Help overheating

What do you think about the heat issues and the case with the battery space cut out? Do you think streaming in Normal mode (3G and using 40% brightness) instead of High Performance (4G and max brightness) would be better for not building up as much heat? Or just go without a case when I stream media?

I would not use a case except to carry it around in, but you must not be afraid of people laughing at you like me and my belt loop case ;)

The Rezound gets pretty hot. I posted a Razr heat scale on that forum and the Razr gets nowhere near those temps. The Angry Birds temp seems really high (too high- correct?). I did not test AB, but did test Flash again with 4G on the Rezound and it does bust the 120 degree point.

Still, due to the design of the Rezound, the same feeling of heat compared to the Razr seems less, but is equal or more. Razr pipes it and you feel some of it. The Rezound blocks it, but maybe too good.

Seems like the Rez should be throttled to about 1.2ghz to help ease the warmth, but folks also report no issues. Some bad units perhaps?

Well, the 6 degree spike from playing Angry Birds doesn't see too out of the ordinary. However, I still find the spike in temp from watching 30 minutes of netflix pretty substantial. Like I said, I got nowhere near that kind of spike doing the same test. Have you tried the same test without the case on the phone for comparison?

Were the videos from Netflix in 720p? I can imagine the phone getting extremely hot with all that data being processed on its screen. With my new found 4G in the house, I'm tempted to get Netflix just to stream all that data, and I'm sure my phone would get nice and toasty.

I just ran another 30 minute netflix test over 4G. This time I did it from home in queens. The one I did this morning from from work in Manhattan. Anyway, the temp at start was 25.7C (78.3F) and after the 30 minute test it was 41.9C (107.4F). This was roughly 6 degrees worse than the test I did at work this morning -- a spike of 29.1 degrees versus 22.8 degrees.

However, I don't think my 4G signal was as strong since I noticed the frame rate would skip pretty often unlike my first test where playback was smooth. Also, I had the speaker volume at max (something I could not do at work for obvious reasons). So those things may have contributed to the higher spike. Anyhow, I don't find either test results alarming so I'm not going to worry anymore about heat issues.

It sucks that other people are having these heat issues though. It seems to be miring what otherwise is a great phone for them.

And to answer your question TxGoat, I just streamed in standard def. I don't think netflix offers HD streaming in its android app yet (or at least I don't know where to find HD content on it if they do).

Someone told me that Verizon's "Watch" streams in HD. The only problem is that they're about a $3.99 for just a rental of older movies. Seems kind of pricey.

I plan on doing same test tomorrow without otterbox case. And if enough time with my wifes Verizon gel case she got.

Her rezound comes tomorrow. Might do side by side too.

I actually just saw what an otterbox case for the rezound looks like. Wow, that's one thick case. I could definitely see how that could result in heat build up. Just think about wearing a suit made of rubber like that. I'd sweat like a frickin' piggy.

HELP!! Overheating problem when I stream Tunein Radio. Phone got very hot yesterday. How.where are you guys getting the battery temperature.
I might have fried something. Today I took the phone off the charger about 9:00 am and by 1:00 my battery was dead. I was stuck (still am) in 1X mode???
I took the phone back to Verizon Auth. dealer where I bought it. They think I have a bad sim card andwill replace it Friday when They get them in.
Should I tell them to just replace the phone. I am within 14 day window.

I use battery solo widget or spare parts plus.

I had a big problem today, with it overheating. I made a call on the phone, shortly after taking it off the charger. After my call, I put the phone in my pocket and it started getting hot, very hot.

I brought the screen to life and noticed that it looked as though it was stuck on "1X", so I powered the phone off completely. The phone stayed hot, the entire time I was in a meeting (over an hour). After my meeting, I pulled it out of my pocket, hit the power button to turn it on and it was completely dead. Threw it on the charger and it started to charge, so even though the phone was powered off, something in the phone caused it to completely drain the battery down to nothing.

I called VZW and they are sending me a "Certified Like New" replacement phone- should have it tomorrow- this ought to be exciting- I wonder what will be wrong with the one I get from Fedex tomorrow...

Naked, 45 minutes of netflix over 4g brightness at full my battery got up to 109. Hottest phone I've owned. I know heat kills battery efficiency, I'm not sure what to make of it. Haven't had any problems with it though.

109F is nothing to be concerned about, especially after such heavy 4g use. The hottest my phone has ever gotten is 45.1C (113.2F), also while streaming netflix (though for an hour). It was the last heat test I conducted. Felt no need to do anymore since 113F is not anywhere near danger zone. Interesting, I tried to stress the battery even more by playing angry birds for 20 minutes right after streaming netflix. My temp actually FELL to 44.3C (111.7F). Btw, this was with the high-gloss silicone case on.

If the phone was less than 30 days old, I think you could have insisted on new phone.

I did that once already- the first Rezound I took back had a bad LCD screen- when you hit the power button, you didn't get an image of the home screen or lock screen on it- instead, the entire LCD screen lit up a blueish/purplish color, with a solid white line down the middle- had to keep hitting the power button in order to get it back to the normal screen.

My 2nd one got so hot on a number of occasions that it drained the battery down to nothing, so tech support sent me out a "Certified Like New" phone, that I got today- wondering how long it will last before not working...

Just out of pure curiousity, how is everyone finding out the battery temp on your phone???- I'd really like to know.

I've found the best way to cool off a phone is to power it off, remove the back cover and remove the battery. Put all pieces on a desk or some other item that can either disperse the heat or allow airflow.

Yes I find it concerning ive never had an overheating problem other than the two times but this time it was bad enough i was very scared that my note may not turn on it did it while i was asleep i happened to wake up and grab it and my phone was damn near fire starting hot i rushed it to the kitchen where i put a hot pocket box in the freezer on the back after i stripped the otter box in a blind fury lol its fine but really im getting rid of this defender its not worth losing a dang near $600 phone to heat damage

Welcome to the forums!

Your Samsung Galaxy Note definitely needs some sort of thorough look.

I've used Otterboxes for years, they don't lead to that level of heat in my experience.

Which Note do you have?

I'd like to move this to a new discussion in the right Note forum where you can chat with other users of the same model as yours.
