***Official G-Nex first impressions thread*** Love it? Hate it?

Get Google Voice. It's free, gives you a second free number that you can use with your phone, and you can set up your regular voicemail to go to it also.

The only complain I have is the transcript feature is pretty inaccurate, but otherwise no complaints.

Do you need a Google number before you use it or do you get the number after launching the app? I keep trying it but cannot get past where it is trying to verify my number.

Initial review (Subject to change over the next few days. Doing some traveling, so we'll really test it. Also, there is no LTE in my area. That will factor in a bunch this weekend when I head to one of the better LTE coverage areas in the south):

Loves:
-Ice Cream Sandwich! Simply amazing. This is what Android should have been all along.
-Snappy processor. I'm coming from an OG Droid on its last legs, so that may have something to do with it, but this thing feels blazing fast.
-Large screen.
-Overall feel of the phone. From the textured back, to the weight, to the slight curvature. Feels great in my hand.

Likes:
-Camera. Loads quickly, snaps pics very quickly, great new features, but I expected a tad more out of low light performance. Still GREAT for a smartphone.
-Call quality. Everything sounds crystal clear on this thing, eventhough I'm only in 3G areas so far. The only knock I have that brings this into the likes category is the volume is rather low. I don't know if it's just me and I haven't adjusted the placement of the phone to my ear yet or if it just is genuinely a tad soft. Coming from an OG, it could have a little to do with phone placement, I did notice yesterday that my first call I had the speaker way up toward the top of my ear instead of lining up with my ear canal.

Dislikes(nit picky stuff):
-LED notification light is a bit wonky. Shows up for a bit but stops after a while. Light blinks on then back off too quickly and then has too long of a delay till the next time it comes on. Easily missed if you glance at your phone. Also don't like that I can't customize the colors (maybe I haven't found it yet). I know I can and have for Handcent, but native apps seem to be lacking in the option.
-Volume rocker placement is just....odd...or maybe it's the power button placement? Anyway, the combination of where these two are just seems odd to me. I'll get use to that, no big deal.
-Screen banding on white/greys. Also, not a big deal, but it's there.
-Facebook syncing with contacts is gone. I understand this is a pissing contest between Google and Facebook though? Correct me if I'm wrong on that one.
-Also seems like some apps that I had just purchased in the 10 cent sale don't show up in the market..notably Need For Speed Shift.

Overall, I like the phone. There were a few more nitpicky things that I have forgotten at the moment, but I'm sure those will be fixed as time goes on. Wasn't going to root, but it looks like I might, partially because I forgot Titanium backup required root. Backed up some of my game progress from my OG and now have no way to restore it without root. I did expect a little better out of the screen and especially the reception. The screen is not a big deal as it is still amazing. The reception...well, I'll give it a little longer before I make a final judgement on that.

UPDATE:
Took a day trip to Nashville, TN this weekend and they have excellent LTE coverage (at least it appears so to me, I don't have LTE at my house so...). On to the update. LTE Is BLAZING on this phone. I'm at work so I can't upload screenshots, but I ran two speed tests at different times of the day and got 40Mbps in the AM and 31 Mbps in the afternoon. I was shocked! Can't wait for LTE in my area! Battery life was very good as well. I made it 15 hours off of the charger and was at 10% when I returned home. Activities included snapping pics, 30+ minutes of GPS navigation, checking e-mails, facebook, twitter, google+, uploading photos to Google+, taking video, etc. I would say it was a moderate use day. I consider that really good battery life.

Removed my Hates section because the only hate was the apparent signal strength. However, after further use, I have come to the conclusion Motorola lied about signal strength. I have no bars on the Nexus and get MUCH better clarity and quality of calls through than I ever could on my Motorola here at work. I would see 4-5 bars on my Droid and then pick the phone up and it wouldn't even go through or it would and drop within 30 seconds and one or both parties would be saying "Can you hear me?? You there??". Nexus appears to underestimate it's signal. Call quality and data speed is much better at lower indicated signal than my Moto ever was.
Final verdict: I absolutely LOVE this phone!

I love everything about this phone except one very important thing: the signal strength.

The screen is amazing, the phone is fast, loving ICS... however, there is no reason my 2 yr old HTC Eris should get better reception & 3g connectivity. I can't compare 4g since the Eris wasn't 4g capable... but the GNex isn't getting reliable 4g anyway (and I am in the range where it should).

