S-ON/OFF has traditionally been associated with an unlocked bootloader on an HTC.

Specifically, S-ON means that things flashed need an encrypted signature in order to flash - according to HTC.

According to the dev community, once you're unlocked, you can flash most anything even with S-ON.

True you have some tricks to play sometimes, and certainly from what I've seen with other HTC phones, it tends to limit which custom recovery you can install if you're unlocked with S-ON. But mostly, recovery is recovery and most people don't care which one so long as it all works.

Recovery is recovery unless you're Lindsey Lohan and then Recover is "I think I'll steal jewelry". ;)

I am seriously considering swapping my GNex for the Rezound but I'd like to hear from those of you that have used both -- how is battery life on the Rezound's standard battery compared to GNex's standard battery?

I may not offer the best opinion since I haven't owned a Nexus, but if the same poor signal from the Thunderbolt is plaguing the Nexus and you find you're in a weak 4G area constantly, then I'd say you're going to see improved battery life just from a consistent 4G signal. I'd be lucky to get a full day of battery usage from my Thunderbolt which would always lose a 4G signal. With the Rezound, the 4G signal is consistent and thus my phone isn't always hunting for a signal. i'm even using performance mode on my battery and still manage a full day.

After extensive research I have come to the conclusion that the Nexus is a flasher's dream. People who love to flash a new ROM every couple of days with be happy with the Nexus. I found after flashing about every ROM out there on my Droid X, I was tired of trying to find a ROM that worked 100% and didn't cripple something. MIUI messed up the camera, etc. Yet a lot of people run it anyway because they love the interface. It's easy to overlook issues when you love flashing ROM's on your phone, even though the phone may not quite work right here or there. So, I am not surprised that some Nexus owners can be perfectly happy even though their camera may not take good shots or they may lose data, or their volume and build quality are sub par. There's always the anticipation that an update will fix everything in the world of flashers. The next update, or next ROM is what flashers live for.

I decided that I don't want to have to flash a ROM on my phone to be happy with it. I want a phone that has all the features I like out of the box. Toggles in the notification bar, scrollable widgets, screen shots, etc. I would like to remove bloatware and restore backups with TB. I understand we can already do this with the Rezound although I haven't tried it yet. The Rezound has exceeded my expectations in every way possible. I don't need to flash a ROM on it because it works perfectly and it looks amazing.

So, if you are looking for a phone to flash, you will probably enjoy the Nexus. If you're looking for a phone that will give you a great out of the box experience, you would probably like the Rezound. It will be upgraded to ICS and something tells me I am going to like it on the Rezound much better than I would like it on the Nexus because I like having the soft keys on my phone.

I have not owned a Nexus, I did go to my local Verizon store to play with it on release day. I already had my Rezound and just wanted to make sure I had made the right choice.

Can you take screen shots with the Rezound without rooting it? I know its nothing big but that is an option I love!

I have noticed a night and day improvement in the battery department... The battery wasn't a problem so much with my nexus. My problems were the speaker and the reception.. BOTH were terrible.. You'll miss.ICS.. the keyboard, and the size of it.. I know that they are similar in screen size, but I sometimes notice its harder for me to see than when on the nexus (mainly websites).. Im not sure why everyone hates Sense.. It is kinda like MIUI... It has almost everything you could want in a phone... I'm telling you, if I had a rezound first and traded it in on a nexus, i'd really be hating the fact that I was going to be stuck with that phone for the next few years. With the rezound, I'm extremely happy.. It is an all around awesome experience..
Everything just works, and. Lets mention that HTC stepped up to the plate and unlocked their bootloaders.. How awesome is that... Very happy with HTC about that..

So here's my two cents as both a forum noob as well as an owner of two previous HTC devices and now two, count 'em TWO Nexuses. (Nexi?) I also have a SGT 10.1 and my son has a SGP 4.0 running GB. So I feel like I'm at least qualified to make some observations regarding Android devices. Or, maybe not. :) If there's Android kool-aid to be had, I've drank it.

