NEX vs Razr dbm test with network extender

hey guys and gals, I installed the newer 3g verizon network extender at work (big steel building), I was stilling getting one bar or no bars but I was still able to place calls with no bars, so I decide to get the network extender, so I have a coworker that has the Razr and I have Gnex, I did a test between the two phones, so went to both status screens about signal strength, that`s in dbm units, and I was surprise how low his number was to mine, the Razr had -57dbm 0 asu, and the Gnex had -75 16 asu this was the phone in the same place about 2 inches from the antenna on the extender, so I figured I would post my findings.

i`m just a happy person all of the time lol, I didn`t mean I was happy for the razr being better in the dbm dept. lol I edit the post:p

Guessing the SGN was reporting 4G signal, and you didn't force it into 3G.

3G at the office between razr's bionics and charges are exactly the same. Please search and read on how ICS reports the 4G antenna, where older android versions report the 3G antenna. Once you understand that, you'll be running into the office to re-test.

No the test was 3g for both phones there is no 4g in my area and both had the the LTE turned off on both phones so with the LTE turn off they both should be reporting the 3g signal

Wow, that's weird. I'm seeing similar between handsets.. about -76dbm is constant across the board in my office between all these devices.

I did buy mine from the first stock at my local store. I was going to wait to buy it, but was very impressed with ICS and the snappiness of this phone, so I bought one :D:D

yeah i thought it was going to be the same but it wasn't i just wanted to let people know what i did but its funny some times with both phones only 5 feet away my GNex would go down to 3 bars and it was still hooked to the extender because my work buliding u usually only get one bar of signal, i was just wondering thats why i did the test

That close to an antenna, not so sure that's correct either. Radio waves... might have to be further away. Just sayin' from my old CB radio days. That close couldn't get a good wave.

You guys are funny. Look the Gnex radio sucks, it just does. If you are in a great signal area, good for you, but if you are on the fringe of any network the radio is worthless. Maybe they will fix it with an update, I hope so. But until then, the radio does not compare to any other LTE phone. I know, I have had them all except the Pantech.

I know it isn't a 4G phone, but did you have the Incredible? My GNex in the same spot as my incredible gets signals within 5 dB and has a faster 3G connection and better call quality. I live in a pretty bad fringe area. I've actually made excellent quality calls on my Gnex when it was reporting a signal of 120dBm with LTE disabled.

yeah I have made calls, no problem with a 120dbm, I just rooted my phone and unlocked the boot loader and installed the leaked 4.0.3 radio and at full bars i`m still see-75 dbm I thought it might change the dbm at full bars but no change

Yeah that's just not true. Please search and read on the numerous real world examples of the nexus versus other phones all on 3G and find that plenty of people see weaker signal strength and poorer performance between phones connected to the same network and comparing eHRPD signal levels.

Heck i just compared my Nexus on 3G to my husbands thunderbolt (which reports the 3G signal strength even though his phone was connected to LTE) and he was 10 dB higher in a strong signal area. When i switched my phone LTE, i obviously could no longer compare signal strength since my Nexus reports LTE signal level but subsequent data speed tests consistently show my phone downloading and uploading faster--around 22-25 Mbps to his 15-18 Mbps.

I agree, but I probably wouldn't go so far as to say it 'sucks'. It certainly isn't as good as the Rezound's radio. I had the Razr and when I tested both I had some inconclusive findings. Although the Razr did a better job of simply getting a data signal in a poor area, the Nexus did better in holding on to a 4G signal once it got it. Often the Razr would drop down to 3G where the Nexus would still have 4G.

Either way, both the Razr & Nexus radios were clearly inferior to what I consider the benchmark for current 4G radios out there, the Rezound.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) I prefer everything else on the Nexus to the competition.

Just to toss mine in again as well, and I'm in a 3G only area, but I live in what you would definitely call a fringe area, and regardless of what the bars look like, or what the dbm shows, it has no worse performance than any other phone I've had here. I am still able to complete calls and texts, etc, with no change, from all my other phones, basic and smart. Same performance that my Thunderbolt has, that my old Smooth had and Omnia, and that every other person with Verizon experiences at the house. (outside, service, inside none without a Network Extender. However, there is one spot on my bookcase where I would get just enough to receive texts, and the Nexus works just the same way. With the Network Extender, of course it's all fine.)