If the signal strength cannot be fixed on the software side before Jan. 15, I will be returning this phone. Everything else is moot if the phone can't communicate. And I hope it can be fixed because as I said, I think this phone is amazing in every other way.

Edit:
Forgot to mention that the battery life is lackluster as well, but I am attributing that to the connectivity issues. Fixing signal should fix the battery drain.

Oh really. So let me get this straight. You don't owned the phone and the folks on this forum who actually have this phone are happy for the most part and you don't want to pee on their parade,WOW!.

Did you read the part where I used all 3 devices side-by-side? I am guessing many Gnex owners have not done so. And have you not read the plethora of comments about reception issues with the Gnex? My comment/question was very reasoned and straightforward. If you have nothing constructive or substantive to say, please just keep moving.

My preliminary take on this phone is mixed. It's fast, agreed, but I'm going to only discuss the negatives for now.

The initial battery life was abysmal. I mean BAD. To be fair, I was probably on the edge of good 4g reception and it insisted on downloading EVERY app I had on my DX to the phone with no way of stopping it. Hitting the "Stop" button did absolutely nothing. I went from fully charged to dead in about 4 hours. Overnight I went from fully charged to 70% while it sat. Maybe something is running in the background. It's something I'll have to re-evaluate more fairly later.

Compared to the Droid X, the damn thing is slippery. It needs a case. The back cover doesn't aid much in holding it because I hold the edges not the back. Why don't designers think this stuff out. Very much an Apple-like "form over function" error. The case should be here next week.

Whoever decided not to put in an SD card deserves to get punched in the face. The protocol used is stupid. I'm coping MP3s to it now and EVERY new copy it says "This file may not play, do you want to do this?" to which I have to click "Do this for all files" and "Yes". It's beyond moronic. Maybe I'm missing a driver on my Win7 PC. Copying a huge amount of files invites it to just drop the connection.

The LED does pulse way to slowly for "built in" apps and just stays lit for HandCent text messages. There must be a happy medium somewhere.

Finally, the screen seems way too dark on auto. I considered boosting it but my battery usage was like 75% display so jacking it up will make that worse. How can this screen be so inefficient?

I have the extended battery and will probably install it soon. I also plan on unlocking and rooting in the next few days so perhaps the SW problem will disappear after it gets wiped. I really just wanted to add apps slowly. I hope I can do that after the wipe.

I know this sounds very negative but these are only initial impressions and I imagine much of it will improve as Google gets feedback and tweaks things. I'm not returning it yet but haven't ruled that out either.

My led used to stay lit for handcent but theres an option for it to blink and theres even an option for different pulse rates. Its under notification settings.

Previous: Droid X

Let me first say, I haven't even had the phone for 24 hours yet but, I absolutely love it right now.

That being said, there are a few concerns. I've already had once where the phone was suddenly non-responsive and it rebooted on me. I don't know if it downloaded an update without me asking that required reboot or what but it did it.

The feel of it in my hand is not much different from the Droid X except for the weight seems to be better. I'm excited about what the phone can do and what will come in the near future. It's quick, it's new, it's exciting..

The difference from the Droid X is truly night and day. But, my X was having issues as of late (after Gingerbread update) so that was a welcomed upgrade.

When you root, uncheck the two Google sync options after you enter your Gmail password. That will prevent all those market updates.

Hey Everyone,

Just gonna share my initial reaction and general thoughts on the Galaxy Nexus in no particular order.

Here's my smartphone device history (so you get a sense of where I am coming from):

Blackberry Curve -> i*hone 3G -> Droid Incredible -> Droid X -> Droid Bionic -> Galaxy Nexus

General sense: I think that this phone is a giant leap forward for Android. Another reviewer said something like Android is “getting a soul”, I would have said it already had one, but now it’s a lot more in your face.

I love the hardware. I don’t mind the plastic feel at all. I think it’s well built, much like the Droids I owned. The major difference lies with Motorola’s choice of metals and industrial design. That’s a preference thing to many people and while the Motorola Droid variants are solid, Samsung has come a long way from their first Android phones, in my opinion.

Screen is gorgeous. It really pops! I love this screen!! I just wish the auto-brightness was a little more aggressive. It seems dim to me in a lot of ways when turned on, usually I have to manually adjust it myself. However, when you watch a movie on this thing, it doesn't feel like it's a small screen!! It's almost like a phablet :) (phone tablet!)

