Help Exchange E-Mail Eating Up Battery

Wish I could figure this out. Nothing changed for my calendar appointments (there are plenty of recurring apts with no end dates). These were present when it was working correctly so I'm not convinced this is the cause for me.

I force stopped mine then restarted the phone and now its working just fine. In fact, I am at 16 hrs and 76% battery left (extended battery) and exchange is pushing my emails and calendar is synced. I am not sure what the exchange problem is but at some point it must randomly loop itself and just need a reboot.

Well, It is definitely something with syncing with calendar. I turned off the sync for just calendar and checked battery stats 10 minutes later and now the phone is sleeping again like normal. So until this gets fixed I figured I'll just keep calendar sync off and then once a day will manually sync.

thanks for the tip. I will have to shut mine off as well if I run into the bug again. I can survive the next 3 weeks without my calendar but as soon as my semester starts back up that calendar on my phone becomes my life!

I have exchange on mine and have no issues. It works just like it has on all of my other android devices. Exchange services are always 2 or 3 percent of my battery usage.

I couldn't get the native exchange to work, and had to switch to touchdown. Even that took some tweaking to get it loaded.

Turning off Sync seemed to fix the data gobbling. This is a weeks worth of data.

Be interesting if this Calendar detail is an issue.

For me, just getting connected proved impossible through the built in email client.

If you're using Office365 that may be the problem. I had the same issue, brutal battery life, long keep awake times and lack of syncing. I can't find the links to the threads right now (and can't post them anyway, being a new user), but you may end up having to change your server settings from podxxxxx.outlook.com to ch1prdxxxx.outlook.com or something similar.

Interesting thread - up until today, my Exchange battery usage stat has been very, very low. Today, it is sky high! I've gotten more mail today than usual but not that much more to account for the usage. I have mine set to push updates but it's been set that way since I got the phone before Christmas. My battery died rapidly yesterday too but I did not notice if it was Exchange but likely it was.

I've rapidly gone from a happy Nexus user with battery life of a full day or sometime even a little more to a very unhappy one who got less than 12 hours of life yesterday.

Just tried killing the app and restarting the phone as a battery pull made no difference.

Some have suggested that it's caused by recurring calendar entries that have no end date. Perhaps you just added one....???

Hi John -

I didn't add any recurring entries without dates but I did have an item disappear off my calendar out of Outlook yesterday about the time this all started. I was working on my desktop, not the phone at the time. I had suggested a new time, the other person accepted and I got an invite back in my mailbox for the original time. When I accepted again, the calendar entry disappeared in Outlook completely. I had just taken the phone off the charger when this started and it was then that I noticed the rapid battery drain. My "awake" time was really high all afternoon and was the same today after charging as well and today Exchange was up at the top of the list for usage when usually it is at the bottom.

It hasn't been long enough since I killed it and rebooted to see if this is the issue but I am hoping so! I've searched for the missing meeting in Outlook and it is nowhere to be found so I can't delete it if I wanted to. Fingers crossed the kill/reboot worked!

Force stop and restart helped a little but my battery still dropped like a rock.

I have lots of appointments with no end dates and although I did receive a few new ones the day the problems started, I've had others that were there the first day I sync'd my phone. I get as many invites as I make myself so saying "you can't have an appointment without an end date" does not cut it for me.

Anyone else have any suggestions as to how to get this squared away? I love my Nexus and was really pleased with the battery life until 2 days ago so I hope this is something that can get resolved!

Switched to touchdown and things are back to normal. Although Touchdown is pretty impressive in its feature list I just like the way stock looks better. As soon as any fix is available I will switch back, but Calendar and Mail Sync are the 1st priority for any smartphone to be useful to me.

I've done some playing around and found that if I have WiFi turned on, I am back to getting 24+ hrs out of my battery but without it, I am lucky to get 8 hrs as I noted before.

I know others have reported that WiFi has helped alot but the part that I don't get is I was in the 24 hr range without WiFi at one point too!

Turning off the calendar sync has made no difference at all - I still see Exchange doing "something" all night long.

