WARNING When using Google Wallet

To all of you who love using Google Wallet like I do - IF YOU ADD FUNDS TO A GOOGLE CARD, WRITE THE INFORMATION ON THAT CARD DOWN.

I love using GW and added funds to it. Yesterday, I replaced my phone and had assumed that reloading the GW app would find all of my funds, but they weren't there. I figured that calling GW would easily solve the issue. I was transferred to the responsible financial institution behind GW and they asked for the user ID# associated with the card (found by clicking on the card icon inside of GW app). Since the card wasn't showing up, they couldn't help me without that ID#.

I was transferred back to Google who asked how if I had "side loaded the app onto my phone" I told them that I had. They said that it isn't officially supported and without that if I had that ID# they could retrieve my money - without it I am out of luck.

He also informed me that the app could be removed and/or incapacitated if Google decided to (and might if alot of people have issues) so I should ALWAYS keep the ID handy....just in case.

In the end, my new phone gave me $10 and my old one had a balance of maybe $14, so no big deal. But I will keep up with that information from now on.

BTW, I was VERY suprised that NONE of my GW transactions showed up in my Google Checkout online account. The CS rep reiterated that this was also because the app isn't 'officially' supported. He said there is no news IF or WHEN it will ever get the official green light.

Just a heads up to save you guys some money - keep up with those ID#'s or don't damage or lose your phone!!
 
good to know but thatsa serious flaw from Google wallet. shows they jumped into this whole thing without proper understanding what they needed. sure its not supported but who doesn't have financial records that could tie to someone in the case of a lost phone? its like paypal, Paypal you can always walk back to where you need from either the Account where YOUR man was loadedfrom, the email adress you signed up with, date of birth, last couple of transactions. There is ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS a paper trail and if they couldn't find you it their fault. I suppose THEY are lucky it was only a 4 dollar lose for you.. but this is a lawsuite in the MAKING... it is their responsibility as a financial institute to keepthat information for their OWN tax purposes. Otherwise people could launder MILLIONS of dollars of illegal money through GW because apparently all they need is Gnex and no one will ever know.

funny thing is that i bet you could sue and will a hefty payout because though it was only 4 bucks... its the point that they are handling money wihtout the proper security in case of situations like this.

think of it this way. you go to a bank when your house burnt to the ground.. all your banking information wallet, checks, statements are GONE... you go to the bank and you say "i need money house burnt to the ground" they ask for ID, dont have it, account number? dont have it. do they say "well sorry sir but we cant give you your money without your account number or debt card"? no, lol they have other things to verify, SS# drivers license address, or you can go get new id and bring it. MANy many "fail safes" if you will. it kind of annoys me that GW doesn't have them. i would rage on them bro, and i will get $50-200 credit for this on their account. they have a MAJOOOOOOOOR PR problem and you have them by the short and curlies.

the skinney of it, you gave them money, all you did was get a new phone and reinstall THEIR APP. and their financial network LOST YOUR MONEY. you think anyone wlil take GW serious if it hit the news? i mean even if it was $1 google, the TYCOON company who is taking over everything it seems, are loosing "peoples" money... Talk to a lawyer brother.. its free to talk the first time see what they say... i bet he they will squeal like a girl over your case....

I completely agree with you. However, having "sideloaded" the app MAY be the issue that puts it realm of my responsibility.

As an update - after I posted earlier, I received an email welcoming me to Google Wallet. At that point I remembered not only receiving this email before, but also having received a verification when I had transferred money to Google Wallet.

I searched through my email's trash and found it. It had an order number and a telephone number to the issuing bank (not the issuer of my credit card but the issuer of the Google prepaid card which I had "purchased"). With this information I called the bank (Money Network, LLC) and gave them the order number. They took ALOT of information and then found the transaction and said they would have it resolved by merging the two accounts within 3-4 business days.

We shall see, I guess.

At no point in the original post was it stated that the rep behind the services stated that the money was lost. It was simply that without proper verification from an ID created within an unofficially supported app load, that they would be unable to retrieve it. And, if you see the follow-up post, he was able to get the information and it sounds like they are doing what they can to merge them together. Just like you should know what your password reminder hints are for sites, this would be more along the lines of that, I imagine. Make sure you jot down important information for future "just in case"s.

