I'm taking donations....

Well, enterprises that use a lot of water have to pay. Consumers do not.

I really don't know why we don't pay according to usage. How do they even know how much water someone uses? Maybe it would require modifications to the system and that would cost too much.

I have installed many a water line, including service lines into homes and businesses. There is a meter that spins an impeller which in turn clicks a little counter to measure the water usage. The meters have a readable (or scan-able) readout that tells usage, usually measured in thousands of gallons. The only way municipalities measure sewer usage is by the water measurement. They assume that every gallon in equals one gallon out. The meters are rather expensive, but simple to install. I think they cost around $400 USD (last I knew.)

If you use city water, then yes. My parents are on a well so they don't pay for it but their electric bill is slightly more because of it but still wouldn't compare to a water bill. I pay roughly $60ish for 2 months water/sewage

Is there any gas/oil drilling in your area? I've heard that people that use well water have been able to light their water out of the tap on fire. Gives new meaning to the phrase "Well Done" I guess....

Beat me to it. The local municipality recently went to wireless meters that meter readers can drive by your house and get a reading without leaving their car. Strangely enough some of the local home owners HATE the wireless meters because they consider it a privacy issue (WTF???) or they claim the reading transmitted wireless is completely different than the one on the actual device. The water department claims this isn't true and I've not seen any evidence that indicates they're wrong. Others think that if the meter can't be read they get free water (again wtf??) The home owners go out and break the antennas off the meters which just means the meter reader has to walk to the meter and read it. Then the home owner is ticketed for vandalizing city property and is billed for the cost of replacing the meter on top of that.

Here in the States there are people who's job is just to read/record meter readings. Job pays about $10 an hour around here.

Big Brother is reading your water usage..... o_O Believe me, I have seen my share of crazy homeowners. The company I worked for did water main installs. You don't know irate until you dig across someone's driveway six feet deep and four feet across. Right before they have to leave for work.

Update on my situation, logged into my account the other day and it's now showing $40.00 for last month. I guess they decided not to charge me by the pound for all the "waste" I have been generating. :D

Oh and Rico, thanks for the donation and even though I won't need it anymore, I won't be refunding it to you since I still had to listen to your sample CD of "Rico's all-accordion AC/DC tribute band" that you're submitting to that record exec.

When my sister and I were kids (probably 9-10 at the time), we got on a plane one time and found one of these in the seat pocket. It hadn't been tossed out from the previous flight I guess. We were both absolutely fascinated by it and wouldn't put it down. Read that thing like twice during the flight and ate up every word. My mother was horrified.