Have owned and enjoyed an Incredible for the last 14 mos or so. Even got the GB update without any issues. Wife has the Inc. 2 and it's been a great phone for her.

On Dec. 15th, I went over to the local VZW corporate store and picked up my shiny new Nexus. Love the design, the screen and especially ICS. The new OS is like everything good about GB and HC merged together into a nice clean UI.

First couple of days were fine with the exception of the notification light, that simply does not work out of the box. Ok, that's odd, but a quick trip to the market to fetch the Light Flow more or less fixed that.

It was my first 4G device, so I expected to learn some things, and I was right. First, VZ's outages in the past couple of weeks played havoc with determining if my Nexus really had a signal issue or if it was just network gremlins. I live on the border of an "extended 4G coverage area" so I expected a weak 4G signal in my home and that played out as correct. Outside my house or at my office, 4G showed up pretty reliably. Speeds varied from place to place but it was definitely fast by any measure.

Until I started going places that weren't my driveway or my office. Maddeningly, I'd just lose signal at the most inopportune times. It seemed like whenever I'd actually want to make a call, I was greeted with "searching for service" while it struggled to toggle between 4G and 3G. Meanwhile, my wife's Inc. 2 hummed along on 3G without issue, even if we were deep in the bowels of a multi-level shipping mall, she could still make a call while my flagship Nexus sat there looking pretty.

After consulting with VZW technical support and trying numerous things, it was time to swap it out for another unit. So I did, and it's been exactly the same issues. Tonight was the last straw; I needed to make a call inside of a building and simply couldn't. Even toggling over to CDMA only mode and cycling airplane mode to force the switch yielded nothing. Again, I checked my wife's Inc. 2 and it gladly made the call, no issues. Of course as soon as we stepped outside, I got 3G back again.

As much as I really want to love the Nexus, it's just not a very good phone IMHO and I need it to be able to do that. The rest of the fancy stuff just doesn't matter if I can't use it as a phone reliably. Neither my Inc. or the wife's Inc. 2 have ever had a problem with reception save for the odd occasional locale where all cell signals have been limited.

So tomorrow, it's going back and I'm picking up the Rezound. Honestly, I'm a little burned out on Sense, but I think I can customize it enough to keep it fresh for me, but most of all I'm crossing my fingers that the reception is better. Also, the name "Rezound" is just awful...but maybe it'll grow on me.

Another minor gripe I didn't expect to have is with the Nexus' camera. It's terrible indoors even after reading many, many posts about the "right" way to use it. I'm very much of the mindset that if I want a good picture I'll use a digital camera, but since having kids, it IS really nice to have a decent camera on the phone to take a spur of the moment snapshot. Even the camera on my Inc. did a better job indoors than both Nexuses I've sampled.

Thus ends my journey with the Nexus and begins anew with the Rezound. I was able to handle one earlier today and was pleased by how it felt in-hand. Also, it reminds me of my Inc. and that was a great phone for me.

So long as the one they hand me doesn't have pink buttons, I think I'll be ok.

Now to find a place to unload a bunch of GN accessories...ugh.

Hey mustardtiger, sorry you had to go through all that and hope the Rezound will do what you need. Yeah it's a dumb name, especially when the Vigor code name would've been fine. The Rez has an excellent radio, so connections shouldn't be a problem anymore, and pretty much everybody likes the camera.

Sense runs pretty well on it, but you can easily replace it with another launcher, disable it using the CleanTool script, or remove it entirely w/the newly unlocked bootloader. Battery life is respectable too if you use a little care on sync and connection settings.

Please let us know how you like the new phone!

OK, I'll bite on this one. I have been a loyal iPhone user since the start, but just lost the love for some reason. I waited and waited for the GNex, got it, but the reception issues really got me. I live in a fringe verizon area, and while I kept a charge for hotspot when traveling, I never noticed just how bad the signal was.

