Help (VZW) Other person can't hear me.

I just had the problem again... with my 3rd sim card on my 2nd handset.

I don't know for sure what pattern my 1st sim was, but the 2nd sim was the non-oval center and the 3rd sim was the oval center. When I activated the 3rd sim I asked the customer service rep if she heard of this issue and she said she had not.

So I can confirm the problem has happened with both types of sim cards. I'm totally at a loss here at this point and tempted to return the phone, but I would be willing to keep it if I knew it was an issue that was being worked on.

I got my Nexus delivered last Wednesday (ordered on the phone because they honored a $100 discount that they wouldn't honor in the store). I activated it, made one successful call on Thursday, one on Friday. Starting Saturday, on every call the other side can't hear me. Granted, that has only been 4 calls total in those last three days, but it is happening every call.

For me, the problem doesn't wait 5 or 20 or 30 minutes to appear, it is there right from the beginning of the call. I am going to try a call tomorrow on a bluetooth headset and see if that makes any difference.

I will be a little upset if I have to get a new phone, because I always put a full body skin on my phone right away to avoid scratches. I put one of those on my phone Friday night after my last successful call, before this problem started on my phone.

After typing this comment, I read it over. I realized that maybe the problem starting right after installing the full body skin was not a case of unfortunate timing for me, but rather it could be the cause of the problem. I checked, and it looks like the skin covered the microphone! There is a little circular cut-out in the skin that I missed. I just poked that out with a knife, and I will make a test call in the morning, but I assume that was the problem. I will report back to confirm. Good luck to all of you experiencing an actual problem, rather than "user error."

2 calls this morning worked fine, now that I don't have a skin covering the microphone. I feel like a total idiot, but at least I figured it out before I took the phone to a Verizon store!

I liked the post with the two SIM card styles side by side so much that I made a point to power off my phone just to check my SIM card and see the oval pattern. Hmm. I have no idea what my original SIM looked like, but my new one (which has not lost sound for me yet) looks like the SIM on the left (non-oval).

The other "hypothesis" I had was whether those having problems were using an LTE for the first time on an existing plan, coming from a 3G phone? I recall the VZW rep having some problems getting my phone set up on release day saying something about towers not recognizing an LTE device on a previously "3G-only" existing line. I even had to call support later that same day to have them "re-activate" my phone since it would not dial out (I would immediately get a recording when trying to place a call).

When I went back for the new SIM, VZW essentially issued a "new LTE connection" on my "existing LTE line" and everything has been good since then. Can anyone having these mic issues confirm that their Nexus is a 2nd LTE device on a pre-existing, unlimited data line? If so, this hypothesis can be dismissed. ;)

Well, I take it back, oval sim card didn't fix it after all... just muted out on 3 consecutive calls.

New theory - it seems to happen much more when my battery is somewhere below the halfway mark, mostly even in the bottom 30% of charge since I started paying attention. replaced battery with a freshly charged one after the 3 muting fails and talked for another 10 mins with no problems. Anybody else have stories to support or poke holes in that hypothesis?

Either way, this is getting kind of old. Got to decide if my phone is going to work as a phone at some point or get turned back in before the 15th...

oh, and esmith, I'm coming from a 3g unlimited plan too. No activation trouble for me, but I'd be interested to see if that theory pans out.

I don't have a case on mine at all and I haven't been covering up the mic, I wish I could fix mine that easily...

I'm happy my problem was user error, since that means it was in my control to fix it. Honestly, I haven't made any phone calls that lasted more than 2 or 3 minutes, so it is possible I will start having the same problems you are all having, but I hope not.

Good luck to you all!

Software issue is really possible, I just want to know that there is awareness of the issue and a fix is a priority. I can live with the issue for awhile if they would state it was an issue and provided the customers with the knowledge that there is a fix coming. An aprox date of the fix would be also very nice.

This phone is great except for that one issue.

On a side note, I've finally gotten the phone to do home screen redraws by loading too much junk on it. Anyone else?

Talked to Verizon support tonight. This is 100% a software issue, not a mic issue or a SIM card issue. Verizon and Google are aware of it and are working on a fix. It will most likely be included in the 4.0.3 update (my assumption).
Two reasons why I am hesitant to agree:
1) If it were software, why does it seem like such a small percentage of users are affected?
2) VZW reps with reliable information?

It is most likely some weird interaction between the software and the SIM card, the tower, etc. etc. which is why some people see it and others don't. My wife and I have had multiple hour long conversations with no issues, then we'll make another call and the issue will happen within the first few minutes. If you've ever written software for a living you realize how bugs work. The bug is always there, but it takes a special condition or combination of conditions to make it actually show up.

As far as Verizon admitting there is a problem, that will never happen. Better to keep their mouths shut and release a fix than to open their mouths and make everyone aware of it (even those that don't know it exists) and downgrade the reputation of the phone.

I do believe the VZW rep I was talking to. He was a nerd like us who's rooted his phone, knew all about the Nexus (including the upcoming 4.0.3 update), and probably lurks on this forum. He said they've had some complaints about this issue, Verizon and Google are aware and are working on it.

I reported that a SIM card fixed the problem for me earlier. But then I had two back to back calls just now where it happened both times. One call was 6 minutes and the other was 10 minutes. I promised myself I would return it for a Rezound if it happened again, but now I'm flustered as I love everything about this phone except for this one (major) issue. Aagh! What do I do now?!

Battery sort of low? just polling.

With the holiday return deadline looming, I'm kind of thinking I return the phone, go back to my OG droid, and wait for some sort of resolution or get a ....razr maxx? Like Benjamin Crist, I'd be a lot more comfortable if somebody from google or vzw would officially say "we know it's a problem, we're going to fix it," and I'd just ride it out. But I'm kind of nervous that I just signed up for 2 years with a phone that I can't reliably talk on.

Nope. I considered that, but I was at around 50% on the extended battery. FWIW, I was on wifi for data with "3-bar coverage" (voice LTE?) and talking to someone on Sprint.

Agree 100%. If you look around the web, there are other threads which suggest that Samsung, Verizon and Google HAVE acknowledged the problem, but there seems to be confusion over whether this is a software or hardware issue.

I can't decide what to do as I do not want another Motorola device (I won't take another phone that isn't unlocked), I know I won't be happy with an otherwise great Rezound after having had the Nexus/ICS for a month, and I can't go back to my old phone which has been passed along to a family member. At the moment, I'm leaning towards keeping the Nexus and hoping that either a software fix will come (soon) or -- if it's determined to be hardware -- a replacement will be made available within the 1-year warranty. FML.

It's not a SIM card issue. It is a software issue.
