's never crashed, nor have i had to pull a battery. so that takes care of reliable. &what drawbacks not one that i'm aware of. in fact, iOS has more drawbacks because it's not open source. maybe you meant hardware drawback? nope, none there either...

so again, very debatable statement. depends on which Android device and OS it's running. hardly accurate because there are variables to consider

I agree completely...it sure is nice having the latest iOS running on my iPhone...but you have the latest iOS already, right? So, i got no argument...you win! Damn, i wish that Apple was open source so that i will always have the latest software on my phone running 100% reliable. Damn Apple!

I agree, but not with the functionality part.
In my experience with my friends who own iOS versus friends with Android devices, the dividing line is "coolness" (being a hipster) being most important for iOS versus "customization/functionality" for the Android crowd. I find that my college buddies that were either 1.) Artistic or 2.) obsessed with looking cool/seeming artistic are huge iOS fanboys, while my CIS majors and more practical friends usually start out flirting with the iOS devices, then buy Android. While it is true that there are some things iOS does better (natively), upon asking a lot of those people that have the devices they generally just regurgitate the functions listed in the commercials (or Instagram). When asked to do the things they just spouted off, they can't (because most of that functionality like controlling lights or Instagram require extra hardware and apps not already on the device). (Keep in mind this is an oversimplification, but so far I have found very few exceptions) My CIS/"nerdy"/Science major crowd friends generally use Android, and if I quiz them on some claim they have made about functionality the usual response is either "oh, huh, I thought it was there, let me tinker" or "let me ask someone about that (usually on XDA apparently), I'm sure I saw it," or "it's not really here, I was just trying to make the iOS guys mad..." Now I realize a big part of this is knowledge (especially the CIS guys) and caring to learn, but I still hold that this divide is 90% marketing.

Apple has been hugely successful at marketing their ecosystem to art departments (starting with the iMAC- I have one for this reason) because at the time they were "simpler" solutions, and put a lot of focus on graphics processing and handling. Especially in collegiate circles at liberal arts schools, who are the cool kids? Who appear in a lot of advertisements for new and "progressive" things (probably because the people designing/making the commercial come from that crowd)? Who are/were the "hipsters" originally? The artistic crowds, crowds who swear by Apple. See something enough and it becomes intriguing, intriguing things catch people at impressionable ages, who become missionaries, and as this movement (and its members) mature, it becomes "cool." I don't hate Apple or Steve Jobs, they were geniuses when they set this up years ago (now I hate their cut throat legal tactics, but that is because they are in an innovation slump right now, and have lost their idea person). I daresay that the Galaxy Nexus would be just as "functional" (free from error) as the iPhone if Google used such a hands-on approach and protected it as tightly as Apple does their devices.
Also imagine if iOS lost its "cool factor," if culture shifted and say, Nokia's foray with Windows Mobile goes viral and becomes the new cool thing. The "functionality" of iOS devices is still present, but I would bet their long-term value would drop sharply once the ads stopped...
For these reasons I believe the value-holding prospects of the iPhone/iPod/iPad series are mostly due to hype and (sub-)cultural expectations more so than actual functionality. As educated individuals (being on this forum shows that you 1.) know some things about technology, and 2.) care enough to learn more), we know/can find out the actual functionality/possibilities with each, but many of the "masses" do not. Maybe I've just become jaded, but that is the pattern and "truth" that I see.

And remind me, how did Apple come to be so popular or cool? Because it fails every 2-3 days requiring me to pull the battery (an actual recommendation by Sprint rep!)? Because it eats up battery life within hours if an app misbehaves or just a random phenomenon? Because it does weird things at times (landscape mode freeze, lagging response at random times)? Because the Market crashes or apps fail to download? Because some apps are pure spam or viral? Because no one outside of Google can get software updates in a timely manner? Etc.

Even that last part is BS...didn't Google say that Nexus S will get ICS within "weeks"? Geez, the rumor mill has it that i am looking at the early months of 2012.

Open source, you say? Geek or not, Google has a lot of things that needs to be fixed. Instead of launching all new software, maybe Google needs to fix what they did not on the old software! Make up your mind and stick with it...and fix what is broken...don't go back to the drawing board every few years! Stability. Reliability. It does not take a geek to realize the importance of that.

As for your generalization, i use to love Android until their products crap out on me, both hardware and software. Android was my first love...until it broke my heart. Apple was my backup plan...and it made me regret the time lost with my first love.

because ICS isn't on every single device yet? i see nothing wrong with that when there's a bazillion Android devices compared to only 3 different phones running iOS. when you throw tablets in the mix, there's even more. but no, you're right, having only two different phones is far better than having a choice of dozens and dozens of different phones to pick from to suit our needs, including full QWERTY phones for those who need a physical keyboard

sounds like you have had a bad experience with two Android phones that i never particularly liked. sorry to hear that, mate.

your statement about no one outside of Google can get timely updates is incorrect. my i9100 was getting updates from Samsung once a week for a very long time. now it's like once every two weeks or something.