The software is like buttah. It’s the star of the show in many ways, one being fluidity, another being smoothness, and another being speed. I can multi-task like a champ on this thing AND it rarely ever stutters. When it does stutter it’s because I have A TON of apps open doing MANY things in the background simultaneously. If there’s one thing I could wish for now, it would be that all of my old apps would work well under ICS. In time, they will, I’m sure.

Rooting and ROMing is something that I am into a major way. After all, it’s MY phone, let me do with it as I PLEASE. That being said, thanks to Vanilla Android and Google’s open nature to accessing their software, this was the most painless rooting/unlocking I have ever performed in my life. If my old i*hone is at one end of the spectrum, the G-Nex is definitely at the other complete opposite end.

Battery life hasn’t been so good. I’ll come out and say it. My old Droid X had the extended battery of 1900mAh and that thing STILL has excellent battery life some 17+ months later. I can’t say that about my G-Nex yet. I’ve already got the extended battery for it, but it doesn’t seem to be helping all that much. I guess it could be that I can’t put the phone down, but I digress in any case…

Camera is pretty good. Now, I'll admit, I haven't been subject to awesome Nokia cameras, nor the stupendous Galaxy SII camera, but coming from a Droid Bionic, this camera is LIGHTYEARS better than that one. I find you get this best results if you don't rapid fire on the software camera button. FOCUS FIRST. That'll make your pictures actually quite good. I haven't tested out video recording yet, but I am sure it will be good for a smartphone. Any more and you'll need a dedicated camcorder.

tl;dr – The long and short of it is, if you’re on the fence about getting into a contract for the next two years on Verizon wireless, have no fear – your phone is here. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is the one you’ve been waiting for, even if you don’t know it yet! Do yourself a favour: Get one. Immediately. That is all. :D

Shoot any comments, questions, or concerns you have my way! I'd be happy to answer them.

So far, I'm really enjoying my new GNex. Of course, anything would be a joy after my POS TP2.

Screen is awesome, it's super fast, I can actually visit websites without the phone crashing, and the battery life seems to be strong. I also noticed the extended battery fits just fine under the stock back cover. Very cool. Can't wait to test the extended battery life.

The only complaint so far is the notification light. It's so far between blinks, it's very easy to miss. I really hope someone comes up with a fix to allow adjustment of that.

Back to work...

It's Okay(coming from Razr and 4s). I really want to love it, but I think I may go back with the Droid Razr.

I Know I've only had the phone for a little over two hours but it is a drain on the battery. Generally I can use a phone with my car charger and it won't drain the battery (usally adds to the life). With this phone, even with my charger plugged in, the battery is ran throuh in no time. VERY CONCERNING. Last phone I had like that was the Palm Pre (Horrible battery life, awesome OS).

Second killer thing is the radio - No signal or extremely weak signal. when I do have 4g it is blazing fast; but I'm so often on 3g or no signal that I don't have time to enjoy it.

Third killer: My phone's in browser vidoe playback trails anything I've ever used. Clips load but then stutter or stall, even in 4g. The only phone that is near as bad is the iPhone youtube playback.

Other than those things (which to me are critical; thus my desire to back to the Razr) I think the Phone is nice.

-The Camera is pretty good when using flash or in nicely lit areas
-Camera is crazy fast (although Fast bust app is fast)
-I like the feel and build of the phone (Plastic does not = cheap) though I prefer Razr build
-Screen is amazing (one reason I may not go back to Razr)
-phone is quick
-Love the new app drawer
-Love the Notification shade
-Love the color scheme
-Love Browser speed (whenI'm getting data) AMAZING
-The Folders are more beautiful than iOS.

