Anyone else having significant browser stability problems?

Just FYI, I also had the Tethering Force Close problem, and the only advice I found anywhere was the factory reset. After much pain and still lingering restoring issues, I have not had the tethering issue reoccur since I did the factory reset.

I have the Tethering Force Close problem. I miss Froyo.

if I save an app like angry birds on the sd card, will i lose my saved progress when i do a reset, or is it like being backed up when installed on the sd card?

You will lose the app data which includes levels and stars etc. Also note that moving apps to the SD card moves them to the internal sd card which gets wiped when doing a factory reset, so they will be gone unless you move them elsewhere.

What's the verdict on upgrading a rooted phone? Should it be unrooted before the update?

I had Froyo with a rooted phone (captivate) all was great. Decided to go gingerbread and now wifi starts scanning networks and just turns off... i have tried everything, wiping it, router reset, turning setting on and off... nothing anywhere I go. Anyone else having wifi issues?

Also, I hate that they removed the quick data turn off ability. Why remove it, it was simple and effective... oh, that's why they removed it.

I don't know why people are griping. Updated last night and I am very pleased. GB is faster and cleaner. Was worried about losing root, but thanks to GEEVe's post, not an issue.

GPS works great now on my phone and the wife's. Very unexpected since it hasn't worked ever. Wifi tethering good also.

This, along with many posts about the tethering manager force close bug is why I'll stick with my rooted device on 2.2. I'll see the next level of android on my next phone

That method of rooting is way beyond most folks' ability

Tethering manager keeps force closing on me too. Other than that, GB is much quicker all around than 2.2. Much quicker boot up. Games run smoother, and load faster. Photos and videos load quicker in the gallery. And finally, phone boots up 3 times faster.
Battery life has improved from 8 hours life, to 12 hours life; with moderate use.

For some reason, upgrading to gingerbread removed the default car mode app. If I plug my phone into the oem dock, the wheel icon appears and then...nothing.

Anyone else seen this???

EDIT: FWIW, I found it on the Market. Why it wasn't included in my Kies upgrade I'm not sure.

It was my first try at Odin and it was much easier than I had thought. It isn't as easy as superoneclick. But, as of now none of the simple root methods worked for me. Can't live without my Wifi tether and GB is much better than froyo.

Tether manager force close bug - Seen it, had it, goes away when you do a factory reset. Method to Root also exists. So no reason to stay with 2.2 anymore.

Allow me to throw my two cents in. I got my Captivate on Tuesday (1/17) and updated to GB yesterday. So far, I have only had one problem - Wi-Fi connectivity seemed to break when I updated. After the update, the Wi-Fi connection spent an inordinate amount of time trying to get an IP address from my router. I switched to static IP and assigned an address and got connected, then later I unplugged my router and plugged it back in, and switched back to DHCP and got a connection. (Interestingly, it was the same address I had assigned through static IP.)

Other than that, I have had no major problems with GB yet. I like the new icons in the notification area - much cleaner than the ones in Froyo. None of my data disappeared, although some of my settings did. It seems snappy enough, but I am comparing it to both my old iPhone and a few days of using Froyo, so I perhaps don't have enough data to make a valid comparison.

I'm definitely an Android n00b, but I find a lot of things I like about it that are different from iOS, most significantly the ability to customize. I don't like the lack of ability to "multitask" (in iOS, you hold down the "home" button and all of your open apps appear at the bottom), but the "Recent Apps" window is somewhat helpful. I wish it showed more than just the last six apps, though. Once I figured out how to open new windows in the browser, that made the transition from iOS a little easier. And the ability to set up direct dial shortcuts on the home screen is a real plus - I don't have to hit "phone," then navigate to "favorites" to get my frequently dialed numbers (like my wife).

And Samsung has always put out quality products, so there wasn't very much trepidation about switching to the Captivate. Overall, I'm fairly pleased so far, and once I figure out how I want to configure my home screens to be more productive, I'm sure I'll like it even more.

I assume you are wondering why I like GB? froyo was a bit laggy for me. I like the wrap around scrolling of menu. also, when i used to use my phone with bluetooth connection to play music, it would pause every now and then. I don't get that anymore.

Hmm.. Not much there. Wrap around scrolling in menus is available in most launchers GB or not, and I haven't heard or experienced that Bt issue you refer to. Is that all you got from upgrading to GB?

I'm hoping to get around to upgrading this weekend. Should I unroot first, or does the update work okay on a rooted phone?

If you are going to upgrade from Froyo to Gingerbread, I suggest the following.

1) Make a list of all your apps, just in case you need to reinstall them.
2) When you connect your Cappy to your computer, copy the SDcard to your computer
3) Make sure your contacts are backup somewhere.
4) Remove your external microSD if you have one.
5) I also removed my SIM, just in case.

Do a factory reset THEN upgrade to Gingerbread.

Reload your data.

FYI, I upgraded from stock Froyo to stock Gingerbread and was getting the Tethering Mananger error. F****** annoying. Doing the factory reset cleared that up. When I did the factory reset, I already had Gingerbread and when the phone rebooted, I still had gingerbread.

Definitely faster. No discernible lag. Fast boot. Quickest quadrant scores I have ever had, definitely faster than Froyo.

The only annoying thing I noticed was when I ended a phone call, the phone icon does not go away right away and my phone "freezes" for a few seconds. I remember someone previously mentioning this issue.

With this tethering manager error, why do a factory reset...? Freezing it with Tibu should do the trick

There are also several steps to try in the support thread on the tethering force close error before you resort to a factory reset. Rooting may not be necessary to fix it either.
