Help Error: "Check for update is not available" anybody else?

Every time I would check for the update, all I ever got was Check update not available. Factory reset and there was the update. I don't know what holds it up. Just passing it on.

I wanted to make sure we are talking about the same thing. When you said "factory reset" did yon mean what is descrivbed in ...
Reset (sometimes called a soft reset) (sometimes called a battery pull) ...

With power On hold down volume Up/Volume Down/Power at the same time. After a few seconds a menu appears. Keep holding them all down. When the menu disappears release all the buttons. You can see that it then starts to boot up.

An alternative that achieves the same end is to take off the back, remove the battery, replace the battery, replace the cover, turn the Bionic back on. (When the battery is out, check that the SD-Ext card and SIM card are squarely and firmly seated.

Factory Reset (sometimes called a hard reset) ... a Factory Reset is a BIG DEAL and I would only do a Factory Reset if I was inches away from getting the phone replaced. A Factory Reset is going to erase all the data on your phone and you are going to have to reenter it. If you turn the phone in or sell it a Factory Reset is a good thing to do just before you turn it over.

With power Off hold down volume Up/Volume Down/Power at the same time

A Factory data reset screen appears
Select Reset
Select Erase everything

An alternative that achieves the same end is to
Select Settings | Privacy | Factory data reset
Select Reset
Select Erase everything
Perhaps you maeant to say "soft reset"?

No I meant hard reset. It really is nothing to be afraid of. Sometimes its the best thing for a phone. Is it something to do to get a update, probably not. But with nothing else working, and my phone has never ran better.

To make sure I'm in sync with swhat you are saying ... you did a Factory Data Reset that removed all data and all parameters that you had set on you Bionic and then you got automatic notification of the 5.5.893 update. Correct?

You also alluded to having other problems with "nothing else working".

Now it is working and you got notified of the update.

It sounds like you had a throughly "messed up" phone and now it is back on track.

Most people would view a Factory Data Reset as a next to last resort and a pretty big deal.

I am also curious if you just did a battery pull, or took it to a verizon store and they did a legitimate factory reset? I had my device factory reset once (back in October) and am trying to avoid it as it is a pain in the butt getting it back to the way it was, but my update still has not arrived, nor has my wife's and we still get the same error message.

FWIW, I have done soft resets and a battery pull and it still has not helped the cause.

The factory reset being talked about here is under settings, privacy, Factory data reset. It will wipe all data from your phone and put it back to the "new out of the box" state. For some people unable to get the updates, this is the only fix. You can always download them manually and install them from your sd card if you so desire.

You can get 5.5.893 by going to Settings | About phone | System updates.

This is the only OTA that has been made available on the Bionic.

There was some confusion. 5.9.901 is not an officaial release. (It was sent to some users it may never be released.)

Are you still not running 5.5.893 on both your Bionics?

There was some confusion. 5.9.901 is not an OTA it is a leak and has not been released. (It may never be released.)

And now there's further confusion because of that statement. :( That is a completely false statement to make. It IS an OTA update that was pushed by verizon to some phones. It was an accidental release, but, nevertheless it wasn't a "leak". It was definitely pushed OTA. And in fact, some people are still getting it when they complain to VZW about data issues. It's likely that it will be pushed officially in another week or two from what we've read.

The confusion arises from a misstatement.

I stated in another thread that the 901 release was not a soak test. It's still an ota leak, b/c it was leaked by moto and we officially obtained it from people who received it OTA.

Please keep the terminology straight.

OTA means over the air.

Leak means the update was not an official update, so that includes updates obtained via cheesecake add well as those that are pushed to our phones accidentally.

A soak test is a (most likely) future update that is being tested officially in the update channel by volunteers in what is called a soak test. Consider it a live, limited beta test.

I hope this clears things up. Using these definitions, 901 is both a leak as well as an OTA (although not an official OTA) but not a soaktest.

ROFL! Clear as mud. LOL :) Yea, I see the point. I personally view a "leak" as something that was never pushed OTA, even accidentally as in the case of 901. "Leak" implies that it doesn't have to be supported by Moto/VZW, whereas an OTA that was pushed, even accidentally, will be. And there's a big difference, IMO, between the two. A "leak" won't necessarily see an official update that supports it. Anything pushed OTA will have to have an official update even if they pushed it accidentally to a few customers. Not trying to complicate or confuse things but I want people to understand the difference and why 901, especially, is unique and in its own category.

Correct, both phones still not running 5.5.893. Both are still on 5.5.886 with error messages coming up when we go to check for update. I think I will have to do a factory reset. Are there backups for this sort of thing that make it easier to restore your phone to its pre-reset state?

I had a different interpretation for the implications of OTA. (Mine was over the air and supported by Motorola Verizon.)

I removed the reference in the first message and in the future will refer to this stuff as "official" and "unofficial" as appropriate. These terms do not seem to be ambiguous. OTA in all future references will simply mean over the air.

Thank you for pointing it out.

I am of the opinion that if 5.9.901 was not pushed to you that your use of 5.9.901 is at your own risk.

Thanks, Thom! I think we're all on the same page now.

That is strange. Have you had other problems with them? Have you root-ed them and been flashing? Have you installed and then installed some of the unofficial releases?

Same deal here with my wife's Bionic that is totally unmolested. I've tried every trick with it in this thread.......no luck.

Where are you located?

Did your Verizon store have any suggestions?

Thinking 145 times about the implications before ever doing it ... did "every trick" include a "Factory data reset"?

... Thom

Wyoming Thom. Haven't contacted Verizon yet.... And no factory reset, my wife would kill me after all the work she's put into setting it up. I'll wait a bit longer..

I am about 15 miles outside Philly, suburban area not rural. I never went to a Verizon store about this issue, only called customer service and they told me to wait as it hasn't been very long(according to them) and that it is released in batches and mine probably just hasn't been pushed to yet. Idk what to think because it doesn't seem like they know what they're talking about.

I was hoping you would say something like Russia ...

5.5893 was released on the 12th and pushed to me on the 16th. Today is the 26th.

I am pretty much out of ideas ...
You are not roaming
You are not on WiFi
you have Settings| Battery & Data manager | Data Delivery | Social applications | Sync over Wi-Fi only disabled

The only idea I had was one of the following ...

Go into your Verizon store and tell them the update has been received by large numbers of people over the las two weeks and you have one of three phonies that hasn't received it. Can they please check on the problem for you?

or

Go into your Verizon store and tell them you participate in a national conference area on the Bionic and everyone is wondering why your update hasn't appeared yet. Ask them "Exactly what would you like me to tell them in the conference?".

or

Wait.

Or, Download the thing yourself and apply it - it's digitally the exact identical file that was originally found and leaked over 2 months ago. I've even made a post about it and there should be links floating around.

Since it does not require being rooted or anything, you're welcome to try - but if I were you, I'd wait - b/c if your phone is not pulling the update for whatever reason, there may be something that might make ht update fail and leave you stranded. Since you're not willing to do a factory rest, you have three options - continue to wait, or take it in to the store, or get the update and try it yourself.

I didn't say I was not willing to do a factory reset. In fact, a few posts ago I asked about some sort of a backup to make returning the phone to normal a bit less time consuming. If there is something, I would be willing to use my phone as a test subject, do the reset, reload everything and finally see if it would update OTA like everyone else's.

I concur.

The link is in ... http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid-bionic/438060-bionic-reference-terms-links.html#post3398984 ... look in the leaked section near the end of the page.

If one exists it has never been mentioned in this forum.
