How to: Fix Battery Life

Well, my test is turning into a success in a hurry:

6 hours off the charger and I still have 62% battery remaining! :D

That's with what I would call "moderate" use: a little web surfing, checking weather, a phone call or two, and nearly constant streaming of music to my bluetooth headset since I woke up.

  • 3 home screens loaded with widgets
  • Wifi on
  • Juice Defender on Balanced

So I could conceivably go all day long without a charge!

I have experienced NO lapse of data connectivity... whether it's on wifi at home or 4G around town. If I want something, it's there with no waiting.

That's very nice testing result if you had 4G on all the time!

Sweet. Glad to know now all we require is a simple app - barely noticeable, and we can enjoy our 4G LTE Galaxy Nexus'. I'm seriously happy. I was thinking about returning my Gnex because 6 hours of LTE and it would be dead. Or 8 hours of no LTE. Now I can trust it to last over half a day. Thank god.

Believe it or not, 4G was on MOST of the time! In fact, I have wifi enabled but it hasn't connected to my 802.11n home network since I got back home. So yeah, it's a pretty surprising improvement :)

WOOOOOOT.

Just an update - No wi-fi, Juice Defender ULTIMATE w/ Aggressive setting, 3G, Moderate/Light use, no 4G LTE, no GPS/NFC/Blu-Tooth, 86% battery - 5 hours since unplugged.

Very good. Interestingly some folks seem to be getting nearly a day or more of moderate usage without using battery saver app at all. I think it depends a lot on location and apps used.

I will try 2X battery instead of Juice Defender and see how it does. I read that it doesn't disrupt data connection so much as Juice Defender did to some phones and reviews seem pretty positive.

Let me know how 2X goes.

Without wi-fi trick, no LTE
8 hours.

Without wi-fi trick, LTE
5-6 hours.

With wi-fi trick, no LTE
10 hours

With wi-fi trick, LTE
8 hours

With juice defender ULTIMATE (Set to Aggressive), no LTE, no wi-fi trick
18 hours

There you have it folks :)

well the big question is - are you CONNECTED to a WIFI network during these "with wi-fi" tests for your data use? or is WIFI simply on but not connected to an access point?

using connected WIFI is more battery friendly than using 3G/4G for data. but leaving WIFI on and running around NOT connected to a WIFI signal should give you the same or slightly worse battery life since you would then be using 3G/4G anyway and the device is periodically checking for avilable WIFI Access Points which will consume a little bit of power each time.

Hey y'all....be careful using Juice Defender if you've had any data connection issues. Many of us have seemed to notice a possible corrilation between the two--phone seems to take 2-5+ minutes to connect to both 3g and 4g data after the phone had "gone to sleep" with juice defender running.

Yep I had this problem. I used to use JD on previous phones with much success but it seems to permanently disable data on my GN until I completely restart the phone. There are open discussions of this issue on the juice defender website.

Okay folks, my last update on the thread:

It has been exactly 12 hours since I took my Nexus off the charger and I still have 34% battery left! Test complete, it's almost bedtime for the Nexus... this experiment is officially considered a raging success and I appreciate the info in this thread that helped me get the results I'm getting!

Never had this problem.

Both, and the second paragraph may be false - there may lie a bug that leaving wi-fi on increases battery life.

Awesome. It has been great for me as well. With heavy use, 24%, 10 hours since unplugged. That is heavy use!

Did you just download free version, launch and just set balance, then that is it?

With 4G/WiFi on?

I installed Juice Defender free and I don't like it. If it is constantly turning off my data every time the screen goes to sleep (which it does quickly after non-use), then I can't receive notifications, kik messages, use google talk. So then what's the point? I can see if you don't need data until you go into facebook or other apps, but some need to be kept on in the background and with juice defender that can't happen. Granted, I am not a pro at any of this stuff. And maybe if I upgraded I can customize more. But with having it for an hour, it is frustrating that it keeps shutting off data.

I am still learning the settings as well but I like that it turns off wifi/data when the phone is off. I have it set to check every 5minutes though.

You can also set schedules - like peak hours and night/sleep hours. Ideally, you could have it check every 5minutes during day (while at work), stay on constantly in the evening (during heavy use hours), and only check every 30minutes at night (when I'm sleeping). This is obviously far better for battery life than if it stays on all the time.

It also pops on when I turn the screen on. The problem I am having is that it will go into 4G for a few seconds while it recognizes my wifi. Not sure this is a bad thing but it probably uses more juice (turn on 4g data, search wifi, connect, turn off data). Again, maybe it's because it takes a few seconds to get into wifi and this prevents "no connection" errors if I'm quick to open an app that requires it.

I have been getting about 24hours battery life with the screen at 50% bright and ON for 2.5hrs. When it's on, I am browsing, streaming and gaming.

Yeah, that's the whole point: shut off data for most of the time. I tried it and I didn't like it either. I want my Gtalk and Touchdown (Exchange email) messages to come in as they push, not in 5, or worse, 15 minute intervals. I don't have the screen on long enough in a day to make battery life unbearable, so I stopped trying to fiddle with JD+. If I didn't care about push, I might give it a shot again...

You can set it, at least for me, to allow certain apps to use data in the background. I have slacker radio, spotify, etc.

I'm liking it so far for me.

Also after removing facebook, google+, using browser only for SNS, battery life seems much better.
I disabled Facebook and my battery life still sucked today. I am deleting Facebook and Gtalk but Google+ is a built-in yes? I attempted to disable all the stuff in Google+ and I will see how things are tomorrow. Then I will start to re-enable some Google+ stuff and see what that does. What is the difference between Google+ and the GTalk app? Do they compete for resources?

I've done nothing special with my phone at all. My battery just started kicking ass yesterday. I've played some games, texted a lot, watched a few videos, and streamed music today. Here's my outcome:

What I've learned is..... just let the phone figure out the battery. I haven't even used my extended battery yet because of how good the juice is on this standard battery. I'm not even sure if I want to use it because of how good it is! Hahaha. :D

I know what you will say, "I was on wi-fi all day!" Nope. I was at work for 7 hours, and I got home and wham. That's what happened.