If you are in a location with poor 3G / LTE signal it will constantly ping for signal. I leave my wifi on 24/7. I am either at work or home for the majority of the day. I get about 18 hrs on my standard battery.

Thanks gobluejd - my signal is generally pretty good on 3G, in fact, it runs more in the "green" on the battery meter than on the "gold". Before I started having the issue I got almost solid gold but now it is more "green" which Verizon tells me is a better signal. Nothing changed from one day to the next but yet everything changed in terms of battery life. It's really odd but I've seen several other forums where people have reported the same thing - good life with Exchange and then suddenly very poor.

Chiming in I found today that Exch calendar is killing my battery most days (but not all). Prior days I would find the battery graph mostly green and dead within 9 hours. Today with calendar sync off the graph is mostly gold and at 50% at 10 hours. I have WiFi active all day and WiFi signal all day. I have a very weak cellular signal most of the day. Without question Exch calendar sync was killing my battery. Interestingly it did not appear as a major offender in the battery process list. Android OS was just by far the largest consumer.

edit: I take it back, even just having email sync active is KILLING my battery no matter what the check interval. Something is up with Exchange in general, at least with the account I connect with.

i'm having this same issue. an interesting data point is that i have been using my phone for a month now and exchange services was never in top 5 or even top 10 in battery usage, and all of a sudden it jumped up in the past few days (so it's not an initial data dump). i haven't changed any sync settings at all (i've always synced mail, contacts, and calendar with no issue prior to a couple days ago, aside from the inherent abysmal battery life of the nexus). i've been burning through my standard and extended batteries...

the fact that i had been able to sync in the past without exchange services being in the top 10 makes me think that a) something is up with exchange and b) there is a solution... i need to sync calendar for work so disabling that is not an option for me (and it sounds like that's not necessarily the culprit anyway).

btw as i troubleshoot, does anyone know how to reset the battery usage chart / screen? power off / battery pull does not reset it.

I am having this same issue.

Although--I dont have calendar or contact syncing turned on...just emails.
Initially I thought it was because the refresh setting was set to "Push"--but setting it to 1 hour doesnt help either.

Just email syncing kills the battery too. In 4-5 hours tops...and it eats up 70% of the battery.

Although my calendar entries may not have end dates...im not syncing the calendar anyway...

So--I would say that this issue exists even without Calendar issues.

I am on the Nexus S ICS stock.

I'm another victim. Normal usage for months and all of a sudden without making any changes to my Hotmail account, it's on top of battery and data usage. Somethings up!

I posted over at XDA and someone suggested to initiate debugging logging on this account. I just did it and am looking at the log files now.

I've been a victim for some time but then last week, for 3 days, the problem went away. The phone had been off for about an hour while on a plane (not in airplane mode) and when I turned it back on, all was well with Exchange. Alas, it lasted only 3 days and then the problem was back. I noticed it after I restarted the phone but I think the problem had already started. I've also noticed that even when Exchange use is high, I do significantly better (24+ hrs instead of 8 hours) of battery life if on WiFi.

As the poster above said, Exchange work, sometimes. I'm hoping for another lucky day where usage drops back to 2-3% like it was last week.

I am planning to remove my account and try and redo the setup to see if that changes anything.

Many other posters have mentioned that the workaroudn for this situation is to either
1. Put end dates on appointments on the calendar entries.
2. Remove the calendar sync.

Neither of those have helped in my case.

After a month of usage, suddenly the battery started draining out in about 4 hours after charging even during the night/no activity.

So thanks to this thread I checked my Outlook calendar (which i sync to my Google calendar and then to my Galaxy Nexus) and found some 50 recurring calendar items with no end date like birthdays, regular tasks etc.
Then I just set those recurrence limitations to say 50 or 80 times, or set the end date. That solved the problem, and now the battery lasts for about 2 days which is normal for GN.

The question is why it became a problem so suddenly and not after first syncing to Outlook? And I hope this bug will be solved.

anyone find a solution?!

My phone was working fine and only started having this exchange issue the past couple days

I did this and it seemed to work for me. Although I did untick calender and contact sync, but I set my emails back to push and all is good again.