I went ahead and got a network extender, but that didn't do much. I noticed the Gnex kept chewing through battery life and I would drop calls more often than my AT&T iphone (which is pretty bad).

I went ahead and loaded the 4.0.3 radios and that didn't help. I ended up getting another Gnex per verizon and same issues.

I swapped it for a rezound yesterday. I also activated a droid razr at the same time just for kicks to see if I liked it better. The beats headphones are great for some, except I doubt I will ever use or appreciate them.

So, quite the quandry now. I like everything about the rezound except its thickness. The 4s slides in and out of my pocket very easily. The razr does the same thing, except after 1.5 years of a retina display, I really notice the lower ppi on the razr.

Don't know if I can come to love the rezound and may just have to wait.

Anyone got any suggestions how to get over the hurdle, or am I just stuck?

I should say pre iphone, I would be swapping out GSM phones every 3-6 months with imports. Quite an expensive obsession. Haven't felt the need to do that since 2007, but I think I am about ready to jump back on the train...

I do like iOS, but my company does development on both platforms and I do like the progress made in ICS. Plus, we are heavily invested in Google Apps and android does handle that better than iOS.

Please let us know how you like the new phone!

Thanks for the nice welcome everyone.

Ok, so picked up the Rezound this morning. As always, the crack staff in the VZW store fumbled the transaction numerous times, and only after the third 19 year old "manager" came over and made a call into "corporate" were they able to return my Nexus and activate my Rezound properly. Gah. There's an hour I'll never get back.

Random thoughts a half day in:

While I do think HTC does the best job skinning Android, Sense does seem pretty over the top coming right off ICS. Still, I was able to spend an hour or so today moving things around and generally customizing it to my liking. It still seems needlessly heavy, but I knew what I was getting into with Sense. To it's credit, the phone seems to care less, it's easily as fast as the Nexus from what I've seen thus far.

My buttons, I'm glad to say, are not pink. :D

I do miss the design of the Nexus...it's a really nice looking phone. The Rezound is handsome in a familial way, but it's not a must-have, lust-inducing design unfortunately. The understated look does have it's appeal though, and the more I handle it, the more it reminds me of my original Incredible, albeit thicker.

4G reception is still sketchy in my house, especially in our finished basement. However, out and about this evening, I was able to make a call whenever I tried. The Rezounds' signal strength is better everywhere I checked and possibly most importantly, it manages the 4G to 3G hand off quickly and painlessly. Enormous improvement over the Nexus there and that's precisely what I was looking for.

The camera puts the unit on the Nexus to shame. I took a handful of snapshots in similar conditions as those I took with the Nexus and the Rezound's images look great. I am more than pleased with the performance of the camera and the shutter seems to be just as quick as the Nexus' zero-lag deal.

The screen is fantastic but to my eye it's about the same as the screen on the Nexus, with the distinction that the Nexus screen only really looks impressive when the brightness is cranked. The first 3/4 of the brightness adjustment on the Nexus makes the screen look less than stellar; it's only at the last 1/4 of brightness that it looks special. The Rezound's screen looks great at most settings I tried.

Battery life has been on par with my expectations thus far.

The Beats ear buds do sound pretty nice, but I'll never use them day to day.

HTC's native music player sucks....I need to do something about that even if it means losing the Beats enhancement.

Oh, thanks to the link in this thread, I downloaded the free version of the ICS keyboard, but even though it's selected and checked in settings, it looks like I'm still getting the stock keyboard. Anyone know how to activate the ICS keyboard? Is there a step I'm missing or do I need to get the 1.99 donation version for it to look like the ICS keyboard?

Not very many accessories available for the Rezound yet, huh? Immediately sought out a Steinheil screen protector...no go. Picked up a 3 pack of the crappy Verizon screen protectors just to have something on the screen for now, but it's far from ideal. Ordered a couple of cases to try out, and sadly, Proclip isn't showing a device holder for the Rezound. That's too bad as I have the vehicle mount already and their mounts are the best I've ever used. Might have to fab something up.

