At this point without actually experiencing ICS the ONLY thing that bothers me is the DEDICATED search bar at the top of EVERY single home screen...I'm a minimalist and would like this on one screen at most...P3 already has a patch to remove it...rooting is the only to remove it at this point!

There's a video here from the weekend showing how to remove that without root. ;)

I used superoneclick to root my og droid but don't remember having to do any extra steps and unlocking the bootloader...however, I obviously have a custom ROM flashed since I'm using CyanogenMod 7.1...so again sorry to be asking the same question again but why is unlocking the bootloader necessary?

IIRC, the D1 did not have a locked bootloader, so this wouldn't be necessary. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

@EarlyMon

Did you ever watch that show Breaking Bad? Didn't they film that show somewhat close to where you live?

It's made in Albuquerque, I know people there, including people who work on the show. The subject matter doesn't interest me, so I don't watch it. Probably frustrating to fans because I could probably swing a pass for some of production work - but won't.

Sorry.

All bootloaders are "locked" by default but this term is used loosely like "swiping to unlock phone". Not all bootloaders are encrypted though. Example is Moto encrypts their bootloaders.

I believe your superoneclick also unlocked your bootloader because it is a very short process through ADB if the bootloader is not encrypted.

To Root or not to Root?

My thoughts?

The quick answer: Root AND unlock it.

The longer answer: this is a developer device. It is ment to be tinkered with. Rooting and ulocking the bootloader is SAFE just as long as you are responsable. Meaning don't tinker with the file system unless you know what you are doing as well as not looking for paid apps for free. If you stick with legit markets like the android market and amazon and watch the permissions you should be fine.

I waited for a month or so before I unlocked my Xoom and had to redo everything. What a pain.

Unlock and root that bad boy as soon as you get it even if you don't intend to do anything with it. After you get more comfortable with your device or it starts to show its age or you get board, you are ready to take your device to the next level. :D

and here i thought i was following this thread religously...can you post a link or at least about what time and day that was posted because i apparently missed it...thanx

I think it was Saturday night. Wilfred B posted a lot of good info in the same time frame. Start with his posts from then, and go from there.

I wish now I enforced suggestions that the better vids go into the video thread - oh well.

Go to the Statistics tab, then scan his thanked posts in this thread, best I can suggest.

That's what it looked like to me too...not down with that...i'd still like to use the app and have the widget on 1 out of the 5 screens...but seeing it on EVERY screen will drive me NUTTY!!!

I don't like it on every screen much either, but I do remember reading somewhere that its not actually taking up space that can be used for normal widgets. If true I will just leave it alone.

I will be rooting just because I can.. as a long time linux user even if i never do anything that would require me to have root on the device however unlikely I just wouldn't feel right about having a linux device I don't have root access to.

kicked back here tonight because of a battlelog update..

im gonna leave it there...to me, makes sense practically and aesthetically . practically, because it replaces the search capacitive button. aesthetically, it will look weird having an empty space atop each screen, given you can't replace the bar with an app/widget.

all of this applies if you're going to stick to stock ICS...which i will initially

In the Nexus case, you have to unlock the bootloader in order to root it.

Unless that changes, rooting a Nexus will wipe it, by virtue of the bootloader unlock.

On the Nexus, to install Superuser.apk, you need to set the /system to read/write, to do that, you need run a boot image that lets you, to do that, you need to unlock the bootloader. That's how rooting a Nexus leads to a wipe on unlock.

A Nexus roots without nonsense and tricks.

What kinda other goodies, Mon? I'm making a list.:D;)

I forgot to mention fonts installation. Search the Market for root and root apps - lots of interesting goodies. :)

Ninja'd on the video - ninja'd on this as well??