You know, I've been seeing similar reading out of my nexus.
Example, at locations where I'm a few feet away from DAS or panels, I used to see as low as -25dBm and always better than -51dBm on my Thunderbolt or Rezound.
Now on Nexus it looks like it doesn't display anything better than -75dBm which leads me to believe that a signal that equals -75dBm or is better than that, will always be displayed as -75dBm.
Now I'm testing that in LTE environments so can't speak of EvDO or 1x.

Can anyone else do some field testing?

This is pretty common with Samsung, the GN with 4 bars (EVDO) will not go below -75dbm. I have seen that 3 bars is 83, 2bars is 93. There doesnt appear to be any other readings. On my Epic 4g Touch, the lowest it will go is -65dbm, then to -75, -91,-96,-102 as Sprint measures signal with 7 bars versus the 4 bars. So to summarize, if you are getting -75 on GN then that is max signal. If you don't like get a non samsung phone :)

I just like to know exactly what my signal level is so I can have a reference point like on any other smart phone.
Samsung Infuse 4G had the best Service Mode as I could literarily get in there and read every single thing that's coming from my baseband, in real time. So not ALL Samsung phones are like Nexus.

I haave also seen the same. I have bever seen anything higher than -75 dBm. Yesterday i was in the best signal area i have been in ever since buying the phone and i was showing -75 dBm on both 3G and LTE. My downloads were wicked fast--2Mbps/2Mbps on 3G and 25Mbps/15Mps on LTE. My husbands Thunderbolt was reading anywhere from -61 dBm to -73 dBm (3G of course) but but the Nexus was getting faster download speeds again.

All this paying attention to signal level has enlightened me to a few things. First, my home area is NOT as good a signal area as I thought. They way some other phones represent bars is really misleading and generous. I'm annoyed that Verizon is going to change the signal reporting methods when the Nexus (ICS) is actually doing it right and the others are not. It doesn't appear that the nexus has as many steps between signal levels as some other phones. I spend a lot of time looking at this because i'm paranoid and it jist seems that ths phone's granularity between levels is not as fine as, for example the Thunderbolt, leading me to think the signal is actually worse.

As it stands, i had the Rezound for 5 weeks and i maintain that phone is the exception in terms of signal strength, pefformance, and integrity. It simply performs in my experience, better than the rest when if comes to getting reception in weak signal areas. The nexus does appear to have a harder time in weaker areas, but only when comparing to the Rezound. Compared to any other phone it just appears to be average.

I just dont think the phone has a "problem." I think it's performing as designed, it's just not as good a performer as some other phones. Especially in weak signal areas.

The nexus definitely has some hysteresis, be it either in just the reprting or in actual performance. The phone may sit in the same place and fluctuatkon by 10 to 15 dB. When in a good signal area, it's not really noticeable by the bars because it will just waiver between 3 and 4 bars. But in weak signal areas it can waiver between 0 and 2 bars. Perception wise, this is alrming to most people. Im not sure what is going on with that, if the fluctuations are real because if so then that would be something i might say is busted.

For those that have trouble keeping signal period, it really does sound like that is a complaint to be taken to the store for an exchange rather than to the internet for a bashing session. Im not saying the phone is without issue im just saying to some extent it may be by design.

My Gnex only reads -120, -100, -93, -83 ,-75 and I have to be on top of a tower for -75 and my friends DX reads -56 and fluctuates by just a few dbm's at a time while mine bounces from -75 to -93.

Yup. I live about 1/4 mile from a tower and drop my son off at school which sits less than 100ft from the tower. My old Droid would get down to -45 dBm and sits at about -65 dBm at my house. My G-Nex will never go below -75 dBm no matter how close I get to it.

I hope they fix this in an update. I know it doesn't really matter as long as you have good signal, but I would still like to know my true signal strength.