So far, I like the Rezound. I don't love it yet, but it seems like the sleeper of Verizon's 4G line up right now. I do regret that the Nexus turned out to be such a problem, and there's no way I could ever own a Razr.

Right now, I'm pretty happy with my decision to let the Nexus go and get the Rezound. I would however, be very tempted to go back if the Nexus' issues were well and truly sorted, but I can't wait around for that.

If anyone else is having issues with their Nexus and is considering the Rezound, I'd definitely recommend it, it's a very capable device.

Just go into text messages and start a text, hold down on screen until box pops up under your finger for text imput. change it there.

Nexus user here with one deal killer - the mic cuts out 20 minutes into a call on both Nexuses I have had. I love this phone but can't get past this issue which is critical for me.

I'm strongly considering a switch to the Rezound despite all the GOOD things about the Nexus just to have a phone that works. But I do have a question for all of you who went before me: are there any other problems on the Rezound that will be different but just as frustrating?

There's a thread somewhere about Rezound problems that had a good sized list. I'd hate to get rid of the Nexus with it's issues only to have a Rezound with problems of its own. If you don't mind, please take off the rose colored glasses for a minute and let me know if there is anything you don't like about the new phone (aside from GB, Sense, and thickness).

Fair and good question. Anyone? I've been running mine through the paces and haven't run into any "bugs" yet.

There's minor UI stuff I don't care for here and there, but that's really about it.

I used the Rezound and the Nexus side by side for 14 days. In the end I returned the Nexus. I honestly don't have any issues with my Rezound and I am not a fanboi by any means. To be honest, deep down I wanted to love the Nexus. I waited months for it!

My love of the Rezound is due in part to customization however. Handcent relieved any issues I had with sms/mms. Boat browser eliminated any issues I had with the stock browser. Loading the ICS keyboard eliminated the issues I had with the stock keyboard. Launcher Pro allowed me to customize to my liking. I believe this phone can be everything I want and more.

I feel that in the Rezound, I immediately get a much better camera, video camera, reception, signal, battery life, external speaker volume and screen compared to the Nexus. Screen is a matter of taste, as I prefer the brighter whites, brighter screen, and more natural colors compared to the super amoled screen of the Nexus. I also don't experience any of the screen banding, blockiness of dark colors during video playback, etc as seen on the Nexus.

I did like features of ICS, but it will arrive on the Rezound. And, when others might be getting a little bored with their phones....it'll be a nice little refresh to our Rezound!!

One thing you will notice too. If you go to the Nexus forums, you will find 4x as many threads. But you will also find that majority of them are regarding issues with the phone. Some will be fixed with software updates, while others will not. The Rezound is a solid phone out of the box with many more good things to come. I hope I helped you in your decision in some capacity!!

2 week nexus owner here.. can someone who has owned both devices help me out?

How do the standard batteries compare in terms of usage time? I have an extended battery on my gnex and get a lot of usage out of it (no signal issues either), plus the extended back cover adds barely any additional bulk to the device.

Can you get an extended battery for the rezound (~1800) that doesnt require a larger battery cover? I dont want to add any additional bulk to a device that is already thicker than the gnex.

thanks

I think the only extended battery for the Rezound right now is quite a bit larger, which features a big ol' back cover as well. Not my cup of tea.

Perhaps others will be available down the road. Specifically, I'm hoping for Seidio or others to step up with an increased capacity battery that fits under the stock cover, like the one I have in my Incredible. It's a good improvement without requiring a deeper cover and did give a nice boost to longevity off the charger.

Battery life seems ok though on the Rezound, and I'm predicting I'll get at least 10 to 12 hours based on my typically mild usage. That's fine for me as I'm almost always around a charger/usb port.

You're right though, the extended battery for the Nexus helped out a lot with that phone and only increased the thickness near the bottom of the phone and not by much at that.