OK, so I said earlier that the important things to me are battery life, phone reception, data reception and the display. I went to Verizon today to play with the RAZR, Rezound and Gnex. THe GNex's display was not so much better than the other two that I couldn't get past it. I did notice that the RAZR and Rezound (both within a few ft. of the Gnex) got a better signal, and I am hearing in here that the phone does not sound great and is not that loud. Battery life has yet to be determined. So, after weeks and weeks of great excitement, it is looking like 3 of the 4 things that are most important to me (and seem to be very basic items) are not very good on the Gnex. How in the world does Verizon/Google/Samsung release what should be a flagship 4G phone with such a poor radio? How does a phone of such caliber have such a poor speaker? I wanted sooooooooooooooo badly to walk in, try all three phones and be like "F' yeah, Gnex kicks butt!! All that anticipation and excitement was warranted!!" To me any smartphone should start with doing the basics well, then accentuate that with some additional awesomeness like ICS and panoramic camera and face recognition and all that stuff. Reception and speaker quality should be baseline items. I really don't want to pee on anyone's parade, but does anyone feel remotely similar?

Battery life: Make sure you go through an initial charge, complete discharge and full charge(with phone off) before you become critical of the battery. Batteries typically take a cycle or two before they fucntion best.

Phone reception: I havent had any problems with calls or texts, or the typical (no data, please retry) that i used to get from my Droid x occassionaly when going through apps or market.

Data reception: Ive had some concerns. But let me say at my home I struggled to keep a 3g connection on my DX. My GNEX i struggle to hold strong 4G, but always have 3G.

With that said, my 4g at work and at home is 1 bar and 2 (out of 4) if lucky. But i always hold a signal at home, much better than my droid x. I STRONGLY believe 4g is dependant on the specific tower you are near.

On my local commute to work (15 mins) I had 3 areas where I hit 4 bars strong. Speed test (which is NOT always relative to phones performance) read 27/11 23/10 19/9 21/8 Download/upload (in no particular order)
But at home was seeing 9/7 7/2 8/6.

Now this is a big difference, but keep in mind all 4G is not created equal. You can prove this by changing teh server you use in the speedtest app. You will get different results every time.

Speaker: Its not loud, its not quiet. Its kind of normal to me. I haven Ringdroid'd any ringtones so I leave my conclusion undecided. But FWIW, I do think the ringer is loud enough for me to hear that my phone is ringing. I have a good set of earbuds that I use for listening to music, and when i need real music played, i have a nice system in the car and at home. I guess you can be critical of this if your asking the phone to fill a room with a netflix movie, but its just not made to do this.

-As far as the Rezound. It may have a stronger radio in it, i ran a speed test next to my mans at work. His phone read 2/3 bars while mine was getting 1/2 bars of signal. Im not 100% sure on this, but wouldnt a stronger radio need a stronger supply of battery to be efficient?
-Maybe it was a bad decision to go for battery life over a strong radio(im sure different radios require different power supply) but if you want a thick phone with a better radio or a thin phone with a slightly less efficient radio. than the choice is yours

90% in love with the phone so far.

Signal strength. Not too bad, but it does seem to not be quite as strong as my og. But when i did latch onto 4G in lexington, KY .. whoa. Fastest was 49571 kbps down. Absolutely INSANE speed. I've never browsed the market, web so fast. It was insane fast. Sadly, in my office I can't get a solid 4g sig, so I dial back to cdma. Wifi strength seems good.

Speaker .. it is kinda soft. but not an issue so far.

ICS is taking some getting used to . I liked my CM7 and older os's for customization. ICS seems a little more "locked down" regarding home screen/icon/etc customization.

Battery is ok. I don't think it is too bad. I am careful about what i have turned on though .. so I get good life out of it.

I disable auto brightness. I set it, pretty high actually, and it just looks so much better.

Very, very nice phone. I won't say it is "great" phone .. but it is very nice.

i give it an 8 outta 10.

yeah .. when i set it up at the store, i made sure all syncs were off at first. then only turned on email, calendar, etc... manually turning them on. not quite sure how, but I was able to avoid the auto sync of apps and them being pulling down like crazy. i have to manually install them, but that is fine by me. i try to keep my apps to a minimum anyways .. just the ones i absolutley love; easier to rebuild that way! :)

i agree with the pretty terrible battery life most are mentioning here, but I did full charge it before using it drained it completely until it turned off this morning and I am now full charging it again one more time hopefully this helps although I thought this type of stuff wasn't necessary with new battery technology but I am doing it anyways....and I don't have reliable 4g here so most of the time i was on 3g.

You don't owned the phone and an inside store comparison does not provide the best user experience. I see what folks are saying who own the device. How you know the GNEX owners didn't look at the Rezound and Razr just like you did, and made there choice?. You don't owned the phone and so the user who has a daily hands on experience is more credible than your in store side by side comments which is all personal preference.

