Mods: I'm not exactly sure if this is the correct forum. Please feel free to move it if necessary.

I've searched around and found threads complaining about the amount of data usage, but not truly CONSTANT data IO...

My phone: HTC Thunderbolt, Verizon, unlimited data plan, unrooted, stock ROM, OTA update to Gingerbread about a week ago.

I noticed yesterday that the 4G upload and download icons were both on constantly, like 24/7. I swapped batteries 3 times yesterday. My 1700 mAh lasted about 3 hours.

I've checked all my apps, and there is SOME updating, but nothing that would lead to constant IO.

I tried killing apps that send/receive data. I don't have any backups, syncing, downloading or updating running. I check for malware with Lookout Free, Antivirus Free, and Kinetoo. Nothing.

I don't know if this in an HTC issue, just Thunderbolt, Gingerbread, Verizon, or maybe just me.

Has anyone heard of this? Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks!

All I can think of is that there's one or more of you apps that are constantly updating, even after you kill them, could try deleting some of the apps that you think might be causing this, ruling the ones out that are causing this if that's the case, also if you have mobile data always on you could turn that off and see if that helps. Also toggle data itself off when not in use will help with battery life if you can stand your apps not auto syncing all the time. And in my opinion there's only need for one virus protector app if you want any at all.

@tbzj7: Interesting I hadn't thought of that. It only been in the last few days. I have DL-ed some new apps. I'll delete those one by one. If I find anything, I'll report back. One of the things I like about a smart phone is always having a data connection. 4G eats batteries, but I'm ok as long as I get a day out of a charge.

@Ibrick: Downloading Spare Parts (by Android Apps) as we speak...or...type... If I turn up anything, I'll let you know.

Thanks all! Keep 'em coming!

Ok! I got it! It was K9-Mail. I Networking/Backgroud Syncing is set to anything but Never, I get constant data IO. Other otpions are Always, and then 2 that are contingent on background and auto-sync Android settings. I set Update Frequency in all my mailboxes to 5 minutes first, then 2 hours. Still get constant IO. So it's not actually syncing. I can't figure out what it's sending. I'll send the dev a bug report.

I downloaded K9-Mail Data Killer. Just before reading, I turn it off so it K9 syncs on launch (avoid digging into settings to do this) . I can't get notifications when an email comes in.

After a manual search if the Issues list on K9's Google Code site I found this problem listed. Issue #3678.
