Help Galaxy Nexus clicking noise?

So I got my Galaxy Nexus yesterday. When I was using it in a quiet room, I noticed it's making a clicking noise. It makes a single click about 3 seconds after the last action. So - you press a button, wait 3 seconds and it emits a click. It's then quiet until you make another entry.

It's quiet enough that you don't hear it until you're in a quiet room. After a couple of hours using it and noticing it, it was driving me crazy. I thought it might be a background app, so I did a factory reset. It still happened, even when used the device without logging in with my google account.

I contacted Phones4u, and they swapped the phone over this morning. However, the new phone has exactly the same problem.

Anyone else hearing this click?

p.s. This is actually my third handset now... The first one had a dodgy proximity sensor, so it would intermittently turn the screen back on while it was against my face. The very first call I made hung up four times...

Contact the company you got it from, and return it. Perhaps, they'll give you a refund? :eek:

I've already returned it once. I don't want a refund - I can live with it... but it's annoying...

Does it do it only when the screen times out or turns back on?

Nope, it still clicks with the screen on. It makes the noise about 3 seconds after the last action.

Have you gone into the sound settings and turned off anything that could create the sound? Things like audible selection and screen lock sounds in particular?

Hey I been looking everywhere for this problem, I also got the phone from Phones4U (launch event) and i got it replaced yesterday, but the same thing happened. Its coming from the speaker, its driving me crazy! i made a thread on it too..considering going to replace for the third time!

Well it looks like it's a software think rather than hardware. I'm sure an update will sort it out soon.

To be honest it's not a big problem... It's almost inaudible - you can only hear it in a really quiet room. When I took it back to the shop and tried to demonstrate the problem, the background noise meant you couldn't hear it.

Yes! I noticed this too and was wondering was it a bug or strange feature. Glad to see that I'm not the only one who noticed it. And yes, IT'S ANNOYING... but the kind of thing that you'd almost not report for fear of being branded some sort of OCD weirdo.. or Steve Jobs.

My guess is that it's an audio artifact caused by a thread closing and audio stream (causing a sudden discontinuity in audio DAC levels).

This is VERY ANNOYING and I hope this can be fixed via a software update ... is there already a google bug report open concerning this problem?

Bump. This doesn't seem to negatively affect the device, but it is nonetheless aggravating.

Has anyone who has experienced the clicking noise echo received the OTA 2G volume patch? If so, is the clicking still present?

This is definitely a software issue. I just replicated it (but damn, you guys have great ears, I had to hold the phone right next to mine to hear it)

Turning off touch sounds fixed it for me. My theory is that the little click is when the system disengages the audio device (shortly after playing the click sound).

I find that it happens a lot in media devices too, especially easy to hear with nice IEMs, a few seconds after a song finishes playing, you can hear the hiss then a click as the audio output is shut off.

Also curious if the update fixed it, but I highly doubt it, as I don't think Google is even aware of this "issue"

I'll answer my own question if anyone's interested. I just received the update - no changes. The infernal click echo remains.

Turn your GN over and push the back cover, on the "Google" logo (below the camera flash). Then quickly release your finger....

.... is that the clicking sound your getting, coz that's what my one does

Sometime it can happen with only the lightest of touches. I reckon that's what your hearing. It's quite annoying, as it happens quite often just in general use. Mines only 2 days old

BTW I'm on O2 and only once has the volume jumped down.

Mine (and others on this thread) is definitely software related. It is most evident when I press either the back, home or multitasking button; the phone registers the press and responds with an audible "click" - this is as it should be. Three seconds later, though, a second click can be heard emanating from the speakers.

Your issue sounds like either loose tolerances from the assembly line or your battery cover isn't fully seated.

Wow this phone sounds like a POS. For how little there are out there there sure are a lot of bugs. I am really starting to get tempted to go over to the fruit tree.

I've had a seemingly endless amount of Android handsets (HTC Magic, Droid, Nexus One, Hero, Droid X, Evo, Nexus S, Galaxy S II, I might be missing one or two others). I've always - albeit reluctantly - switched back to the iPhone for its polish and ease of use, particularly when jailbroken.

In spite of its idiosyncrasies, I haven't considered switching my SIM out to my iPhone 4 after putting it into my GN. It's clearly the best Android device I've used to date. Part of that can be attributed to the software - ICS is significantly more polished than previous iterations of the OS. Part of it is hardware, though, too - the GN's screen is the best I've used on an Android handset and misses the iPhone 4's resolution by just a shade.

IMHO, if you're an Android fan, the little bugs here and there shouldn't dissuade you from considering the GN. It's that good.

Back to the original topic, I agree with Fabolous. This appears to be a software issue. I assume, then, that it can be easily remedied.

Have you tried disabling the touch sounds?

Go to Settings > Sound and uncheck 'Touch Sounds'.

This solved the issue for me. Hopefully it works for you too....

I don't know if I'm losing my mind, but my phone makes soft popping noises. Very slight -- sounds like it is coming from the earpiece speaker, but it happens even when I'm just navigating around the phone. It usually coincides with when the haptic response fires (e.g., hitting "back"), but occasionally, it will just pop even when I'm doing nothing.

Also, I noticed that when on a phone call, the speaker would cut in and out. But, I think this is a separate issue altogether. I'll withhold conclusions on this until I test further.

yep, the popping is there. when you press a key its supposed to make a tiny sound. i occasionally get a slight pop.
