How durable are these phones?

I bought the Incredible S yesterday, and whilst I was doing my coursework (I left it late) I was a but hasty in my movements and knocked it off the arm of the chair, it fell and hit me external keyboard, and then on to the carpet. I checked it and see no damage and everything works, so am guessing the keyboard cushioned the blow a bit, as did the carpet.

How durable are these phones? Would a knock like I've described damage it?

I think you're ok. I did the same thing three weeks after I got my phone. Mine landed on a very very thin carpet. I've had it for a few months since then and no problems at all.

The glass is probably the most fragile part of the device. If you didn't crack it and have no dings on the frame, your phone is probably fine.

The glass is Gorilla glass. I would think that would be the last thing to break.

Gorilla glass is strongest in the middle. If you drop it on a corner and a piece of metal inside the device bends just enough to break the glass it will shatter all the way up.

As far as Dinc2 having gorilla glass,i don't know if that's the case, it lists incredible s as having it... I don't know if they are considered the same exact phone...

I was walking in to work last week, trying to put my badge lanyard over my head/jacket collar with one hand while looking for the meeting room on my phone with the other, and the phone got knocked backward and went clattering ~5 feet down onto the rough concrete sidewalk...screen down, and I think it slid a little bit. Crap, I thought. No case or screen protector; the back cover went flying off.

Apparently the lip that was discussed here was enough to keep the screen from being made useless, and the phone survived. There are 2 tiny scratches in the screen (only noticable when it's off), and a nice ding in the upper left corner of the shell (exposing the metal). The good kind of scars -- makes it identifiable without affecting usage. I was suitably impressed (and very lucky, I assume, along with much more careful now).

I left mine in a case on a counter at the Doctors office. I went and sat in a chair to wait for my appointment. A lady grabbed my phone then turned around to give me my phone and it flew out of it's case and hit the front door and landed on the tiled floor and the back and battery flew out. I put it back together and it's worked fine since. WHEW!

My 18 month old daughter grabbed my phone about a month ago and when I asked her, very nicely to give it back, she threw it down as hard as she could on our hardwood floor and then ran away screaming with laughter. The battery door flew off and the battery came out, but I put it back together and everything has been fine - not even a scratch from it's horrible accident. :D

The micro usb power connector is very delicate. I just got my I2, used to have a first gen HTC android with a beefier regular USB connector. Imagine my surprise when I disconnected my phone from the power/data cord and the connector came out of the phone!!! I took it back no issues and am hoping it doesn't happen again.

If I were you I'd be checking battery, cover, anything that could come loose.

I should be checking my battery cover, or one of the other poster's?

Yeah, I know the USB housing moves a bit, the first phone I took back because I wasn't completely happy with the build had that issue, and it's replacement - my current phone - has the same slightly loose port housing.

From what you've all described, my drop was nowhere near as bad as any of yours. Mine at least fell on to a keyboard that cushioned the impact and then bounced on to the carpet. No scratches or cracks or anything. That's the last time I leave my phone on the edge of a chair, anyway.

@laurel25 I got really concerned then, cuz I read "18 month old daughter", as "18 year old daughter"... and thought to myself "WHAT KIND OF A ADOLESCENT THROWS HER PARENTS PHONE ON THE FLOOR AND LAUGHS."

LOL! That's hilarious! :D If she does it again I might take her musical Elmo and throw him on the floor as hard as I can - hopefully he'll break and I'll never have to hear Elmo sing the Chicken Dance song again!!!

I was driving the work truck (big box truck) and set the phone on my lap between stops. I forgot it was there and jumped out at the next stop and my less than a week old phone went straight to the pavement. I was amazed to see only a minor scuff on one corner of the housing, screen was still flawless and you would never see the mark unless I pointed it out to you. No case or protection of any kind. Just phone versus pavement from about 4 -5 feet. Maybe I am just lucky.
