2.3 GingerBread for Captivate[discussion]

If you are going to upgrade from Froyo to Gingerbread, I suggest the following.

1) Make a list of all your apps, just in case you need to reinstall them.
2) When you connect your Cappy to your computer, copy the SDcard to your computer
3) Make sure your contacts are backup somewhere.
4) Remove your external microSD if you have one.
5) I also removed my SIM, just in case.

Do a factory reset THEN upgrade to Gingerbread.

Reload your data.

FYI, I upgraded from stock Froyo to stock Gingerbread and was getting the Tethering Mananger error. F****** annoying. Doing the factory reset cleared that up. When I did the factory reset, I already had Gingerbread and when the phone rebooted, I still had gingerbread.

Definitely faster. No discernible lag. Fast boot. Quickest quadrant scores I have ever had, definitely faster than Froyo.

YMMV

What if im not an external sd.car and am only using the internal then.what?

If you only have the INTERNAL SDCARD then you are going to have to copy the folders with your pics, music, and data to your computer. Follow the steps listed above, they work. Then after all is said and done just paste folders back on your phone. I did this and not having this ridiculous error anymore. I find this ******ed to HAVE to do this but then again this is AT&T we are talking about. Hope that helps! Also if you have Gingerbread already on your phone the reset does NOT affect it. You will still have 2.3 after factory reset.
cheers

I upgraded without backing up a single thing and didn't lose anything at all on the internal or external drive. As far as the tethering error-rooting took all of 5 minutes and then freezing the tethering manager in TIBU took a minute and that cured that "bug". The rooting guide on this forum is excellent and super super easy to follow

I haven't visited the forum in a while and I am glad to see the GB released, finally.

I have read that a Factory Reset after the upgrade and rooting fixes a lot of the issues that GB creates. However, I would like to preserve most of my apps and their data. What suggestions do you have? Can I just selectively restore each app and its data? Do I need to freeze the app before I backup it up? I am getting some conflicting information.

So the process I see is:
Backup everything with Titanium
Perform the upgrade
Root
Factory Reset
Install Titanium
Restore apps as needed

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update after upgrade

My phone went nuts after the upgrade and root. It kept on rebooting or trying to reboot (Make the sound but no animation). Of course it FC on the tethering manager. It also FC on email, which is because I had a custom email program installed when I used to have an exchange account. After finally getting to the factory reset, all calmed down. I installed Titanium and restored a portion of my applications. It is very happy now, and much faster.

Just a note, the update resets any GPS settings you may have made. You can reinstall LBStestmode using SGS tools so you can check it out.

Since I finished this up at about 12:30am, I didn't get the sleep I wanted. I just had to get up to get the garbage out. Going back to sleep now. I am glad I took today off.

Okay, I originally had two minor issues after finally finishing the GB update, but now I only have one.

Just for info, the first was setting the user agent on the browser. I finally found the answer was to type about:useragent in the URL box. On Froyo I had a hacked browser to fix this and I am so glad I don't have to replace the browser.

The second one has to do with the camera.apk. I had a hacked camera.apk when I was on Froyo that both fixed the geotagging and the most important was to allow the use of the power button as the shutter. Well, I went to take pictures today and couldn't figure out why when I hit the power button it was freezing up. I then realized I had lost that functionality. Does anyone have a camera.apk that works with the stock GB that fixes this?

I updated to GB a couple days ago and so far, don't like it. I lost connectivity with my car which worked perfectly before. Bluetooth works and it says it's connected but after a call is place, either voice or manually dialing, it instantly ends. I tried reinstalling the phone book and it still does the dame thing. Not happy. That and I now need a microscope to see the icons in the tool bar.

Any advice on the car issue?

I updated today from 2.2 (unrooted) and I think the changes in the menu are great like the settings tab, drop down menu, and lock screen wallpaper. However 2.3 is horrible in the web browser. I keep seeing a checker board patter I never used to see. Everytime I touch the edge of a web I see that blue color, the plus/ minus zoom isn't there as much as it used to be and its pretty annoying. I loved that plus/ minus thing. in 2.3 some web pages really suck. For example if I land on yahoo and want to scroll doen to the bottom of the page... It lets me scroll but then the webpage "Snaps" back up to where I landed at the top of the page. Its super annoying especially when it snaps to the top like that 8 times a row.

Can someone instruct me on how to DOWNGRADE to 2.2.... I miss the web browser :'(

Now, I've read this thread, but I'm having some major issues here and a couple hours of browsing the Internets ain't helping.

I have a Captivate from about a year ago. Came with 2.1, and the update from 2.2 gave it an actually functional email client (not gmail) but lost all copy/paste ability from the default browser and email client.
The phone was rooted and TetheringManager was removed from the system.
I got the text from AT&T about the 2.3 update, and was excited. I performed the update with Kies.

After it flashed the firmware successfully and started, I was instantly greeted with "TetheringManager2" (tether harder) has forced closed. I figured it was because the first tethering manager wasn't installed at the time.
Now, I was messing with it and when I opened my email client, it claimed there were no newer emails since the end of December (even though it was all up to date before the flash), and since it was set to retain only a month, it removed all the old emails. Understandable. However, when it tried to update it would give me a "failed to connect to server". This is an exchange server and I know it's up. The info has not changed. I checked the settings to make sure and when it automatically tried to check the server settings, it would get stuck on "incoming", and eventually either force close processcom.android.email (70% of the time) or tell me it could not connect to server (30% of the time).

This is over 3G, and I'm in a reliable area. I've restarted the phone and checked the settings. Neither my POP3 or Exchange accounts work. Gmail and the browser work through 3G.
So, I figured I'll try to connect to WiFi. You can imagine my delight to see that it turns "on", scans for a connection, and then auto shuts off. No messages, no pop-ups. It just turns off.

In a last-ditch effort before trying to un**** my phone back to 2.2, I rooted it and backed up, and removed the TetheringManager2. It got rid of the force close messages for it, but didn't help with the WiFi or network connection issues.

Last but not least... the quick silent removal. First, they make it so you can't change between "vibrate" and "silent" quickly from 2.1 to 2.2, and now they make it so you have to go "BOOP BOOP Boop Boop boop" all the way down to silent. Wonderful.

I'll try any suggestions but this seems rather useless, so far.

hold the power button down to bring up the option for silent mode, as well as airplane mode and shutdown. I preferred the one in the drawer too, but this isn't any more difficult.

I have version 2.2 and have never rooted or anything like that. My phone basically works ok for what I use it for. The battery life isnt great but I have two extras. Is there any reason for me to update or would I be better off just leaving things as they are? Thanks for any input

if i had it to do over again. i would stay with 2.2 froyo. 2.3.5 GB is to glitchy right now. to many small things. from text messaging to the browser to getting email setup right. this upgrade isnt a upgrade. it is like a very first beta test.

i myself did the factory restore to get ride of the teathering error message. it worked for a little bit when i did the battery pull but once i pluged the phone into my PC it came back. so i did the factory restore.

I disagree, 2.3 is much better than 2.2 imo. Quicker, better battery, wifi connection issues on 2.2 are now fixed, and more...
