Car mounts

Hi all - I know this topic has come up in one or two other threads, but with yet another delay on the official Galaxy Nexus car mount (expansys are now saying mid-feb) I've run out of patience and thought it would be good to get everyone's ideas down in one place.

Does anyone have any recommendations for 3rd party mounts? I'd prefer it to be vent mounted although this isn't a deal breaker. It has to leave the headphone socket clear though. That IS a deal breaker.

So far I like the look of the clingo. Although worry that the curved back and dimpled battery cover wouldn't stick well.

Has anyone managed to find an alternative?

I've used this for two years with my N1. I'm pretty sure you can adjust the FORM version to hold the GN. They sell a 4" extension, so you can make it whatever length you'd like.

Arkon has a few options. I use the mega grip and it works for me (easy in and easy out is important to me). I tried their slim grip but it was too tight.

Do you have the standard window mount or the gooseneck window mount? I'm interested in shooting some time lapse videos on long trips and wondering about the angles at which it holds the phone. With the standard mount can you position it so it gets a straight on shot at the road without catching any of the mount's arm in the viewing area? Any info on which one you're using and the ability to shoot good video would be helpful. TIA

I actually have both but am using the gooseneck. I don't mount mine on the windshield but considering what you are looking to do either may work. My "standard" mount pivots up and down at the base and at the end, where the holder attaches, swivels around a ball joint. I'm certain you can get an unobstructed shot with with this standard mount if you have your GNEX mounted in a vertical position. You may be able to avoid having the mount in the camera view in the horizontal position but it might be close. The gooseneck may be a safer bet but the standard arm is a bit more solid.

Edit to my note above. Just looked at my standard mount some more, if you get the same one I have (see picture/ignore vent mount), it looks like you should be able to manipulate it so that you can an unobstructed view in either the vertical or horizontal mounting position.

Thanks for the help! I think I'll get the standard mount to start with; If its a no go for camera work, I'd still have a good mount. Then I'd start taking a look for a mount that WOULD work for the video purposes

Had the SM515 for my Incredible. Liked it because it was a simple, unobtrusive mount.

The SGN fits in it, but it is stretching it to it's limits. The little legs are angled(pushed) and as tight as it makes the spring open up it feels like it could come shooting out of the mounts. To fix it, I basically hacked a holder from a mount @ monoprice.com, that was like $3 onto the Arkon base and it works great.

I've heard a lot of good things about the Tetrax Xway. I am going to order one soon myself so I have no personal input but like I said...I've heard a lot of good things. You should check it out.

I found this video from a forum member reviewing the Xway - it looks like it might be the answer. The only downside is I'll probably have to buy a case as I don't like the idea of attaching the connector to the back of my phone.

Be careful with this mount. I had it for our iPods and they work great. The only issue is that the "feet" on the bottom that keep the item from sliding down can slide out the side and get lost. My wife has lost both of hers and I need to find replacements.

I love my Xway.

I glued the metal disc right to the back of the phone since replacement backs are easily available (I would not, for instance, do this to a RAZR).

If you don't use a case, the only problem is that the back of the Nexus is polycarbonate, which doesn't play nice with regular epoxy. I ended up using Loctite Epoxy Plastic Bonder to glue it more securely. I haven't had a lot of time with the new glue yet, so we'll see how it works. I used regular epoxy for my Droid X and it was awesome.

But the Tetrax mounts are great. The other nice thing is you can mount anything to them - it doesn't have to be a phone, or even a GPS. Anything that you can glue a metal disc to can get mounted.

Interesting. Good to note. I've had 3 of their holders and while the feet do move to adjust, I've never had one slide out. In fact, I find it a bit difficult to remove them.

Hopefully Arkon can send you replacement feet.