anyway, back on topic of the thread, iPhones do hold their value more because most people just want something that "works" and is "easy to use" straight out of the box. i originally came to Android for the complexity of the OS in comparison. by complexity, i mean the ability to tweak substantially more. this turns a lot of people away from Android unfortunately. if just about anyone can use an iPhone, of course it holds it's value more. on top of the brand name, etc etc etc (i am actually not sure why someone would choose an iPhone over a top end Android device at this point. i owned a 3G and 3GS and ultimately hated them for their uniform design in general, and that 3.5" screen)

I think the biggest reason why people dislike Android and go with Apple (hence the higher resale value) is that for every Good Android Device there are 50 shitty ones that come out I mean look at some of these phones. A buddy of mine had a Iphone 3gs using it on Tmobile and it died on him so he went in and they talked him in to a Samsung Exhibit for $100 on a 2yr contract he hates it and he asked me to help him with it. As I'm looking at the phone I can't believe it's a newer phone and $100 it is a pile of junk . He now is looking to just buy another 3gs and go that route saying he'll never use Android again . And I don't blame him the phone he got was complete junk or how bout the Moto Cliq haha that phone is a joke

My biggest point is Android will always be consider the lesser because of these devices Ilike the option of choice but it blows that Android is on so many crappy phones

it's because operators feel they need to put Android on lower end devices at cheap prices to reach a price point that the masses can afford. this is certainly something Android should take from Apple... don't come out with crap devices. instead make high end ones and discount them after a year. the new Atrix is a good example. that's how it should be done right there.

The original SGS and its some variant like Nexus S4G, Charge was not so cool and had their share of issues. But SGSII is the one android phone that Samsung got very right in long time. Unfortunately it took too long to land in US and even then verizon passed on it. They passed on it for Gnex, but now they are dragging on its release with no hint on date driving many of us nuts. Obviously they favor Moto than any other phone makers.

I still maintain that Apple sits where it does because of strategic marketing of its ecosystem of "solutions." Launching the iMac, then the iPod with iTunes ("Syncs perfectly with my Mac" and it "Just works"), then the iPhone ("it can replace my iPod AND my phone" and "all my music is already in iTunes anyways" plus it really was groundbreaking in that it combined so many disjointed threads from other devices), then the iPad ("I already have a bunch of apps and music in my iTunes"), was just marketing/branding genius... The value is in the popularity, not the functionality.

To each their own, at least you made an educated decision about it, most people I know haven't. And that is my argument. Even so, I have been with Android since the G1 in 2009, and have not had anywhere near the plethora of problems (subjective or objective) you enumerate. If things look seedy, don't download them, and if apps misbehave, uninstall them/write to the developer. The device is yours, not Google's. Google's position is to innovate, not provide perfect products. Having played with both, and with a "Big Brother" an ever-present reality no matter which direction you take, I prefer a hands-off big brother...

As to the Nexus S though, I would expect it within about 4 weeks of the official US (Verizon) launch of the Galaxy Nexus (within ~5 weeks?). Remember that the device "launched" only two weeks ago in the UK.

I agree that "affordable (cheap) solutions" are a terrible marketing idea (thank you OEMs and Carriers- and I think this was the original reason for the Nexus line), but we really don't have the hype iOS devices have. I really think it is partially still spill over from the Windows v. Apple / PC v. Mac days- it is the hipster and cool thing to be "rebellious" and not support evil major corporations like Windows (ignoring of course that Apple is bigger- and Google too!).

Exactly a phone like the Incredible or EVO or great devices still. I have an incredible I keep for a backup and I just got a EVO 2 months ago as a replacment for my BB 8330 work phone and it's a great device and they gave it to me for free with a $25 Visa GC . I'll take an EVO a phone that came out in early 2010 ?? over some of these crap devices that are being released in the $50-$150 range

And really when you're talking about a 2yr commitment to a device what's the difference between $199 and $99 over two years. $2.40 a month . Hell Verizon sell Re-manufactured Thunderbolts and Revolutions for under $50 . Why mess with all that other crap

I get so many people telling me they hate Android or usually they say Droids then to find out they have a $50 Cricket Android Device well of course it sucks . I'd take a iPhone 2g over some of these devices

The reason that the iPhones hold resale so much better is not because it's any better or appeals more to more people, it's because there's only one of them released every year, therefore its tech ages a lot slower (relatively) than the Android phones do since there's a new flagship Android phone about every other month. With the high turnover rate of phones in the Android market, it depreciates the phones they're replacing that much faster.

For example; look at the Bionic and Droid 3. Their successors came out 2-4 months after their launch, so obviously that's going to drive their re-sale value down a lot. But it's the same thing even when you're not comparing phones from the same manufacturer. When the quad-core phones launch around Q2 next year, it's going to drop the re-sale of the Nexus and today's high-end Android devices considerably.

i vowed to never wait on a carrier to release a phone here in the states when the SGS2 dropped overseas. a lot of the Android fragmentation is because of the carriers. they are why both phones and updates are delayed so heavily. i despise carriers.
