Hi,

I just bought this 2 days ago but Im quite disturbed at the fact that my phone is draining too fast so far I cant go on a day without charging it...

Is it usually like this? cause I have had an experience with iphones too but for some reason my samsung drains faster than them..

Is there any way to fix this?

What firmware are you on 2.3.4? Also lower the brightness in setting as it does not need to be as high as it is set.

I don't get long out of the phone either. Its the nature of the beast.

In a standard day's use with web browsing - video - apps etc I get about 8 -9 hours max- this is with most of the time in standby times too. Sometimes less if its a draining app.

I was in a phone shop this weekend and two people came in with complaints about the Galaxy S2 - both were about the battery life. !! The assistant admitted it was a great phone but battery is a problem + the HTC.

Before anyone says "well turn off apps" "tun off sync" "clear ram" "turn your screen down" "don't run cpu heavy apps" "calibrate your battery" "update your OS"etc etc etc ..... YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO BE DOING THAT !!! A phone should get a good full day of use without battery drain.... dare I say it the iphone does quite well.

I have been looking at other batteries out there with a longer discharge but which one????

Battery calibration is useless on a GS2 due to its fuel gauge chip characteristics.
The best way to see whats wrong with your battery is to see if any applications are using too much processing time at times where you expect them not to. Such processes are termed "wakelocks".
Look at your battery stats screen at the "screen on" and "awake" bars. If there are lots of blue lines at times where your screen is off, then this is a wakelock. Some are perfectly viable (eg, when scanning for new emails, weather etc) but some may be there unexpectedly.

To see what apps are using the processor (hence battery), download betterbatterystats.
This will give you a breakdown of what applications may be causing the problems.

with autosync, 3G always on when outside, 2 hours of endomondo running with gps on, music for 2 hours, emailing, calls and a 2 hour movie running, taptalk, and some internet search i ended up the day with 20% so i'm fully pleased with the battery life. you just have to chose the right rom and kernel for your phone.

now im going to charge it to 100% to have it ready for tomorrow, and by the way i dont turn it off at night because the drains is minimal ... less than 0,5 per hour i would say 0,3 or 0,4 because 1% drains in 1hour and an half (i have everything configured to be off at night, just the calls are working)

WTF ?? You just proved my point.... "chose the right Rom and kernel"

In sorry but a phone should be right from the off. I don't want to mess around withs unofficial software etc.

I don't believe those who get over a day out of the phone playing games, web and video.

if you are rooted you can undervolt the battery and tweak how n when the cpu should perform ... you can also install better battery stats to see which wakelocks and precesses etc drain your battery , taking it off dymanic and putting it on standard or movie help quite alot too ... loads of widgets running could be a problem . i get about 23-30ish hours moderate sometimes heavy use nearly 4 hrs screen on just by using some of those things

I think the battery for the phone works fine. Its meant to be charged everyday so the best is if can last through the day, that's good. It can last 3 days without 3G on.... etc (like a normal phone).

I believe its comparable to any smartphone out there including IPhone in view of the screen, and specs.

But if the battery is draining faster than what you think it should, the following can help...
1) Check the battery and see if any rogue apps are draining the battery. Things like voice command sometimes don't shut off properly and keeps draining battery.
2) Look for wakelogs... the things that keeps the phone from sleeping. Things like widgets that keeps going online to search for updates... etc can be the culprits
3) Update to 2.3.4 or above. I noticed battery discharges less during sleep. And voice command seems to shut down properly.
4) Keep 3G off when not using it. For example, during sleep, and with 3G off, battery drain is 2% after 8 hours or even less (using 2.3.6) and with 3G on, is easily double that. If you have 3G on, the phone usually have more wakelogs as well.

Cheers

I cant seem to find the better battery stats app...

Same problem with my GS2. I moved from an iPhone 4 where the battery life there was better and the iOs device charged far far more quickly.

My device takes 6 hours to charge from 20% to 100%, and will discharge from 100% to 20% in under 2 hrs while being used for web browsing and emails. I've minimized any tasks being used in the background but the problem remains. This is all too frustrating and unacceptable.

Something most be wrong with your phone, mine never took so much time to charge and it doesn't drains so fast. I finished watching planet of the apes guess its a 2 hours film and been on internet since then 30 minutes I guess and drained from 93 to 67

Sounds like faulty battery

Hi. I have a issue with the battery since upgrading to 2.3.6.

Last night the phone was around 80-90%. I woke up this morning to a low battery alarm. Android OS use was high and the phone had been awake a lot.

I have switched off sync thinking that could be the culprit (although it was always on with 2.3.4).
I have also changed wireless settings to switch off when the screen goes off.

Both however are not Ideal for updates and emails etc

I upgraded Monday but didn't notice this before, no new apps etc have been installed- although I think most nights the phone was on charge.

Will post some detailed screenshot once the phone has charged. Is this a issue with 2.3.6?

One of the Android OS processes had been preventing your phone from sleeping. It may have been a one-off occurrence (it happens) but if it repeats then Better Battery Stats will reveal the culprit.

Thanks. Its off charge now so I have checked the settings (wireless to switch off on screen off).

I will see what happens for the next hour or so in standby and check if its still waking up.

If so will try that app.

Have seen the same issue on AT&T forum with 2.3.6 - looks like a bug! If its going to do this will it be safe to revert to my old firmware?

What a lot of you guys need to remember is battery life can be affected by many different things and rarely is the firmware, especially if you are on 2.3.4 or higher. I have had my battery drain 10% per half hour and found it was a service that gets installed when you install certain apps. Not all App developers care about battery life. If you have installed Samsung Apps, it installs a service called Samsung Push that chews up battery very fast. You can freeze it if you are routed or uninstall it if you aren't. You really don't need it to run any of the apps. I also installed a program to sync iTunes music, the only problem was it made the media service go crazy and was burning battery 20% every 45 minutes.

Check the apps you have on your phone before changing back to old firmware because I doubt it is the firmware and probably just some poorly developed application.

The OS is eating up more battery than ever before in 2.3.4 ?

Lots of wakelogs. Get betterbatterystats from market to see if can identify the process that cause the wakelogs. I noticed if you don't have wifi and 3G on, there are a lot less wakelogs, indicating certain apps are using data/wifi for updates, sync etc.

That said, draining 1% per hour is not that bad since you are using it. Screen takes up most of the power which seems right.

Good luck
