Can some one explain how a dummy like me can set up Google Voice to replace Verizons Visual Voicemail since it is not supported by ICS? I keep getting an error that it cannot verify my phone nmuber.

All I want is to receive my voicemail somewhere with my current Verizon number. I'm not really sure how a phone can be released on Verizon's network and not have access to voicemail?

Thanks for the help. Signal strength is good.

I get up to the part where it asks me to set up a pin but when I submit it eventually errors and says that it could not verify my phone number.

Well here's the thing. I tried it on my Droid X. I got the same error because my Droid X is not activated with Verizon or anyone, it's just on wi-fi. Check your 4G sim card and make sure it's in all the way and working. You might still want to give Verizon a call about your voice mail too.

My brother, who has an SGN and is trying to set up google voice for the first time, is having the exact same issue. I'm not sure verizon is letting people use google voice with their verizon phone number. That probably is a bigger statement than I should make, but it definitely seems that way

Well I can't see how they could do that, considering their own official visual voice mail app clearly states that its not supported on the Galaxy Nexus.

I just got a text from verizon that I have 5 unheard voicemail messages, with no way to retrieve them.

Is there a number I can call to listen to them, old school style? LOL

Ditch that trash app and download google voice. It will error when you first set it up, but as long as you dial the forwarding number and it hangs up, your good to go. Just open the app as you normally would.

Also, google voice is free.. why give verizon more money then you already do?

I'm trying I'm trying! What forwarding number are you talking about? I saw no mention of forwarding anything during the set up process. I even went on the google voice site and couldn't find anything.

Also, are you saying once I get google voice set up I no longer need to pay the $2.99 a month for the visual voicemail feature?

Thanks.

Yes but make sure you call veruzon and cancel the feature from you plan. The setup process should tell you to dial a number, it wilm give it to you in link form. Pressing the link will input the number in your dialer for you. Call the number and your phone will instantly hang up. This acivates the voicemail forwarding. If you skipped this step, set up again.

I got it working by going to voice.google.com. I thought it was going to be as easy as installing the app, but apparently there is a little leg work involved.

You guys just saved me 3 bucks a month. I'll put that towards asurion coverage.

Thanks for following up eddie. Would you be able to elaborate a bit on the steps you took at voice.google.com to get everything set up? The only option my brother (who is having the same issue you had) could find was porting his number, which I think is not the right option.

Just realized the issue my brother is having.

It's a separate issue to get google voice working so that you make calls and texts from your original verizon number. That involves being off contract with verizon, then notifying them you're porting your number to google, then signing up again on your verizon contract. switching the voicemail service is much simpler.

In conclusion, I should have had my brother port his number to google for 20 bucks last week before we bought SGN's, so that google voice would use his normal number -________-