#1 to the lightflow suggestion for LED notifications. To be honest, I've barely had time to get through all the menus yet with unlocking/rooting on the brain yesterday and working last night. I agree that the signal strength is iffy, I'm at -100 db in many situations but I'm confident 4.2 will address it. If not, I'm guessing a dev fix will be on the way to perhaps increase power to the radio which I believe to be an option but not 100%.

I LOVE having the good sized LED notification back. The Inc didn't do well in that area and it was sorely missed. I think it's going to take more time to become familiar with everything. Hell, I'm still retraining my thumbs to reach the "G" and "V" keys when typing in landscape...this screen is big! :D

Previous phone: Droid Incredible

I've had the GN for about 24 hours now. I LOVE it!! My poor iPad 2 has been sitting all alone while I play with my phone. :)

It is BLAZINGLY fast. I had my first 4g experience this morning because I don't live in an area that has 4g yet and I was very impressed. I even called my wife just so I could talk and browse the web at the same time. :)

The screen is just gorgeous. I watched a part of a Netflix movie last night, just to see the video on the device. AMAZING! When the buttons disappeared and gave way to the movie I was in heaven!

Ice Cream Sandwich is an awesome upgrade over Gingerbread. It's like a night and day difference. Most of the little quirks that irritated me about Gingerbread seem to be gone. For instance, I could never understand why my Google powered phone couldn't sync bookmarks with my Google powered Chrome.

It's nice having the 32GB of storage. I had to cut down my music library on my Incredible. On this device, everything is back. :)

So far, I've not noticed horrible battery life, but coming from my pathetic Incredible, anything would be an improvement.

Ok.. that's the good, not the not so good:

I am a bit disappointed in the volume of the speaker. It's not a major deal, but I would like it to be a bit louder.

I CANNOT seem to get used to the power button being where my volume button is on my iPad. I've turned my phone off twice by accident while trying to turn up/down the device. It's weird because the volume controls are pretty close to where they were on my Incredible, but I keep reaching for the right side instead of the left side.

I don't like where the audio jack is. It's just weird. I can't think of any other audio device (phone, MP3 player, CD player, Walkman - yes, I'm that old!) where the audio jack is on the bottom of the device. I do like the placement of the USB jack, though, so I guess I'm just odd. :)

Why do I have to hit "OK" after entering my PIN to unlock it??

The bookmarks in the browser seem like they are buried. I always have to think about where they are when I want to use them.

Well, that's just my thoughts after 24 hours with it. I almost got an iPhone 4S a month or so ago, and now I'm SO glad I wanted to get this! Siri's siren call almost lured me away (not really.. it was more having the iPad/iPhone experience) but I'm very glad I stuck with Android now!

EDIT: I forgot to mention the camera! I take LOTS of pictures with my camera. Pics of the family and also pics of items I sell on eBay. I was afraid I'd be very disappointed in the camera coming from an Inc with an 8MP camera. I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the shots I'm getting with the camera. I've taken quite a few different ones with different lighting and different conditions just to see how well it does and I'm happy with it. The panoramic images are awesome! I didn't realize before I got the phone that it was just a continuous image. I thought you took several pics and stitched them together and I thought that wasn't anything new.

+1 on lightflow.

We all know whats good about this phone, lets talk about the bad. Like similar reviews mine will echo their concerns:

-Battery life.. what battery life? I have everything shut off and this still averages 4 hours.

-4g.. nice when its there.. but where is it?

-Lag. C'mon really still? Unacceptable for a dual core phone. This alone might be a dealbreaker for me. If you beg to differ, take your nexus to a sprint store, and play with the epic touch side by side, you'll see what I mean.

-camera. Not the best, Don't understand why they didn't use the same sensors as the GS2, I could go without the "Zero lag" crap for a nice looking camera.

-screen. Beautiful, but can I use it? Not a bit. Turn the screen up and burn your face/hand as well as have a dead brick in an hour.

Don't know if I'm keeping this or switching to sprint for the eptouch....

i have a few questions for anyone on here and hopefully they get answered.

1. what version of android are you guys on (verizon)? I'm on 4.02 and was wondering if there is a more up to date version that i may be missing.

2. has the google wallet fiasco been resolved? can we have it on our nexus and use it(verizon)?
