Step son dropped his samsung galaxy s in the sink a few days ago. I placed it in bag of rice to try and draw out the remaining moisture. It has been there now for about three days. Phone will start up, the problem is that the two soft buttons either side of the home button are not working. When you touch them they light up so it obviously aware it is being touched, it just doesnt do the function it is meant to, e.g. go back. When i tried it after two days the home button did not work but it does now, is there any chance of the soft buttons working again or do you reckon after this time they are well goosed. Thanks for any help offered.

They may have rusted a bit. Try applying more pressure and see if anything happens?
Under these softkeys is a sort of exposed receiving end of that orange plastic circuit sheet stuff that all electronics have.

Alternatively you could try undoing the 7 screws on the back of the phone and prying the back off (be careful, go slow, and start from the top, and don't lose the power and volume buttons as they will be released as the back comes off), then blowing air through the gaps at the bottom to try to dry out the front.

edit- here is a picture of the back with the cover removed, as you can see on the right, there are gaps between the green circuit board and the black plastic, directing air through there may help:

Do the 'soft' buttons on either side of the 'Home' key actually have anything other than a purely software actuation - surely there are no mechanical parts associated with them??

As for 'rust' ? If there were mechanical parts, these would be gold flashed surely on brass/copper rather than iron/steel.

They will work eventually if the phone is truly dried out (WITH BATTERY REMOVED). Can take several days - do not force with excessive heat!!
