Galaxy Nexus Watering Hole

I love it. I set my homescreen to look similar to my Thunderbolt, using beautiful widgets (loved the sense clock too much). Grabbed syncmypix for my contact pictures, and light flow for the LED. I am still on the fence about unlocking and rooting. Was gonna do it last night, but forgot my USB cord at work. Today is my last day of work, will PROBABLY do it tonight, but I may chicken out. I just don't see a need based on my usage yet, but also don't want to get two months into owning the phone, decide to do it, and have to re-do everything. Someone talk me into or out of it ;) (Like I have any doubt where yall are gonna point me ;) )

It's just like you said - are you really going to want to do it after a few months of having the phone and having everything customized? I've been holding back from installing all my apps and everything because I'm finally going to get enough time tomorrow to sit down and unlock the bootloader. Seems like the best idea to just unlock and root now, get it out of the way, then if you decide later that you want to do something with it, it's all already done. :)

I was in the same boat, unsure if I should or not, but then I decided to do it now and save myself the hassle later. It's simple enough, and according to Droid-Life, unless you actually flash a different rom on there, you won't lose OTA's, so it's a win-win :)

I think I'm getting this and returning the extended battery:

Set Your Location

See, the extended battery isn't giving me as much extra juice as I would like. Also, my standard battery is useless, basically, because I don't want to have to carry a battery AND a cover around with me.

So I think I'll get this (battery+stand-alone battery charger+y cables) so I just have to throw the battery in my jacket pocket if I'm going to be away for longer than usual or something.

For me, it's showing up as $29.99 with free 2-day shipping, which is way better than the $37 I got robbed from at the store.

I'm just going to use a bit of tissue or whatever to hold the standard one down under the extended cover as the extended cover seems to give the back of the device a nicer contour in my opinion anyhow. And I would rather have a bit more juice and maybe get away with never doing a switch on low use days. This extended battery is kind of a compromise where you get a very svelte shape, but don't really get so much extra juice. I do think the device would probably fit in about any dock even with extended battery because of this though, so that is nice.

I'm sure this is because I've barely been doing anything with the phone all day while at work, and have GPS/sync turned off, but I'm actually really loving the battery life and how efficient the phone is when the screen is off:

Yeah mine on my nightstand last night was 1% per hour, and that was with GPS and sync on (wi-fi).

So who else tried out face unlock? I was suprised how fast it worked in decent lighting. But realized it wasn't for me, because I leave my phone on my desk at work, and don't want to pick it up to turn it on and unlock it.

I love it. A helpful hint: Use Improve Face matching a couple times to catch your face at different angles. This helped me to ensure getting it to unlock holding it different ways.

Is anyone disappointed about the phone, outside of speaker volume, and want to return it? I don't think I've ever seen such positive feedback from a launch before.

Also, nice touch from the Google team with that "Welcome to Your Galaxy Nexus" email.

Slightly disappointed about external volume, but not nearly enough to think about returning it. I almost always have my phone set to vibrate, but it would've been nice to have a little more volume.

They're pogo pins ;) and the verizon dock currently doesn't have them. The gsm dock that does isn't yet released either. Hopefully as soon as that is released there will be a version for our LTE versions. I really want that dock. Or even better if the LTE version fit the same dock.

Either way, the pogo pin dock for the LTE version isn't currently available.

Yeah, I was quite annoyed when I realized all of this early yesterday, but happy I hadn't got the VZW dock if they had been in stock at my store.

Hope one with passthrus is out soon.

The main Gnex forum is getting out of hand. Nobody searching, posting questions about the same stuff. I'll wander around there but hang in here for the real info.

Tell me about it. I was trying to help out, but I am just going to start linking to the first post if people post without searching. Make them go somewhere else to look for the answer. Wish I could lock those threads though.

So you have background sync turned off? IE - not getting push GMail? Eek.

Also can I see an Android OS screenshot again?

Same thing here. I tried it and even in what I would consider LOW light conditions, face unlock worked. I turned it off today though because I realized how silly it was to pick up my phone and look in the mirror every time I wanted to unlock it. I hate looking at myself, lol.

+1

Played with it and customized the phone yesterday, then unlocked/rooted it today.

I don't mind reinstalling and customizing it this time (it's still just fun!,) but the longer you wait the more of a pain it will be.)

I don't know which I like more, the phone or the 4G. I love it when I go to install an app and it recommends wifi only. I tell it to download anyway and "bam!" it's on my phone. It's going to hurt when I get back home and have to revert back to 3G. :(

Well, there is that Universal Rom that's posted in the Root section. It's supposed to be a huge help with battery life (supposedly) and make things a bit smoother. It's using a custom kernel.

I'm not sure I want to go fiddling with that quite yet, until Google releases a few more updates and things get a bit more evened out. I'd hate to flash a ROM on it so soon and miss out on an important update.

. . . the extended cover seems to give the back of the device a nicer contour in my opinion anyhow.. . . .

And I'm the opposite, lol. I can actually feel the difference in weight and thinness now that I swapped it out for my standard battery and door. I like the little hump at the bottom.

So who else tried out face unlock? I was suprised how fast it worked in decent lighting. But realized it wasn't for me, because I leave my phone on my desk at work, and don't want to pick it up to turn it on and unlock it.

That thing works so much better than it did at the Hong Kong unveiling, no? I'm using it today, but it does get a little annoying. You can, however, change the time that it locks after it goes to sleep (security settings, I believe). I don't know if it's minutes or longer.

I don't think I've ever seen such positive feedback from a launch before.

Agreed! I loved my OG Droid when I first got it, but even in the midst of my excitement, I hated the weight of it and the hard keyboard. I don't even mind the volume level on this too much, because I'm mostly in a quiet environment for most of the day. When I'm out and about, (hiking, snowboarding, etc.) on vacations, a loud ringer wouldn't be enough anyway.

The only gripe I have at this point is that some apps aren't compatible with it yet. Doubletwist sucked big time at converting videos on it, Moboplayer tends to have some issues with HD mkv's, and I still can't find a Netflix app that will stream in real HD.

But that's more of a developer problem than anything with the phone.

Yeah, background sync is off. I found that since I'm sitting at a computer with my Gmail open, having mail also sent to my phone was redundant; and since I send so many links to myself to check out later at home, having them also pop up on my phone was annoying as well.

Me too. I quickly realized how ugly I am :D, but it works well enough that I do find it to be helpful rather than just a gimmick.