They should surely work on a better way to reauthorize accounts from phone to phone though. Granted, they probably are doing less, out of caution, and tweaking as they go, rather than try to jump totally into every option and end up potentially exposing more bugs and access to users finances.

thats awesome you got it taken care of but i would still be ticked at the lack of service google gave you on that. i love google but that mad me annoyed that they haver such poor financial awareness about all this

yes he did. The ID# he is talking about is an identifier for that "card" or "transaction" to GOOGLE.. he didnt exist. Its not like "you dont have the proper id so we cannot help you due to security reasons" it WAS "you dont have the id# which references your funds/account/however they word it. So we cant help you cause there is no way to find you. It has nothing to do with IDENTIFYING yourself. it has to do with WHERE YOU ARE in the system. He was a ghost to them. If you read the NEW post he put on there he said they figured it out by going through trash emails FINDING the number that was needed and then google handed him to a 3rd party lending institution that they used who then asked him a ton of question.

now that shed's some light on things. I dont know why google just didnt send him their in the first place so they could find him. i guarantee that banking institute could have found him without that number he found in his email trash

the point of saying it is a lawsuite is because there are people who dont know how to do what this guy did. My parents, they wouldnt even think about the email. They can use a computer and do online ordering but if anything ANYTHING goes wrong. they gotta call me. Thus, rules are implace for companies that handle peoples money. They have to be able to access your account through other methods. Why? because they have YOUR money. Google wallet is just a middle man. This is called MORAL HAZARD. Meaning, google has no responsibility if your money gets lost. Which, is against the law. Thats why these things are in place. Moral Hazard is considered illegal.

the best way i can illistrate how FAIL it was for GW is a gift card. A gift card can be bought at a local grocerie store, who is a third party, and then given to someone else. Lets say you loose this Visa gift card, what do you do? Call Visa, have the person who bought it with you, and tell them you lost it. the Gift card company will then take the Card info from the buyer, the store name and the location and date. Find what card was purchased and its #'s find out if the money was spent and if not issue a new one and cancel the old one. Why? Because before 2k something it was implemented that all creditors and holders of moneys must have ways of locating funds outside of normal perimeters. You paid for a service, you get the service. It isn't buyer beware anymore especially with electronic goods. There is such a clear paper trail. But i have rambled enough. Bottom line is google has to be responsible for accessing funds. This sounded a little more like the guy he talked to didn't know what he was doing and should have xfer'd him tot the financial institute GW is using. But they still should have had is info on file there. At least name and ID/Acc # so they can say "yes, you do exist"

Well, I ended up calling google wallet support when I had an issue with the verification process. They told me they *do not support google wallet on the galaxy nexus*. He said he very highly recommended not using it, because people have been calling them with problems. He also implied that it might be against the TOS to sideload the app and use it when it's not authorized.

So I very highly doubt there are any grounds for a lawsuit if there's any chance we are violating the TOS but installing this on an unauthorized phone. He also told me that he couldn't even pull up my account and see my transactions *because I was on a Galaxy Nexus* and that normally with the Nexus S accounts he can pull up the account and see everything.

So, I don't think this is necessarily a Google Wallet issue. It seems to be related to the fact that the app isn't authorized or supported and may not work or be recorded correctly on the Galaxy Nexus. So I'd keep that in mind,

it has nothing to do with the fact that they dont support it.... the app connects to THEIR system... unless the USER side (which your the user) manipulates their server side files. i mean its basic logic... if connect to google wallet through Dixie cups and SOMEHOW manage to give them YOUR MONEY lol.. they should have a record of it.. sure they cant give u "support" on the fact that the APP isnt working properly.. but the fact that they have YOUR money in THEIR system... the fact that it isnt supported in on the Gnex is irrelevant.

Example: you come up to me, and lets say i dont speak english but there is a sign that says $5 for 1 Sub. You realize i dont speak english... i realize i dont speak english... but you come to MY SHOP.. give me $5 dollars.. and then stand there waiting for your sub. and i give you nothing. Would you say "well he cant speak english so he can keep the money".... 0_o

i mean does this make any sense to anyone else but me??? that regaurdless of SUPPORT on the phone.. they had the dudes money and said they couldnt find it... but we dont support your phone.. the phone is irrelevant when it comes to the questions "wheres my money" it is however relevant to the question "i cant get on my profile anymore" "well sorry sir this app isnt made for your phone so we cant guarantee it will work at all"

No, it IS relevant when the money was loaded on with an app that was never officially supported for the phone. Perhaps there were issues with the accounts not properly allocating money to accounts and whatnot on certain models, which is why they didn't have it available for it. How can they be held completely responsible when they never said it would work properly on that model? How do we know that it wasn't a glitch in the app that never actually connected properly, and didn't allow their side to show the transaction correctly? It could be a million things. The way you're arguing your case is just over the top. The guy is getting it straight, and I'm sure it'll work fine. But you seem to just be on an anti-Google kick because of it.
