Experimental 3D launcher?

Imho : I like the way the carousel looks. But everything else leaves something to be desired. Maybe in time, Idk, it's experimental. It only works in landscape on evo 3d, but I understand why. That said, I have my doubts as to how far the developer's will delve into customization for use on 1 phone. I wish somebody would take this idea, and attack it from the angle of a 1 phone solution. That would be worth 15 bucks. It would have to handle orientation changes well, and be able to pick and choose what items/screens made best use of the barrier. It's still going to be fun to flash this in front of iphone fans :)

So you're saying that the carousel and stereoscopic view only works in landscape mode?

Although I do use my phone in landscape mode quite often, I'm use to viewing certain content in an upright position. Particularly when I turn it on or pull it from my pocket.

Could you provide a rundown of what things are viewed in stereoscopic mode through this launcher. Like widgets, backgrounds, icons, and so on... At least I'd have an idea of what to expect, rather than be underwhelmed, after paying $15 bucks for it.

The launcher itself works in both landscape and portrait. You can lock it to either landscape or portrait or set it to change when rotated or whatever. And the carousel and everything else works in both portrait and landscape.

The stereoscopic 3D only works in landscape. It has the carousel and everything else, but the screen is locked to landscape in that mode. And to be honest, I couldn't stand to leave that stereoscopic 3D on for more than about 30 seconds.

It's still pretty new though. The update that added glasses free 3D was just released a few days ago. So I'm hopeful they will polish it and make it something people actually want to leave enabled. But for right now it's still in the "experimental" section in the settings (which they define as features that are not yet ready for full release but they include for us to play with anyway, or something like that).

It's a start, but we're not there yet.

The launcher itself is top notch though. If you're underwhelmed it will only be due to the cost, not the launcher itself. It has pretty awesome widgets (although I did add Beautiful Widgets, which works great with SPB Shell 3D- .10 in the market today, grab it if you don't already have it), it's totally customizable (is that a word? lol), and it's basically unlimited. You can have as many panels as you want. I just added a new panel specifically for games to hold all these .10 games I am grabbing from the market.

I bought ADW Launcher EX for .10 the other day when it was .10 in the market. I ran it for about 5 minutes just to check it out. I then went right back to Shell 3D. I really think it's the best launcher out there. It can be argued that it isn't worth $15, but I don't think there is an argument against it being the best.

SPB did just get bought by some Russian company, so hopefully they don't ruin a good thing. They did release this update after that though, so maybe that's a good sign.

Well, based on the some of the reviews, both good and some bad, I went ahead and bought the SPB Shell launcher - mainly out of curiosity for it's stereoscopic capabilities. It's a little too early to really say if I like it or not, since I've had it set to the stereoscopic mode for the two days that I've owned it. I'm just trying to get a feel for it in that mode, and I'll eventually rever back so that I can change up the widgets to my liking.

I'll also have to get use to the way the widgets and other settings are arranged and operated. I guess you can say I've grown accustomed to the Sense, so it'll be like starting from scratch in a sense for me to learn this new launcher. I guess the best teacher for me will be Youtube.

I personally can't stand to leave it in the 3D mode for more than a few minutes. I would suggest you treat that mode like a novelty until they get it more polished, or at least until you learn the ins and outs of the apps.

What you will probably want to do with it...
Set up a panel for each type of function. So a panel for games, a panel for internet stuff (Phandroid app, browser, tapatalk, all that kind of stuff), e-commerce panel (ebay app, amazon, android market, newegg, whatever you use to buy stuff online), A utilities panel, a music panel, and so on. You can have as many panels as you want, and you can put whatever you want on each one, so you can really organize it however you want.

Get it set up the way you want it. After you get it set up, play with the settings and you can see what they do.

Although it hasn't been a year yet that we've had our devices, I wonder why HTC hasn't put forth an effort to getting a horizontal stereoscopic version of Sense out on the market, or some other stereoscopic-centric program... I guess they figure they'd let some third party developer like SPB come out with it first.

Even Phereo isn't a unique concept. And with HTC pushing the 3D tech, something as simple as a stereoscopic picture server seems like a reasonable gesture to the devoted people investing in this device.

Don't get me wrong, I have plenty of 3D content to keep me busy and entertained for well over a three week period of time. It's just that HTC or Sprint hasn't really put forth any further effort in standing behind the technology, once they sell it.

...Then again, is it really their responsibility?

I totally agree. The least they could have done was make a way for us to share 3D pictures with other 3D phone owners (like a 3D MMS or something).

Phereo is cool but you don't always want to share your picture with the whole world.

A simple solution to that is to have an app that alerts you of someone with another 3DVO device in your vacinity - Similarly to those love-finding capatability apps on the market. And you can choose to friend them via a profile and swap photos, or do whatever. That, to me would seem like a great way to use the 3D feature of the device, while at the same time meet like-minded people.

I think we should have something even better than that. Like a real way to share them similar to MMS but for 3D.

If I'm on a trip across the country and want to send my wife (who also has an Evo 3D) a 3D picture, it should be as simple as tapping the picture, hitting share, and selecting the built in app that was made for sharing 3D pictures and videos.

Or some sort of MMS service and messaging app modification to allow for 3D files would have worked too.

I tested a free copy that is floating around the net (version 1.5.1). I had to reinstall it every time I hit the home button a 2nd time because It detects that i didn't pay for it (which is quite fair, btw). I just wanted to see if it worked glasses free before paying for it. It actually does work in full stereoscopic glasses free when using the 3d mode on my Evo 3D. They just need to fix the wallpaper part to prevent it from distorting it and be able to see the background in 3D in portrait mode and then I would buy it in a heartbeat.

I have been using SPBShell for quite a while, and really like it. The 3D interface though? not so much. I mean, it is fun to mess around with and show off to people, but I can't really see any reason I would want to use the 3D portion all the time. I bought SPB Shell because I like the other features. Having the 3D launcher is just an added little perk. I keep going back to it whenever they have a new update, just to see if it has gotten any better. I have to say, it ISN'T bad at all. I really expected it to hurt the performance quite a bit, but it really doesn't. I mean, it IS still noticeably slower, but not so much that it is annoying. Just a slight laggyness to it.
