For photo comparison, here is a shot taken last night at a bar with my RAZR versus an OG Droid. Edit: these are not the original images, rather saved as lower resolution jpgs, I just wanted to show you the light differences between the two.

Both shot in "auto" settings just open the camera apps and snap? Or did you manually change any settings?

For some, the "auto mode" (those who don't know or care to know photography) is going to be crucial.

For others, a few tweaks to the settings and knowledge of lighting, F/stop, shutter speed, WB, and handheld techniques can and will make for a world of difference in the quality of shots.

Jumping out from the darkness with my sad story.
GNEX to be my first smartphone..limping along with dysfunctional LG Chocolate.
Been due for upgrade since August. Jumped in to get grandfathered for unlimited in July. Using zilch but thought it would be a good move in the end.
Pass a hankie please.

Great Forum..thanks

Thank you for joining us welcome here ;)

F/2.8 IS fast for a 50mm though. F/2.8 is fast for any lens. It's much more pricey to get a faster lens on a longer zoom and on a 300mm lens it'll cost ya an arm and a leg :D

I think I know what you mean to say when you state "the wider your lens gets the larger your aperature has to be to get the same affect" but I don't understand your wording.

Anyway, the whole photography thing is a complete other topic in and of itself right!

Indeed...f/2.8 is fast in any lens.

LG Chocolate? I thought those where all upgraded to Droid Incredibles back in the day... I just remember a lot of people switched from the chocolate to an Incredible back when waiting for the Dinc!

At this point, if you REALLY care about photography, you'll just go ahead and get a DSLR with a 1.4 prime, f/2.8 18-55, and 70-300. I sure do enjoy my T3i :). That being said, I don't think anyone is going to be taking wedding photos to be put in an album with this phone.

Um, no. f2.8 on a 50mm is a dog. f1.0 1.2 or 1.4 is fast 1.8 is pretty good and will cost you less than $100 new or about $60 used. A 1.4 is about $300-400. I'm talking about Canon EF lenses. If you have an SLR do yourself a favor and pickup a "nifty fifty f1.8 used" for little money and enjoy your new found bokeh. You'll thank me later.:D

I will drop the issue. But f2.8 on a 50mm is not a fast lens. And that is all I have to say about that.

Auto, it was a quick grab of the phones out of my purse before we left.

I know I'm being a downer but we still have no official word on anything yet. People are getting worked up about 12/8 and still nothing. A friend of mine works in a VW store and this person has not heard anything, either. The manager of this store has heard nothing as well. I'm supposed to get a call or text on anything related to the GN so I will keep everyone posted if I hear anything.

A buddy of mine is a manager at an authorized retailer, and for most big releases A) they only get a phone or two and B) he said they just "show up" on launch day. He comes in and boom, there's the phone. I'm really not surprised that we haven't heard anything from the stores, other than that one mention of the phone showing up in a Cellebrite system. I'm not letting that get me down.

I think this is a little exaggerated, depending on the lens an f2.8 is sure not a dog at 50mm. Yes, compared to primes at 1.0/1.2 for twice the price and absolutely no versatility in zoom length. But for 99.999% of the world, I am sure f/2.8 for all zoom ranges will do just fine.

Correct about the super important hang-on-the-wall photos BUT most of the cute pictures I have of the kids/family/cats are taken impromptu with my smartphone, and these are my favorite pictures to share or put in albums, so I need good quality pics from my phone. I don't know when I'll be taking that pic while we're out so I don't lug around my Canon EOS all the time.

Do you know if the stock camera app on the SGN has these settings? If not, do you know of another app that does?

Sorry if my last post didn't give any new info. That is because there isn't any. Just trying to keep people from getting into these rumors of release anytime sooner than already stated.

Now on another note, this sure is an epic pre-release thread. The three pre-release threads for the A855 probably totalled only about 7-8000 posts, but about 750k views. It was much more heavily moderated, with no off topic allowed; lots of bans and deletions. This thread has many more posts per views. Great thread.

I couldn't agree more, all I am saying is I think some of the "apertures vs quality" conversation were having here are a little exaggerated.

Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns mentions a kryptonite bullet. Also in the animated movie New Frontier he mentions it to the Martian Manhunter.

Yes, but Frank Miller's Dark Knight books and the animated movies (nor even the New Frontier graphic novels) are considered canon to the mainstream DC Universe. Those fall under the Hypertime/Mulitverse umbrella and aren't in the mainstream history. I've been reading this stuff for the past 30 years and just sold 47 boxes of my comics. Longtime DC/Marvel/Valiant/Image/Dark Horse/etc fan, hence my avatar. :D I love the animated movies, but they alter a number of things from the comic. But the Dark Knight and Dark Knight Returns will always be two of the best. Frank Miller's short recent (but way too short) All Star Batman & Robin series was excellent as well, featuring great moments like this:

I have the Nikon nifty fifty 50mil it was super cheap and is a fantastic lens at F/1.8 and the bokeh is buttery, but F/2.8 is a still considered a fast lens. Just not by you.. ;)
