GTA III coming to Android!

sorry I'm not an expert when it comes to hardware but I understand that the ps2's cpu is way lower than 500mhz and gpu's at 150mhz, and it can flawlessly run gta 3 (and even better, san andreas)
but here in this android port dual core mobiles are being required for it to run? (not to mention android phones of today even the middle-range has a decent gpu)
isn't a 1ghz android phone(evo 4g) more than sufficient to run it?

While what is said above is true (certain architectures are better at computing certain things even at a lower clock speed), you need to remember the following. For Android (or PC for that matter), game makers need to make the game compatible for tons of different configurations. With a console, they ONLY need to optimize for that specific configuration. Developers learn what the console does best, and optimize appropriately. They don't have to worry about 60 different phones (or even 10-20 CPU architectures), they just focus on 1 set of hardware.

This leads us to emulation. Sure the processor is faster, but it has to "emulate" the processor of the console in software. So essentially, it has to create a processor and graphics card (among other things) in software. This takes a huge chunk of the phone processor's time. Then, it also has to run the game (also using the phone's processor).

Honestly, I'm amazed at what they have been able to do so far!

Tegra devices mostly to start with it seems, lets hope they expand support or it works with chainfire.

I love how their list of supported devices changed...

Old phone list:
Droid X2, HTC Evo 2 [3D], LG Optimus 2X, Motorola Atrix, Samsung Galaxy S2

New one:
HTC Rezound, LG Optimus 2x, Motorola Atrix 4G, Motorola Droid X2, Motorola Photon 4G, Samsung Galaxy R, T-Mobile G2x

I don't understand why they would drop the EVO 3D and add the Rezound when the hardware is exactly the same. They never even listed the Sensation, which is also pretty much the same but with less RAM.

Yeah, I really don't like that new Google feature as many devs don't update their list when new devices than can run the game come out, making owning a new device on Android an issue aka fragmentation.

Ya, it's pretty lame. They need to make it so it automatically adds new devices, and if there's a chance the new device doesn't work the reviews will hopefully get the developer into action.

That's I think devs should just develop for SoC instead of specific devices. I don't see a single reason why GTA 3 can run on a the Rezound's Snapdragon S3 but not other S3 devices.

Or just design them around the Galaxy S II and all devices capable will be able to run it, Mali 400 only supports the one compressed texture format as it's a requirement, it's a little more memory intensive but all devices should be compatible.

Only reason to use different texture formats is for devices with limited memory.

The port was announced in October 2011, and Rockstar originally announced that the game will support for Samsung Galaxy S II at launch, however, due to "technical differences with the Galaxy S2 that make the development process a special case [but] still working on it", the port will be released for Galaxy S2 at a later date

Nice, I wonder how much nvidia are paying them for this?
