Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

i know this isnt related but where do i update my gingerbread rom?

If you're looking to flash a different ROM, you can start by looking here. If flashing isn't something you're completely comfortable with yet, I recommend you read the "After Rooting" section of this guide and focus on the "Flashing Guide" included.

Ive done all steps. I read a post indicating that I did not need to have internt access to dl cwm through revolutionary prompt . Instead I dl cwm from android market But still unable to root. Could this be the problem?

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cwm im guessing you mean clockwork mod. that is a recovery and you will need it after you gain root with revolutionary first. so i do not think that is the issue. what is happening when you run revolutionary? give us some more detail and then we can help you out.

Ok. I was able to resolve my issue. At Hboot screen after updating recovery, I was rebooting device instead of returing back to Hboot and clicking the 'Recovery' option. Which then took me to the ASR screen so that I could run the 'Flash zip from sd card'. Thanks!

Ive already backed up nanroid but didnt choose the 'wimax' option. If I go and back up the nandroid again and include the wimax, will it backup the previous 3 options plus wimax thusly using more space? Or will it just save the wimax with the previous backup (using space adding wimax)?

By default will backup the 3 you're referring to, if you add Wimax, yes, it will take more space. If you're concerned about space, I recommend creating a nand w/ Wimax and just deleting the backup you did prior.

How do I delete previous nandroid backup? And do I create new nandroid using the same steps as backing up nandroid? (adding the wimax the 2nd time around of course) grattitude in advance guys

Using a file explorer app such as ES File Explorer, Astro, Root Explorer (a paid app but completely worth it and is also my favorite) go to a folder named "Clockworkmod" or something similar to that, and you can delete your nandroids from there.

The steps you took to create a nandroid the first time around will be the same every time you create one.

After I flashed superwipe I got denied trying to flash the ROM I would like to use. I then restored previous ROM from nandroid restore

Install from sdcard
Finding update package
Opening update package
E:cant open /sdcard/RUU_Runnymede_HTC_Europe_1.05.401.4_R2_Radio_20.5101.30.0822_3822.10.10.12_M_Release_223366_signed.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted

Do I not have the right recovery to flash this ROM?

Using amon ra 2.3

I found it in the link that is provided in the general rom, kernels, themes and more link that is provided in the guide for dummies guide

ok whatever you do do not flash this again. luckily this is a ruu of the stock unrooted rom for the sensation and it is not flashable in recovery. virus linked it because the base for his rom was off of this ruu. he was just giving credit where it is due.

his setup is a little comfusing to get to the rom. but here is his nightly:Directory listing for www.androidfilehost.com/main/EVO_4G_Developers/Virus/Eternity/Buildbox/

you will want to download the 288mb version

When I saw that file I almost crapped my pants! Really lucky it was a ruu and not a flashable!

yep that is a sure way of bricking your phone. so just make sure that you know what you are flashing beforehand. flashing roms meant for other phones will brick it.

Yea, crazy. I read the OP and the first couple pages of that thread and never saw any mention of anything. Nice catch OC. I found it odd that the picture in the OP was for the 3d but yet that was in the 4g section.
