Help Samsung Infuse 4G & Ice Cream Sandwich

I was just wondering if anybody has news on whether the Samsung Infuse is getting the Android 4.0 update at some point?

I've been reading about the delays getting Gingerbread for the AT&T Infuse, but I bought mine from Rogers in Canada, with Gingerbread already installed. I was also wondering if this meant Rogers customers would get the Ice Cream Sandwich update first (if at all) or if the update is dependent solely on the manufacturer (ie. Samsung, etc)?

THEN, it's up to the carriers to determine whether they will follow through. That's basically what happened with the Canada/US fragmentation for this phone. Samsung already released Gingerbread capable with this phone (albeit with some issues here and there), but AT&T for some reason did not get to add their customizations to it in time for the American release and thus just shipped it with Froyo.

If Samsung says there won't be ICS for the phone, then there's no chance after that, no matter what AT&T/Rogers say. You'll most likely have to use custom ROMs developed by private developers from XDA (they already have ICS themed ROMs if you'd like).

My personal gut feeling is that ICS will never come officially for this phone. Even for the GB update, it took this much time/energy for them to get their wits together to release it - and the changes from Froyo to Gingerbread are supposedly incremental compared to the much larger changes from Gingerbread to ICS.

I would love for me to be wrong though - it would be amazing to see ICS as an official update for this phone.

Fragmentation is just a part of androids way of life. Still love android but it is what it is. Sort of like apple not putting siri on previous Gen iPhones when it can run no problem. Carriers and manufacturers like to hold back upgrades to both software and hardware to force people to spend more money.

Due to the hardware differences, for each OS update, a team of developers have to tweak and build the stock ROM so that it runs without issues. For a company like Samsung, that translates into a lot of time and money since there are so many phones.

That's why I always recommend people who are concerned about updates to go with flagship devices. Flagship devices are prioritized first when resources are spent on development. The Galaxy SII is already confirmed for Ice Cream Sandwich. Phones like the Infuse are niche phones and the number of people that own them is not as big as the number of people owning a flagship device like the SII or the Nexus, so updates and development get pushed down on their priorities list.
